I just want to say this man is a saint. My mom went in for a shoulder surgery she was in so much pain and was so scared. Dr. McGahan worked his magic and she came out brand new! ( for an old lady ) . Her recovery should've been probably a few months but since Dr. McGahan was such a great surgeon she was pretty much healed up after 2-3 weeks and she doesn't even need her cast/arm sling anymore. 5 star I recommend this doctor for all surgery that he performs! He also treated my mother with utmost after care and shows a lot of respect to elders. I cant say that to a lot of doctors i met after they got their money already. This man is a amazing read more

I am 12 days post total right knee replacement and I couldn't be happier with the result, the communication and the overall professionalism of Dr. McGahan. On my pre-op I brought along a friend who is a physical therapist, and Dr. McG answered all her questions without feeling threatened in any way (that told me a lot) My pain is being managed now by only OTC meds, I am walking with just a walking stick, and PT is very happy with my range of motion. A very successful surgery. read more

I have been seeing Dr. McGahan for over 3 years due to having HORRIBLE arthritis in both my knees and the only solution was knee replacement! Dr McGahan has been nothing but Professional, Kind and explained all my questions I had. Finally I had my left knee replacement and YES it was a very hard recovery for me cause it's a s l o w process which I am not used to. But it's been two months and let me just say Dr McGahan gave me my life back. I couldn't walk anywhere since the pain was sooooo intense. But now I am able to live my life. I'm suppose to have the right knee done, but I'm going to try to hold off as long as I can cause the pain after knee replacement was ONE to think about! If you want a AWESOME, KNOWLEDGEABLE and GREAT STAFF visit Dr McGahan he really is the BEST orthopedic around! read more

I was going to be several minutes later for my appointment with McGahan so called his office ahead of time and was told that he would be able to see me if I showed up by 11am. I arrived at the receptionist desk at 10:58am and was then told that McGahan had left for a "meeting" and wouldn't be back for 2 hours. And then, the receptionist named Teresa tried to argue that I hadn't arrived by 11am. From this timeline, it's obvious McGahan never intended to see me for my appointment. What is really concerning is the lying on the part of the receptionist and the callous disregard for his duty as a healthcare practitioner on the part of the doctor. read more

Excellent doctor and provided me great surgical results. Appreciate the standard of care and professionalism.

I can't begin to tell you how happy I was meeting and Dr. McGahan solving my knee issues. I had pain for over 2 years. He told me I wasn't ready for surgery for at least a few years. I thought for sure I needed surgery. I felt like Wonder Woman after he treated my knees. Would highly recommend Dr. McGahan! He knows what he's doing! read more

Dr Mcgahan is the BEST!!! He performed both if my hip replacements and I could not be happier. There is no better orthopedic surgeon in SF, especially if you're active and need someone who understands that. He listened to me needs and questions and was essential in my goal to run again! read more

Let me preface this review saying that If I had gone into his office hoping to have surgery, I am sure that my experience would have been very different. I booked my appointment on ZocDoc. I received an email saying that I had requested to have it made 15 minutes earlier via the practice. this was not true. I went through as required at the time 15 minutes before and filed out the forms whilst I waited in the waiting room. The forms contained an agreement to arbitrate against medical malpractice waiving a jury trial which I found curios. I left this incomplete. I was finally seen an hour later. I was taken through to the exam room by one of Dr McGahan's minions who was to perform the preliminary work on the checkup. I provided him with the X-rays I had brought and he said not to worry he would look at them later. He spent the next twenty minutes explaining to me why surgery was the way to go for a fractured clavicle even though according to Johns Hopkins University there are only three instances where a fractured clavicle must be fixed surgically - 1) exposed bone through the skin, nerve damage and multiple breaks. He did not even bother to look at the X-ray prior to his insistence on surgery with the first item being clearly evident. Eventually Dr McGawan came through he repeated a bunch of the Information I had given his assistant and told me that I needed surgery because I was a young guy in great shape and that would be all deformed and would probably not recover properly if I did not have surgery. He also gave me a takeaway card in lieu of medical records and observations from the consult. This saved him having to take his own records and waste space and time on taking records. I once again said I was uncomfortable with surgery and that I would let him know. He did ask me to return for a checkup in two weeks but I felt this would be a repeat performance,. I elected for a second opinion and am thrilled I did so.. read more

This Dr rocks. He is very articulate, knows exactly what he is doing, and best of all, lets the patient decide. What I mean is, the last time I had an orthopedic issue, I had to see three different surgeons. Each one gave me a different diagnosis. One suggested spine surgery, another suggested physical therapy, and the third suggested doing nothing and letting it heal by itself. Fast forward three years to my visit to Dr. McGahan for a different orthopedic issue. The Dr gave me three options. That's a lot easier. I got to choose what's right for me. It was a very refreshing visit. I was treated with dignity. His support nurse was also fantastic. This doctor and his aides are not arrogant (which unfortunately is the norm in the doctor world). Thank you Dr McGahan, you made me feel good on the inside, you empowered me to make the right treatment and diagnostic choice, and you saved me two visits to other doctors for a second and third opinion. read more

