The process was unnecessarily long, complicated, and frustrating from start to end. We were asked to fill out a form and provide an excessive amount of personal information, only for them to reach out 2 days later to schedule a meeting... which they canceled. Not once. Not twice. Three times. By the fourth attempt, we honestly should've taken that as a sign. When we finally made it to the Zoom call, we mentioned that we already have a cat, which we thought would help speed things up. Somehow, it did the opposite. We were told we had to submit our cat's vaccination records, and IF AND ONLY IF those were approved, we might be allowed to meet the kitten two weeks later, since she was in a foster home. At that point, we were done. We didn't send anything. Instead, we drove straight to the Humane Society. And what a difference. We walked in, met the most adorable kitten on the planet, petted her, filled out some basic paperwork, and were treated like normal, trustworthy people, not suspects under investigation. We walked out with our kitten in under two hours. This place was completely unserious, wildly inefficient, and a total waste of time.

I came on a weekday in the afternoon and was surprised to see the parking lot completely full so it took me a minute to find a spot. That said, when I walked through the doors the fun quickly began. The first thing I noticed was how big and organized the place is. Gone are the days of barely being able to sort through clothing because the aisles are packed too tight and there's too many items on the rack. Everything here is easy peasy. From the furniture and shoes to the homegoods and knick knacks everything had its place. While the prices were a little high compared to places like Goodwill, I wasn't mad about it because Volunteers of America has a great cause and the money raised truly goes back into the community. Supporting veteran services and mental health and recovery are just a few examples that I can really get behind. I ended up spending roughly $25 and walked away with a $200 pair of jeans, a nice pair of boots, glass bottles I've been meaning to buy but luckily found them here, as well as some nice glass decor that matches my living room perfectly. I will absolutely be back and can't wait to see what treasures I may find. See you soon!

The leadership was great at communicating throughout the recruitment process. At the event, all staff members who worked with the volunteers loved doing so and the volunteers had great feed back too. I've also had the pleasure of volunteering myself. I love that the group offers a variety of organizations to become involved with. The flexibility has provided me a volunteer experience that works with my schedule. The other volunteers have always been wonderful and I know I'll continue to volunteer and recommend to friends. Thanks to Columbus Gives Back!

I have made legitimate friendships and had meaningful volunteering experiences. Sometimes, you just need to do something for someone else and CGB is an easy way to connect to volunteering events in the Columbus area. My favorite events locations include Meals on Wheels with LifeCare Alliance and the YWCA Family Center. Not only has CGB helped me help out the community, but I've had a chance to try some amazing restaurants with the volunteers after the events. I would highly recommend volunteering with this group if you're looking to meet people and do something good in the Columbus area.

Another amazing event weekend just wrapped up and I'm so grateful for the chance to participate in…read moresuch a great event! I have biked for the past 6 years to help raise money for Pelotonia's mission of ending cancer. This nonprofit does a great job of creating fundraising events to help riders reach their goals, and the whole weekend of the actual ride is always very inspiring. There are lots of local companies that partner to help out this event on and I hope to continue to be a part of it.

Clarification: I have not been a rider in Pelotonia…read more Pelotonia 2013 was my first experience. Everything I've seen and done in just 2 days was first class and well-planned. Friends of mine are riders who support this grassroots effort to find a cure for cancer by riding in pelotons in 25 mile, 40 mile, 50 mile, 80 mile, 100 mile and, finally, 180 mile stages. I may have that wrong but there are plenty of choices to make when it comes to ride length. Columbus Commons is a perfect place to host Pelotonia. Huge lawn and amenities (ie. sidewalks, water, parking, places for tents and food service, etc). And with its stage there can be music, announcements, speakers and presentations. It's also the best place to tell riders, "I'll meet you near the stage" so no one gets lost. I attended Opening Ceremonies and was immersed in all that can and is Pelotonia. First and foremost, it's all about riders and their interest in beating down cancer. Riders have lost family members, relatives, friends and the likes....... we all have. Pelotonia is the actual material presence of the effort to satisfy the deep desire to eradicate cancer from our lives. The emotion running through the riders and their guests is heavy and palpable. Food and drink is everywhere. Songs and live music is strong. People arm in arm is so cool. Love in mixed with biking. But then.... there is the start. At 6AM riders roll in to Columbus Commons under an electric atmosphere. Wristbands announce the staging. A, B, C, D...... they all head to Rich Street when called upon and THEY'RE OFF! I am seriously considering my first Pelotonia in 2014. My parents were taken from my siblings and I by cancer and its evil enemies in disease. I really, really am looking hard at this. PELOTONIA - it is the real deal.
