My friend's house was also on the programme once too; possibly one of the biggest events in Formby's recent history. So it is with some trepidation that I usually enter into shops like Twigg in Maghull. Twigg specialises in handmade interior decorations and gifts and I wouldn't normally have bothered but I was with my girlfriend and she loves this kind of stuff, so I willingly went along for the ride so to speak. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the pieces on display there as they were all finely crafted and beautifully presented. I'm not usually particularly taken by handmade bits and bobs like this (I am a man after all, far too manly for this type of thing, honest...) but the products sold at Twigg really are of the highest quality and available at a decent price. If/when I ever own a home (I hope it's more a question of when than if) then I will definitely check out Twigg again and you should too.

You simply must pop in if you like anything handmade, shabby chic décor, or writerly and romantic gifts like pretty notebooks and cute décor. As a handmade business owner myself, I always want to highly recommend other handmade artists and shop owners. Not everything for sale at Twigg is handmade, but all of her gorgeous designer greeting cards are intricately hand designed--and they are fabulous! I highly recommend this shop!

I like dressing up about as much as any normal man should do, e.g. for fancy dress parties when you…read morego the whole hog, or if you're re-enacting The Rocky Horror Show down your local pub of a Saturday night. I've never been into this half-arsed university fancy dress thing though, which basically ends up being a competition by girls to see who can look the most slutty (not that I'm complaining about scantily-clad females, honest). However when entering Maghull's Fancy Dress Box, it's hard not to get carried away and dress up in the various and wide-ranging costumes they have both on sale or to hire. The outfits there are generally of a decent standard and certainly better than any local Smiffy's would have and they also stock various other bits and pieces for nights like stag and hen dos or birthday celebrations that can be very useful (they advertise themselves as a "1 Stop Party Shop"). They also have bouncy castles available for hire for just thirty pounds, perfect for those kid's parties where all the adults are waiting for the kids to tire/go to bed so they can all get on the bouncy castle. A very weird and wonderful place to go for any fancy dress or party needs.

To be honest, it is a little tatty in style but its almost like a small version of those pound shops you find around. The place can feel a little crammed at times especially when there are customers trying to brush past you. It probably has all your bare essentials in terms of basic products for the home such as stationery, cleaning products and cheap gifts and ornaments. It is also adequate for children's toys but as simple as you can get. If you want something simple but don't really have much of a target what to buy, you won't spend a lot in here.

This small framing shop holds a lot more than meets the eye. At least, it did the last time I was…read moreinside, about a year ago. They also sell artwork, and art supplies. When I lived in this area, it was so hard to find anything craft-related locally, and when I discovered this shop I was thrilled because they sold varnishes, and I was looking for a clear varnish at the time. It's so hard to find that anywhere in Liverpool without going to a hardware store--and I didn't really want hardware type varnish. I was also told at the time that certain supplies could be ordered in to the shop if you didn't see what you wanted. I'm not sure if the same rules still apply or not since it's been a while.
