They're chatty, friendly, full of information - and if they can't tell you something then they go out of their way to find someone who can. I've had pool guards politely step in to help teach my son and daughter to swim - just little tips to help the parental lessons. When I turned up without change for the pool lockers (it's a £1 coin), a member of staff took 90-something pence from me and told me not to worry about the pennies. The gym is good and personal trainers are available, and the main hall is used frequently for sporting tuition and markets. Even the canteen is pleasant with its view of the pool. Quibbles? The car park often gets rammed due to sheer popularity and you have to be at least 16 (I think) to look after another child in the swimming pool. This makes it a little awkward for me to take all three of our kids unless my wife joins us. Talking of kids, if you live in Glasgow make sure they sign up for their free "Kidz Card" as it gives whopping discounts here.

Large halls available for hire, ranging from badminton to football, just one thing try and avoid hiring a court next to the aerobic classes, way to loud, get fit and get hearing damage at the same time. Recently opened a new gym here as well, haven't had a chance to go in yet but I hear it is a vast improvement over the old one which was rather tight on space. The Gorbals Leisure Centre was the flagship in Glasgow's attempt to modernise its facilities: apart…read morefrom some teething troubles in the early years, it has become a well-used and popular location. The gym is a small, compared to Bellahouston and lacks much in the way of free weights: most of the space is given over to cardiovascular equipment like treadmills. But, it has the little TV screens on each item, so you can watch Jeremy Kyle as you pound out the miles. The swimming pool is the big attraction- it has a smaller pool for kids, with rapids and a circuit that turns into a desperate race against the artificial tide. There are also jacuzzis by this pool, which end up being the main attraction. Most people fit in their lengths of the main pool when the jacuzzi is switched off to be refreshed. The sauna and jacuzzi suite is larger- and even more popular. The first time I went there, I noticed many men standing at the large windows that look over the pool. "That's odd," I thought. "I wouldn't stand over there, in case the people in the pool below thought I was leching at the women in bikinis." Well, at least I can get a steam room to myself.

I was so sure I'd already reviewed St Vincent BC! Oh well…read more.. I've been frequenting this bowling club for long and weary; both my dad and borther are now members and my uncle and grandpa have also been members in the past also. The halls have hosted various May family occasions; wakes, birthdays and my dad has threatened in the past that if ever I get married, this is where we're having the reception if he foots the bill! I might be biased since St Vincent BC has been an integral part of my life, but it is genuinely a brilliant club, filled with brilliant people. You can hire the hall for up to 100 people for any occasion, and the lovely catering ladies will also offer their services to prepare either a buffet, canapes or a sit-down meal for a pretty good price. You can also (provided you let the club know) bring in caterers or food from nearby establishments to cater your event; the club, in the past, has had Old Salty's, Crabshakk and Mother India's catering for them in the past. As is befitting any bowling club, the drinks prices are crazy cheap and there is generally a pretty good selection on hand. If you're organising an event and you need a specific drink, John on the bar can usually help you out in finding it and stocking it for you. The members and the board in the club are all true gentlemen (Again, I may be biased since I've known many of them since I was a wean!) - no problem is too big or small and they are more than willing to help you with anything. They are always more than happy to welcome new members of any age, so if you fancy coming down to try your hand at lawn bowls, just give them a call and someone can show you the rules and lend you some bowls!

Overall, a great sports club, although members have to dig deep in their pockets.

I'm not really sure where to classify it : it has the layout and atmosphere of a cafe but the staff and clientele are very formal. It feels slightly old fashioned but I seem to be in a minority because it's so busy!!! Ordered lunch once the rest of the family arrived. More confusion though - menu is quite simple: sandwiches, burgers, pasta, pizza etc. But the presentation was fussy and formal. The (burnt) kids pizza came with a side salad which was served in a cup and saucer. The (enormous) club sandwich came on a board rather than a plate. All a bit fussy for the simple food it should have been. The prices were OK - less than £5 for the kids main courses; an omelette was around £8. It was all ok and I won't be rushing back.

You either pay the price and join and know it is expensive or you leave and go to a less salubrious club. Parklands is quality in many areas. The gym is jam packed with Hi-Tec Nautilus machines and provides a really cool place to workout in and surpasses my old club like the Ivy Court Leisure club in Shawlands that I was at previous to joining Parkies. The place at times was not well looked after with some of the gym equipment fraying and falling apart, the shower area having cracked tiles, broken showerheads and lots of little issues but in general the place is as pukka as you will find and although I have to say the prices are sky high they did do a refit which upgraded a lot of the problems. If you are a snob like me and prefer to workout away from the great unwashed and avoid the riffraff then Parklands is the perfect place to be, otherwise you can just go to John Lloyds in Deaconsbank or the massive one down in Giffnock and mingle with the scum, perhaps get your tyres slashed or mugged when you leave at night but if you try them; And I have! You will realise why Parklands is more expensive, it is just a better experience. Never seen a problem in Parklands since the early years when it first opened and all the n'eer do wells from the village started coming in for a swally and a fight on the Weekend, mind you they even had a local drug dealer who has done time for GBH working in the gym which was a bit of a surprise but maybe he is gone now...Hopefully but then there have always been drug dealers in any gym from Parklands to Ivy court punting their Anabol and steroid junky food so no change there then - They really should be careful with the fact there are quite a few Police officers and ex police officers like me working out there - Naughty naughty!!! All in all Parklands is a bit of an institution in the Mearns and in all my years I haven't found a more pukka club with the exception of Golds Gym in California or the Toliar in Slovakia so if you have money to burn, prefer to workout in a gym with other toffee nosed snobs who know the price of everything but the value of nothing, you will do quite well here!
