Located just above New Street Station in the Pallasades shopping centre, Newsflow is a small,…read moreunassuming newsagent. However, despite its appearances, don't be fooled. If I'm every after a drink, snack, or something to read on the train, I always head here instead of the much larger Smiths down on the station concourse. Newsflow's main selling point is the surprisingly expansive selection of magazines that they have on offer, with more than their wall space seems capable of holding. The prices haven't been ramped up with the proximity to the station in mind, either (a sharing bag of sweets retails for less than £2, which is competitive for anywhere, even large supermarkets), and the staff are always friendly. Even better, there's rarely a queue, meaning it can often prove to faster to go upstairs to Newsflow and then come back down to catch your train than it is to go to the nearby Smiths and queue for five minutes.

I find it very satisfying that the shop is still there and looks pretty much as I remember it as a kid. Whilst it's changed hands a few times over the years it's still a reassuring fixture of the Kingstanding Road. These days I drop in once a month or so to buy tobacco, or some other 'essential' (is tobacco an essential?) as I pass through Kingstanding. As well as a newsagent this is also an off licence - it wasn't like that in my Granddad's day! - so, if the mood takes you, you can always pick up a beer or two for a reasonable price.

A large public car park is located just over the road, for shoppers visiting the Hawthorn shopping centre and several bus stops are within walking distance. Inside, the store is clean, spacious and very well organised. Though small in size, logical organisation and lack of makeshift shelving make ensure that the store never feels cramped, and friendly staff make every visit here a pleasant one. This newsagents is deceptively small. It has a large frontage but inside it seems to be the opposite of a tardis. An anti-tardis, if you will. It can be a bit difficult to walk down the aisles (although that's a generous term) if there are any more than one of you heading for the same area in the shop. They seem to be very well stocked with magazines and small bottles of spirits. And slightly less well-stocked with a decent selection of sandwiches. It's pretty much a standard corner shop/ newsagents really. Except that their chewing gum seems to be vastly expensive. Or maybe it's just that I haven't bought any chewing gum for the past 15 years and the price has gone up considerably...

We're talking a fairly small shop (much smaller than the deceptively large store front would have you believe), crammed full of all manner of day to day goods, from cereal to spam, toiletries and cleaning products to newspapers, magazines, and in the digital age, what seems like an especially large selection of pornographic magazines. Oh, and there's a fair bit of booze as well, all in an area smaller than an average office. It's not particularly special a newsagents and doesn't arose any particular emotion in me, but then again, do any newsagents arouse passion ? Answers on a postcard please......

As you many know Hall Green is a large residential area therefore there are a lot of news agents so I think what would make Sai news stand out is having a larger selection of food and drinks and possibly sell stamps. I thought the owners were friendly as they gave a good greeting when I walked in. The prices are cheap, which is great for everyone who wants to save money and especially as I am a student.

Who knows...) was lovely - really smiley and pleasant. It was also extremely well-stocked - with anything you could ever want from parcel tape to plastic toys - oh, and plenty of newspapers/ magazines, of course. They also had a great selection of general groceries, and the shop was clean and well-presented. Probably the best newsagents I've been to in the past few weeks. He was always really lovely and twinkly with my Nan but these days the shop is run by a younger crowd - who are equally sweet if a little heavy handed on the remote control (when Coronation Street is on, it can get LOUD in there). Popular with students and people from the nearby flats Guraya's is a corner shop and off license whose frontage is pretty much entirely covered by signs - they offer special deals on booze and you get a free bottle of wine if you spend over 20 pounds in store -no fags. They also do a pretty mean samosa here and I sometimes stop off on my way to work to pick up a coffee - half the time they make it out the back for me because the coffee machine is broken. Anyway I really like it here and if you are a student in need of a late night snack or bottle of wine for under a few quid then I suspect you could do worse.

Staff are really lovely and friendly - they seem to know most of the customers who go in which I think is a good sign and they do sweets in those lovely plastic, screw top jars. The toy selection is also really impressive - I think they even sell jigsaws. There's a small freezer section and they also sell cigs, papers and the like. Based just over the road from The Court Oak pub and a few minutes away from Queen's Park, this is a lovely place that's well worth a visit.

Everything you want from a classic newsagents they have here under one roof. Can't fault it really. But it is a little tired and outdated. I have known the shop owner for a long time now having lived in the area for over 10 years. most of their regular customers are known by name so its very much a community shop.

If you're prepared to overlook the style of the store, you can expect to find all the excellent books and magazines that are available in the larger Smiths. At the moment they have a good sale on with many of the hardbacks having huge reductions, I'm not sure if this is the case in other WH Smiths stores but this Northfield branch has included absolutely loads of bestsellers and fairly new releases in this sale. As you go in the store you'll see an excellent range of magazines and newspapers, the choice of mags in here is second to none and I can get all my celeb news, a boxing mag for my fella and comics for the kids. I always have a mooch around the paperbacks as sometimes you'll find a book on the shelf which has been unceremoniously reduced in price and then you feel that you've had a real bargain! There's a brilliant choice of paperbacks ranging from classics to new chick lit releases. There's also a decent non-fiction section which included biographies, reference books, craft books and anything else you can think of. Prices for these are quite expensive and I'd rather borrow these from the library than pay over the odds like this. Staff in WH Smiths are generally knowledgeable about the books they sell, I've never been given any bad advice in this branch and whenever I ask for the location of a specific book they have taken me straight there without sending me all around the shop!
