They also do a kick ass framing job with every type of picture frame you could imagine. There is one particular Connecticut artist something Roy who paints these bright sheep paintings...so cute! And he's featured in the Starbucks right down the street. Even if you're not going to buy anything, this place is so fun to walk through. It's like a free museum with a really friendly staff. It's right next to the Bagel shop and Old Navy on Rt. 3A in Hingham.

My loss but now I know and will most certainly be back. I had gotten word from my cousin Diana who is a wonderful artist in her own right, that a Rhode Island artist by the name of Anthony Tomaselli had a show here. I promptly drove over...just a 1/2 mile or so from downtown Hingham proper and there it was. It's a small, pretty and intimate space. A man named Kevin (the owner?) greeted me and was happy to tell me about the current Tomaselli exhibit. My cousin had studied under him in Providence RI some years ago and keeps up with his work. Tomaselli was new to me but I liked what I saw of his moody oils. According to Kevin,Tomaselli's newer works were the several paintings in a brighter, more colorful palate...lots of boats and New England seascapes. Other paintings were lovely but more muted. There were a few cityscapes as well. These brighter colored oils were my favorites particularly of the boats. Kevin let me know that he welcomes folks who treat South Street Gallery like a museum and who just want to come in a look at the art. No upselling here which was refreshing. That said, the prices on some of the Tomaselli art was in reach and frankly I wouldn't mind owning one of the boat pieces. I was happy to note that South Street Gallery does framing work and seemed to have a wide selection of frames on hand. On occasion I have new things I want to hang. Unlike my husband who believes one should learn the art of framing (he's not bad!), I would rather leave that to a professional. If you are in the Hingham area, it is worth a stop in this lovely gallery. They have a website where you can sign up to hear about new shows and also an Instagram page where you find the same information. The Tomaselli exhibit will be there through the end of August.

Unfortunately, I never got a chance to see what kind of work they do here, because the prices that were quoted were so astronomical. I brought in a couple of pieces to be framed and the young man who was helping me, while very nice, did not inspire confidence. He was fairly rough around the edges, covered in ink, didn't seem to know his stuff when it came to offering advice, and he seemed to be winging it. Nevertheless, I was willing to give them a try. I picked out the frames and mattes I wanted, but when he quoted the price, I felt like I was on a hidden camera show. When I told him that the prices seemed extremely high, he said he could knock off 15%. When I said it still seemed excessive, he said he could do a 20% discount, but any further and he would lose his job. Even at a 20% discount, the price was absurd. Moreover, I felt like I was being taken advantage of because I had told him my address before the price quote. If I'd said I was from a less expensive zip code, would the discounted price have been offered first? Give me your best price first! Otherwise, you just look like you're ripping people off. It's very clear that they are using their Hingham Square location as a reason to massively inflate the prices. There is a happy ending, however. I took my stuff to Aisling Gallery, and was helped by a very capable staff member. The finished pieces look spectacular, and they did it for 50% (actually, a hair below 50%) of what Framing Concepts wanted, even with their "discount." The take home message is clear. Aisling Gallery is the only place I will ever go to now.

It was an old black & white image (from city archives) of my mom's childhood home in Philly. Despite being absolutely swamped with projects (I waited behind several people just to speak with him), Tom took the time to make the project great. He sifted through frames to find ones he felt fit the era of the photo. And he spent more time choosing the right mat color than I could ever imagine. Who knew there were so many shades of gray, and that one shade would really make the difference in how a b/w photo looks? His attention to detail--and his ability to get the project completed before the holiday--were impressive. My mom LOVED the photo, and it hangs proudly at the entrance to her home. When I came back to MA after Christmas, we stopped by for another look. The art gallery is well lit and spaced "okay", there were some empty gaps and odd spacing here and there. Most art was framed (which was included in the price), some were just prints, others had been made into greeting cards, and there was also a case that held other forms of art media. The painting he had previously looked at was $75, a bargain. Others we saw ranged from $50s-$300. Subjects were mostly nature and still life; I don't recall seeing any abstractions, but I could be wrong. Most of the paintings were "above average" for amateurs but definitely not the upper echelon of amateur art. Two friendly employees staffed the front desk, and they offered to gift wrap the painting for us to take home. A quick and easy gift for the home or for a family member or friend. Definitely worth peeking in.
