I came in here with my friend, partly to witness the terror that's suggested by everything in the window, partly in hope of finding something that wasn't awful for events.
Amongst the stuff that looks like something straight from that really tacky old american sweet 16 programme (remember that?), there were a few things that were so horrendous, you kind of liked them even though you shouldn't, and some that did work. Everything was priced far higher than it's worth (I'm a designer by trade, I'm more than aware of mark ups, but still), and the lady in there was genuinely one of the rudest people I have encountered in a customer facing role in a LONG time.
The bestie and I both tried one on, after the woman looked us both up and down in disgust and told us there was no way either of us would fit into what we had picked up. My friend looked gorgeous in hers, and if anything, it was too big, which was noted by the lady, who with a spot more negging, remarked "Oh, you could probably do with a size smaller actually, which I wouldn't have expected looking at your shape and posture, definitely looked bigger in your hoodie" Mine was fun, but full of that disgusting boob padding that is horrendously un-boob shaped, and again, far too big on the waist, and tight on the bust- everything in here is definitely made for a particular shape. We asked if I could take a picture of my friend in hers to show her partner, as she was genuinely considering buying it, and she abruptly said no, turning her nose up, and spouting some made up legal reason which I know to be false, but she was so obviously in a sour and judgemental mood, so no use arguing with.
Considering the beautiful things you can find elsewhere in the city, and how much I know I can make someone a one off gown for, this place is tosh. The occasional beautiful item in there is not worth wading through the rubbish and the venom. Try the northern quarter, one off designer makers and vintage shops (the real deal, not thrift), you will get something much more bang for your buck, better fit and quality, and probably not being called fat at the same time. read more
