tldr: if you want a well-priced and skilled face painter, this person is for you. But it also means lack of communication and a rude painter. Longer version: I think it's helpful to provide an update on Yelp since I have noticed most of Elva's reviews are from years ago. I reached out to Elva three days before my child's party because my original painter could not attend last-minute. Given her 5-start Yelp page, I thought it would be fine to move forward. Unfortunately I can't recommend this face painter based on my experience with her for my child's 5th birthday party for the following reasons: 1. Not on time - We agreed that she would start at 11:45am. Instead I was calling her at 11:55am to ask where she was. She picked up her phone and said "I'm here". She was a few minutes away from entering the parking lot. 2. Lack of communication - there was some lack of communication when making arrangements for the party already, but the worst was on the day of when she did not arrive/was not ready at the scheduled time. Nor did she reach out to let me know. We modified our schedule slightly since Elva was not around at 11:45am or prior to that. So when she arrived at noon, I asked if we could change our start time to 12:15pm, to which she responded curtly, "no, I'm going to start now in a couple minutes" 3. We asked all our vendors to mask. She said she cannot because it fogs up her glasses but she'll wear a face shield. I noticed she attempted with the face mask in the beginning but it wasn't work for her. I appreciated her attempt. 4. There were 2 kids left and it would go beyond her 1-hour duty. She notified us and said that either the kids would not get their face painted or we have to pay for an extra half an hour of service. We asked if we can pay for each child to which she curtly responded no. So we had to pay for an extra half hour which is more than we needed (and how can we not let these kids who have been waiting so patiently to not get their face painted?) But really, she just wasn't warm or friendly to anyone. She came late to do her work, get her money, and leave. It felt like a waste to pay for that extra 30 minutes because she wasn't pleasant to work with at all. I wish I could feel relieved and happy about how everything about my child's birthday turned out today, but I don't because of my experience with this vendor. My husband is one to give the benefit of the doubt to everyone but he also felt the lack of communication and warmth. Edited to add: It is true that she accommodated our Covid/health safety requests, including sanitizing the makeup brushes inbetween. As I mentioned at the beginning, she is a skilled artist and the work looked nice on the kids. read more

I hired Elva and her son for my daughters Carnival Theme 4th birthday party on April 26th. I was offered a great deal for a combination of balloon art and face painting. She was very friendly over the phone and seemed to be an easy going lady. 1. Prior to reservations I explained how big Ed Levin park is, and I gave her the reserved area name and specific directions for her to find my area. Of course, she got lost and was very upset by the time she reached our reserved area. Right away she told me she was not staying longer than the hour I had reserved. When I made the reservations she had said depending on how many kids showed up she'd be able to stay longer to finish up the kids. She did not. 2. She told me she had paid $15 for parking and was very upset, when in reality parking was $6. I told her I'd give her the cash before she left since I had not mentioned a parking fee (my bad). 3. As soon as she was settled she began marking the children's hands with numbers to make sure she only did a specific amount of children. This would have not bothered me if she wasn't rude and yelling at the kids to stay in line. 4. On one occasion a child was on the seat telling her what they wanted painted. Elva became very annoyed and yelled out "Who's kid is this." Complete shocker!!! I was so embarrassed. Once the mother of the child walked up to her she put on a fake grin and asked if it was ok to paint on the child's hand. 5. The moms were crowding around the set up area where Elva was painting, and called me over. I went over and asked what was going on. Many of them said she was being very rude to the children, and completely unprofessional. I stuck around and witnessed the same. Her tone was very unprofessional when dealing with children, and she was just straight up rude with everyone. 6. I didn't give it one star, because other than her rude attitude and trying to rip me off for parking (which I didn't pay for after all of this occurred) she was an amazing artist. There wasn't anything she didn't know to do, and her paintings were clean and exact to the T on what the characters look like. She's a great artist, and her son was amazing as well (no complaints for him), but Elva's attitude downgraded her quality of work. If this woman cleans up her attitude then I believe she is a wonderful person to hire for face painting. If not, she's not even worth it, believe me she will make you look so bad in front of your guests. read more

I sourced Elva off Yelp. Now that my event is over, it's time to pay it forward to other Yelpers :) Elva was everything that prior reviewers promised. Courteous, timely, professional, punctual and reasonable with her pricing. The points I appreciated most were as follows. 1) The day of the event had bad weather and everybody's travel timings were thrown off kilter, including mine. Elva, however, made it exactly on time. 2) She delivers her services simultaneously....meaning, she has one person for each of ballon-making, face painting and tattoos. The kids had everything almost on-demand. No long lines of fidgety kids, no tantrums for who goes first etc. 3) When I needed to extend by half an hour, I did not have the time to discuss the rate since I was beseiged by guests.The volume of kids in that last 30 minutes was lesser and Elva priced that 30 minutes accordingly...meaning, very reasonably. 