I really liked Dr. McGahan, but half the time when you call it goes to an incompetent answering service that can't keep anything straight. His office staff is also extremely rude. Just the reception staff. His nurse is a delight! Sweetest woman ever. The problem is that you have to get past the gauntlet of surly incompetence to get to the wonderful doctor. Not my circus, not my monkeys. It's a shame, but I just called my insurance and switched doctors. I have to have a knee replacement which means I'll be dealing with this office a lot in the next year. It's just not worth it. Maybe if he was the only game in town, but there is a wealth of great Drs in San Francisco. read more

I might have torn my ACL for about 1 1/2 years without knowing it. I was referred to Dr. McGahan by my PC because he has a reputation of producing "good results." Had my ACL reconstructive surgery and meniscus repairs about 6 weeks ago. I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Patrick McGahan and his entire surgical team, including, Dr. Brandon Gardner, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, and support staff, including Maria Cabe and Emily Ly. From the first moment I stepped into his office till now, I have never had to wait for more than a few short minutes for assistance. Dr. Patrick McGahan and his staff always answered my medical inquiries within hours. I was especially touched that Dr. McGahan personally changed my bandage on my first follow-up visit. The first day after surgery I was very afraid to put weight on my operative leg. After being told I could, ever since the second day, I have had a feeling that Dr. Dr. McGahan and his team had restored my knee to normal. Now 6 weeks out, I still have some swelling and pain; however, I have about 130 degrees of bend now, compare to 135 degrees for a normal person. Granted, I still need to put in many months of PT to rebuild the strength in my operative leg, Dr. McGahan and his team have given me a chance to run daily again for years to come. I am very lucky! read more

If you're looking for a great doctor, Dr. McGahan is an excellent Orthopedist. I had a recent scare with my right knee after coming down too hard on it during a work-out. Had an incident on one of my days off last week where I felt a tendon on the back of my knee suddenly feel like it quickly snapped back into place causing severe pain and swelling of the knee cap. I wasn't able to comfortably walk the first day this happened. I was in a lot of pain and needed answers fast. I found Dr. McGahan through an internet search and he thankfully was able to see me the same day. I'm incredibly grateful for Dr. McGahan's wonderfully calming demeanor and cheerful yet professional presence. I decided to do a cortisone shot in my knee. For me personally, I understand results can vary, it took about 48 hours or so for the cortisone shot to alleviate the pain. Dr. McGahan was a master at maintaining a calming presence while administering the cortisone shot. Something that might otherwise be a painful process was painless and easy for me. I highly recommend Dr. McGahan if you're looking for a competent, kind and altogether lovely doctor to support you in whatever your orthopedic needs may be. read more

I'm honestly super happy with my experience! I'm always a bit skeptical about yelp review but I figure I'll give him a chance since I was in need of an orthopedic surgeon and compared to other offices, they were able to get me in relatively quick! The staffs are really friendly and his Ma that assisted me was amazing. She was super patient with me even though I was ranting half the time haha. Anyways, Dr McGahan came in and greeted me with a big smile and he made me feel reassured and positive. I suffer from pfs and shoulder pain and he was able to diagnose me and offer me treatment options. I was happy that he didnt push me to do surgery, but i also heard he is a fantastic surgeon! Hopefully i wont ever need it though...i am now attending PT per his recommendation for my pfs and did it do wonder! My problem is not fully heal but I can definitely notice a difference. He also gave me an injection on my shoulder and gave me a list of home exercises I can do so my shoulder is feeling amazing right now. Thanks for working your magic Dr! read more

I highly recommend Dr. Mcgahan he and his team did an excellent job on replacing my left knee. It has only been a month and I am already doing very well. He always took the time to answer my questions and quickly followed up when I needed refills on medications. I am already planning on replacing my other knee. read more

This review is about Therese. I feel so fortunate that she works for the doctor. She helped me today cut through all the phone challenges to schedule my shoulder MRI. Therese made me feel like family, not like a stranger and just another number. There are so many pressures during a pandemic with a busy office, but Therese handled my request with such grace and calmness. She got me scheduled. Without her I'd still be on hold for my MRI. read more

I'm really happy with Dr. McGahan. He has helped me identify issues with my shoulder and locate a small meniscus tear on my knee which had been causing me severe pain. Because it was small, he did not suggest surgery and recommended some physical therapy to heal it instead. This was a great outcome as I was bracing for the worse. In addition to that, I like the treatment at AO Sports, all the staff are nice. I'll be coming back to this orthopedics practice. read more

