Painted bright blue outside, it's a cute, old fashioned store with shelves and units groaning with a rainbow of yarns, buttons, threads, zips, patterns and knitting needles. Some of the stock is a bit too twee for my taste but the ladies that run the shop clearly make a conscious effort to try and keep up with trends and also offer crocheted and knitted scarves and babywear.

Mummy dearest used to buy all her wool here to knit jumpers for us lucky kids, she'd also get all the obligatory extras: needles, zips, ribbon and thread etc. To be honest, I didn't think Mayfair would survive the recession but it's going strong; perhaps people have turned to making and mending in the old wartime spirit or developed an interest in cheaper hobbies.

I suggest you try and park on the side streets on the opposite side of the main road. The shop sells a wide range of fabrics, from voiles for net curtains, cotton florals for dress making, and heavy linens and damasks for curtain making and soft furnishings. There is a set price per metre, I think at the moment its £3 per mete, although they also sell some bargain/ sale items and end of roll offers etc. They sell threds, curtain dressings, cushions, and ribbons for all your dressmaking needs, plus a small selction of soft furnishings and furniture, lamps etc. The prices are very reasonable.

They sell a much better range of gifts and wrapping paper/bags etc than the other store as well as a fancier range of cards. I must admit, as the price goes up the standard of service goes down. The staff in here have, on occasion, been quite brusque and rather unhelpful. I have asked if something is stocked and I have recieved a flat no, no apology or suggested alternative, no half-hearted look, just "no". end of. so off we go to the cheap shop then...