4) All the kids and moms were super happy with the balloons and paintings. Cheapest face painter and balloonist combo by far! I checked! She gave us a killer deal for an hour and a half and included her daughter and son working as a balloonist and tattoo applier. Elva is a great face painter and tries to get all the kids done during her time at the party. She comes super early to set up and was a hit at the party. The balloonist only does very simple balloon creations like swords, flower bracelets, and animals so if you are looking for a really great balloonist, you might want to hire a separate one instead. Party creations specializes in face painting and offers the other services as a bonus to have at your party. Some of the moms asked for her card. I hired Elva for face painting and balloon twisting a few weeks ago. She was very pleasant to work with and easy to communicate with as she responded promptly through email. Since I was hosting, I was busy when she arrived but luckily she needed very little direction from me. She set up quickly as got to painting immediately. Many of the guest requested personalized art and she was very accommodating, they just showed her a picture and she was able to replicate it, she is very talented and artistic. Elva had two young adults with her, I think they were her children. They were the ones doing the balloon twisting and were very professional and nice. Elva was fantastic! I contacted Elva for my son's first birthday celebration. She responded promptly, gave me very competitive quote for face painting and balloon twisting courtesy of her son. My son's party was Superman theme, and Elva's son even came dressed as Clark Kent with his Superman tee under a white collar dress shirt, specs and the curly hair and all! What a sweetheart! The team were extremely punctual and had a 3rd balloon artist with them as well. Elva has a # system so the kids do not have to wait in line and can go play in the jumper or get balloons. I thought this worked out very well, but I can tell some parents didn't like it. Let me tell Ya...you can't please them all. I had two moms tell me Elva was too slow. She was 50 minutes in and had just called #6--note she started #1 after having painted one child already, so in actuality, she was at the 7th kid. I was getting worried the moms would spread the negativity since they seemed so displeased so I went over to Elva to ask her if she could go a little faster. Mind you, I was very embarrassed to do this...I'm no artist but I do like to doodle myself and if someone rushed me I would be PO-ed! Elva was very professional. She asked me what time it was and explained some kids are choosing more elaborate designs--then concluded she will work faster. I felt so bad but Elva was awesome! She got through all the kids (not all of them wanted face painting) and then went to find me to round up adults that want to get painted. I will definitely hire Elva again! I needed to find face painters and balloon twisters for a celebration in one of my job's new stores. I used Yelp to contact various companies in the San Jose area for price quotes. I came across all the positive reviews for Party Creations and gave them a call. Elva was very friendly and helpful over the phone. Being that I called from another state and had to change the date of my event several times, she was kind enough to hold a couple dates for me until I got the confirmation. She even gave me a better price rate than a couple other face painters/balloon twisters companies, which included 2 hours of 1 face painter and 2 balloon twisters. Although I couldn't be there for the actual event, I saw some pictures...and I was delighted to see the great work on the kids' faces and balloons. She is always there for my friends parties as well, they are always so impressed with her at my parties and always ask me for her info to hire her. I contacted Elva just a little over a week before my 2013 wedding after my other balloon twister/artist cancelled on us. She responded shortly after my inquiry and we were lucky enough that Elva and her team were available to help us! Elva was very professional in her communications with me, but I also knew by her easy-going tone, she would provide fun entertainment for our guests. The day of our wedding, our wedding coordinator let us know when she arrived, and she was even early! Of course like any wedding, we were running overtime and even though we only booked her for a certain period of time, she was able to accommodate us and stay longer. Our guests had nothing, but good things to say about Elva and her team. We saw not only the younger guests, but older guests as well enjoying the balloon creations they were able to make. We had party creations come and the face painting was one of the best I have ever seen. She did come a little late but she stayed the full amount of time and even a little extra to finish some of the kids. All the parents said she was amazing!! The balloon making was ok. I believe they were her kids who were very friendly and good with 15 kids surrounding them asking for balloons. I do wish she had some examples up of diffrent balloons because almost all the kids just had swords or wands since they didn't know what to get. This is just additional info as a response to Elva's predictable response to my review. I had no disagreement on Elva ability to paint, especially paint from her samples. But she definitely does NOT have the right attitude/personality to be in this kind of business unless she's willing to change Or she just had a bad day at my party! Well, it doesn't matter what's her excuse!!! The children might have enjoyed her painting but they definitely didn't enjoy her present. I asked my own kids and at least 10 other kids and they all came back with similar answer with the bottom line is "She's mean" All other parents have similar comments that she was not very nice/friendly. If she thought I was wrongfully giving her this review, I can ask all other parents to put in their review which would do more damage. It's very predictable that she would offer a huge discount to others and try to redeem herself. I guess whoever is desperate for discount should give it a try! I sure believe in giving people a 2nd chance... Anyway, the bottom line is my review truly reflects my experience with the service she provided on 5/5/13. You can take it or leave it! Hired Elva based on the great yelp reviews. But specifically her style of face painting. Not all face painters are the same and she definitely has the natural talent in making some very detailed creations. All the parents that attended my daughters birthday on 6/22, commented on the beautiful paintings. I think most of the children got their painting on their arrms, good thing too because it was extremely hot that day. the painting would have simply melted off them with their sweat. Most impressive was the large pic board she had to give the kids choices of what they wanted. Also right before the hr was up she notified me so that I was able to do a last call. I had about 17 kids there and she got through them in a hr. We also hired the balloonist, he was very patient wiht the children. Because of the heat and the grass the balloons kept popping and he would go ahead and make another. All in all, I was very happy with them. Honestly her rate was very reasonable given her talent. I found Elva on yelp and was beyond pleased with her work and professionalism. The mother-daughter team is extremely talented, great with kids, and fast! It feels great to support a local family-owned business and her rates are very reasonable. Overall, Elva was very pleasant to work with and even called to tell me she was running a few minutes late.