This review is long overdue! After some time last year, Patrick McGahan recommended I get an MRI and based on the images, I decided to get my meniscus fixed. Prior to my decision, Dr McGahan was patient in explaining to me that surgery was not an absolute necessary; there are alternative options as well. Given that I wanted to continue with my activities, I decided surgery was the best outcome to fix my tear. Post surgery, Dr McGahan checked on me through the app his practice provides. Since then, as surgery is never an easy ordeal, I have kept in touch with him. Even though I make an appointment just to ask, ".... this doesn't mean I need surgery again right?! (Usually when I overtrain)," he responds in his kind and personable manner, "No Aggie, just take it easy." read more

Dr. McGahan is a world-class surgeon and a gifted human - expertly balances perfection and compassion in his practice, and the results speak for themselves. Today I walked out of his office with zero limp and zero pain on nothing but an OTC painkiller, 7 days after waking up from ACL Reconstruction surgery - something I haven't been able to do in 7+ months despite intensive PT. Dr. McGahan removed the sutures himself today - hardly a task that requires 15+ years of med sub-specialization - just one example among many of his end-to-end commitment to his patients. In addition to elite surgical skill, a few things I super appreciated: - Takes extra time to listen, explain, build trust; encourages questions; personally responds to email within 24 hrs (max); gives out his mobile to all his patients; - Only performs surgeries at facilities that have invested in state-of-the-art surgical tech/equipment - Actively contributes to advances in his field; steeped in the literature - But is 100% transparent on COIs (none); not hawking med devices or procedures for personal gain: https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/search/physicians/by-name-and-location - Will answer you straight up what's a waste of money and what is not when your insurance gives you the runaround, and his staff then goes the extra mile to arm you with whatever documentation you need to take insurance to the mat (and win). - Top-notch staff and surgery coordinator Emily Ly made sure even my basic insurance covered prehab, surgery, brace, crutches, post-op in-home nursing + in-home PT, and outpatient rehab. Emily dealt with my insurance directly, relieving me of what would have been a significant admin burden so I can return to work, bill free. - Dr. Stewart Bryant and Dr. Moyukh Chakrabarti follow up daily with all post-op patients via GetWellLoop; they both respond to messages within hours. ------- I'm newish in SF so when my new GP referred me to "Dr. McGahan" I put out an APB to my personal network of Trusted People in Baltimore, DC, NY, NJ, CO, Tokyo, and Geneva...pleased to report Dr. McGahan and his approach(s) to ACL-R more than check out. (Overkill? Sure. We each have our own ways of managing anxiety, folks). So: If you're a trained athlete, and need orthopedic surgery, this is your surgeon. If you're anxious and medium-grade depressed about your injury + surgery amid a global pandemic, this is also your surgeon - he's relentlessly calm, positive, patient. If you identify as female.... Dr. McGahan is your surgeon -- because while he is a board-certified Blackbelt-Ortho-Master, somehow Dr. McGahan is *not* a Mansplainer (important in a specialization that is 95% male). I am/was all of these things and as it turned out Dr. McGahan and his team guiding me through the entire ordeal of prehab+surgery+postop recovery restored my sense of agency in the alien and bewildering process that is our healthcare system, and that confidence in turn has begun to restore my trust in my own body and its physical capabilities. I know the rehab road ahead is long and arduous. So I am reminding myself right now not to forget walking out of Dr. McGahan's office today - limp, pain, and stitch free - thinking about how 7 months from now, maybe, on my 40th birthday -- maybe I might even be able to return to the thing that ruptured my ACL, which, also happens to be the thing that most makes me feel like myself. My only regret is not getting this surgery sooner. read more

Dr. McGahan was my surgeon for a very bad emergency break and I'm lucky that he was! The surgery was successful and my recovery is going well. After two visits to this office, I've been greatly disappointed with the quality of care and service provided here and won't be returning again. I was referred by a friend after I had hip pain from a running injury. During my first appointment I waited for about an hour and a half before seeing Dr. McGahan. No apology from the staff or him after I had to come out of the room to make sure no one had forgotten me. Spent less than 10 minutes with him to review that I might want to get a MRI and then had a few follow up questions for next steps with the PA who responded to everything with just "I'm not sure". After I got the MRI, the staff informed me that Dr. McGahan can only go over my results in person and not over the phone. So I had to come in again, pay another co-fee and wait over an hour past my appointment time for less than a 5 min read out of my results (which I also had read already). When I had time with Dr. McGahan, he was friendly & professional. But there are a lot of sports doctors who are friendly, professional, AND offer a better experience when it comes to the service & their expertise. I recommend you find another doctor. read more

Dr. McGahan is a life saver for my mom. My mom was in excruciating pain on her left knee and couldn't walk and she was in tears. She has pain on her left and right knees for quite sometimes. I went to Dr. McGahan for an issue with my ankle earlier this year and I can honestly say that he has been my favorite doctor ever. Exasperated enough with my clumsy injury, his caring and friendly personality and knowledge on my injury reassured me that it'll all be fine. There's no doubt in my mind that this is his life's passion, and it's extraordinarily evident in the care he provided me. With that being said, I am extremely grateful for Dr. McGahan and I highly recommend him to anyone with orthopedic needs. read more
