Very pleasant Thai restaurant in the heart of District 1 in Vienna. Food was excellent. Service was friendly and English is spoken. Outside tables on courted portion of street so some issues with headlights on you on occasion. Horse drawn carriages also go by frequently as a pleasant distraction. Unusual 3 euro per person "cover charge" for table setting. Small charge for tap water too. Maybe this is an Austrian custom but not something I've ever encountered in the USA. My husband, myself and two friends dined here as we needed a break from schnitzel and we all love Thai. Very disappointed with everything with this meal. Food was mediocre at best and lacked flavor (Thai food lacking flavor--how's that possible?)very overpriced, and poor service (one waiter seemed to be depressed and another waitress was rude). Vienna is one of the last places that you would look for Thai food. Don't worry, I had that impression as well. After being in Eastern Europe for a while, I needed a break from eating schnitzel and pork knuckle at seemingly every meal. Upon our return to Vienna, we were wandering around the Alexanderplatz area and I noticed a Thai restaurant. I remember seeing it on our previous trip a few years ago, but didn't think much of it. While passing it this time around, I figured they must be doing something right if they were still around, and in somewhat of a hidden location as well. Patara Fine Thai Cuisine is located off of the main "street" of Alexanderplatz, which seems to be Graben. It is off a little side street right next to St. Peter Catholic Church. Most people wish to see St. Stephen's Cathedral, so St. Peter's is probably often overlooked as it a much smaller church. We lucked out by being able to grab a table at lunch time. The restaurant was full, and we were flying out later that day, so dinner was a definite no go. We started off with the Green Papaya Salad, which hit all of the notes that Thai cuisine is famous for: sour, sweet, spicy, and salty. The papaya salad sat upon a bed of field greens, which is a little different. The salad was well marinated, while the papaya still retained a bit of crunch. Crushed peanuts were added to also provide a textural contrast. The menu features "set menus" or "tasting menus" at both lunch and dinner, but you are also free to order a la carte. As it was nearing the end of service, we decided to go with the "Thai Set Lunch". The meal included a Spicy Lemongrass Soup with Chicken, and a Grilled Prawn with Peanut Coconut Sauce. The soup had a nice strong citrusy punch thanks to loads of lemongrass infusing the broth. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The grilled prawns were marinated and nicely cooked, so they remained tender and succulent. The Red Prawn Curry with Zucchini came with a side of rice. The curry had a beautiful orange hue, and was bursting with vibrant green colors from the basil and zucchini. The broth was flavorful and smooth, but could have used more heat. The dish was also served with wok fried vegetables with just a splash of oyster sauce to give it a hint of sweetness. The dish was finished off with an orange segment, and a couple slice of refreshingly sweet pineapple. The Stir Fried Pork Filet with Long Beans was also nicely prepared. The pork was tender and flavorful. The dish also contained bell peppers, which added some extra color and texture. The long beans were tender after a nice bath in hot oil. Instead of fruit, we opted for the banana spring rolls which were topped with honey and cashews. This was certain to satisfy and sweet tooth. Of course we couldn't stop there, and got the Pandan Crème Brulee, which was served with a star anise raspberry sauce. The glassy sugary topping had a nice crackling sound upon striking it with the back of a spoon. The custard was silky smooth, with just a hint of pandan leaf hitting the back of your tongue. Service was friendly throughout. I wish we would have wandered in here a few years ago, as the food in this region of Europe can become somewhat monotonous unless you're willing to go out on a limb. I have found that on the few times we have strayed from the norm, the results have been rather disappointing. I am happy to report, that this will not likely be the case with Patara. read more

Dined at this restaurant tonight and had a very satisfying experience. We had the spicy papaya salad, green curry and chicken Pad Thai which were excellent. Authentic flavors with the right amount of spice and heat, and we ended on such a high note with the absolutely divine creme brulee. This is the epitome of very poor customer service. We arrived at the restaurant precisely at 9:10 pm. We were told that the kitchen is closed. They state on their site a closing time of 10 pm. Holy Christ. 50 minutes before closing time you turn away customers. The guy at the front desk started to argue: this is Vienna! Beg your pardon. Modern, chic atmosphere. It doesn't particularly feel Thai, but Patara offers a very pleasant dining experience. I can safely say that the food really is very good, but nothing struck me as exceptional. My favorite dish was the beef filet panang cury with the beef seared just the way I like it and placed on top of an excellent curry. We ordered the desert platter which would have been large enough to serve 3-4 people and offered a good mix of delicious but not overly creative deserts. What else is there to say. The service was very attentive. The obvious price hike can be attributed to Patara's location (in the middle of the fanciest part of the city) and the elegant ambiance it aspires to create. read more

Just ate here while spending a couple days in Vienna. I am an American-born Thai and have to say that the food here is Authentic Thai. Everything was excellent. I recommend the spicy basil duck breast, beef salad, and steamed sea bass with lime dressing. The restaurant is one block off the main pedestrian zone but very close to St Stephens Church in the city center. Highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for great Thai food. The service wasn't fast but they were busy that night. It may also be a cultural thing where they like to stretch out their dinners. read more

My hotel recommended this restaurant and I am always a little wary of hotel recommendations. I was pleasantly surprised. I started with their veggie egg rolls, and had the red curry with tofu as my entree. The food was amazing. It was perfectly spiced. Based on the reviews on various sites the expectations were maybe a bit too high but we left pretty disappointed: * The Thai Bellinis (Prosecco with maracuya juice) were excellent but that's easy. * The dumplings and the scallops for starters were tasteless. * The beef was of excellent quality but the curry it came with was an absolute disaster. * The pak choi in oyster sauce arrived at the end of the meal and was too watery. * We asked for a wine recommendation and that was the worst idea: absolute tasteless watery wine totally overpriced. Found this on yelp and was close to our hotel. After 5 days in Germany and Austria we were craving Thai food. We had the green papaya salad which was bright and spicy as it should be. We then had the prawn and scallops with a condensed tom yum sauce which was amazing along with veggie fried rice with pineapple and cashew. Wonderful meal with a lovely Bio gruener veltliner. Coming from asia and visiting thailand frequently, I can say that the stir-fry here is very authentic. We ordered the tom yum soup to try, but was amused that the soup is served 'western style'. In other words, the soup is served prior to the main course. This is a strange concept for asian food, where the soup is always served with the main meal. We also thought that the soup could have been spicier. Service was also good and friendly. Vey nice Thai restaurant in the centre of Vienna. A lot of tables, in the summer even a few tables outside, practically on the road, near the St. Peter's church. The food is delicious, quite authentic. The service is excellent, they are all extremely friendly. Would expect a bit more elaborate wine list. We got their set lunch choice: pineapple with shrimp dish in a spicy soup (can't remember the name). We asked for extra spicy and boy was it spicy but it's SO good! It came with a nice salad, 1 delicious shrimp wonton, 3 small slices of fruit, stewed cabbage and Jasmine rice. Portions seemed small but it was enough once you start eating. The shrimp wonton was very tasty and I wished we had more. Overall a great experience. The staff was very polite and attentive and the ambience was relaxing. They've more seating upstairs and I bet this place is popular for dinner so be sure to go early or make a reservation. If you're on a budget go for lunch. patara is a Thai restaurant, with high quality kitchen in a higher price class. I can recommend the 3 course menu where you get 4 different small dishes with each course. The prices are proportionate to quality, service, selection an most important taste. read more
