You've got to hand it to Pickerington for trying. Apart from the questionable connection between…read morethe city of Pickerington, jazz and ribs (and the blatant rip-off of the bigger Columbus Ribfest), the annual Pickerington Jazz & Blues Ribfest was darn cool. Quaint downtown Pickerington hosted this celebration of smoked meats on August 5. In addition to several food and craft vendors, the fest boasted about half a dozen groups of folks barbecuing up ribs for sale. Surprisingly, the stand run by Open Hands Ministry seemed to be the biggest hit. Live music played on two stages throughout the day, and there was a beer garden. As in years past, the festival was a family affair. There were plenty of diversions for kids. There were animals from the Columbus Zoo and lots of games. Aside from the copious amounts of ribs, the day-long party stayed in pretty familiar small town festival territory. The festival is usually held the first week of August each year. Check it out.

You stand in horribly long lines for mediocre food at best. One thing I noticed is there is no sense of urgency to get you through the line. We stood for at least an hour with only like 15 people ahead of us (I think it was Soul Food) and my husbands pulled chicken sandwhich was all bones, fat and inedible. The only reason why we go is for the jazz that is always very good. My recommendation...eat before, go on a full stomach, and just take chairs to sit and listen to some really good eclectic jazz music.

I visited right before the festival, so there was no one here and nothing happening. Nevertheless, I had a great time exploring and taking photos, because there are lots of things to see. First, you'll want to see the Charles Holliday Covered Bridge that's located on the property. This covered bridge was built in the late 1890s in a location off site, and then was reconstructed in 1982 and moved to its current location at the Historic Lions Club park. A short walk through the park will take you right to this bridge, which you can explore and sit inside. This is the only covered bridge around Buckeye Lake, but it's one of 15 covered bridges in Fairfield County, Ohio! On your way to see the covered bridge, you can't help noticing an area of the park with vintage buildings and signs. This is Heritage Village, an ongoing preservation project by the Millersport Lions Club to move local landmarks and buildings to the park, restore them, and open them up to the public. Visitors to Lions Park can check out the village whenever the park is open (which is every day, from dawn to dusk), but the buildings are typically only open during the Sweet Corn Festival at the end of the summer, and by appointment during the rest of the season. If you happen to visit this area when nothing is going on, it's a bit like visiting a ghost town. But it's here for you to visit and take photos and explore, so feel free to do so.

We first stopped in at the farmer's market, which is located on the corner and has its own parking lot. It had some fun features like classic big chairs for photos and the like. The market itself is packed with tons of produce, goodies, and souvenirs, both inside and outside, including different flavored seasonal donuts, which were delicious! A little bit further down the street is the section with classic autumnal farm fun activities: corn mazes (two - including a mini one for the kids), pick your own produce (apples were ready at the time of our visit, and we enjoyed perusing the orchard), barrel ride, zip line, play area, and apple cannons, which were a blast! A variety of snacks are available for purchase at the snack shop. This area has its own parking available. Staff was helpful and friendly, and we had a lot of fun exploring and enjoying everything Lynd Fruit Farm has to offer.
