I worship the ground Andrea walks on. Except I know if I literally did that, she would gently and lovingly tell me that it's me and my body that are amazing, and that all she did was be there in case of an emergency. While this is technically true, my and my baby's experience of being cared for by Andrea is truly deserving of worship.
I'm a full time doula, so when it came to finding a midwife for my son's birth I had VERY high standards. After meeting with several other midwives in the Bay area, my partner and I knew Andrea was perfect for us.
There are several things she does that make her practice stand out as exceptional.
The first is just that she's just really, really good at her job, i.e. helping people give birth safely and helping their newborns transition well into the world. She has a huge amount of experience and it shows. My partner and I always felt that we and the safety of our child were in the best of hands.
The rest of what she does goes above and beyond checking the "baby and parent are safe" checkboxes.
Andrea is one of the kindest humans alive. She made me feel utterly empowered every step of the way. You can tell she does this work because she believes in the inherent power of birthing people, and their right to birth not just in safety but while also feeling loved and valued. That made all the difference to me (and in my experience as a doula, I know that makes all the difference no matter where you give birth). Multiple times during my labor I turned to her and asked if I was doing something "right" or "wrong" and she always replied, "You're perfect. Just keep doing exactly what your body is telling you. I'll let you know if there is ever anything concerning, but everything is going perfectly right now."
At every appointment she took the time to answer all of my questions without ever making me feel rushed, or anything less than important. She also has this knack for knowing when a particular fear is crossing my mind, and she always addressed it with grace, never making me feel silly for being scared, or ignorant for not knowing a certain piece of information. She simultaneously felt like a friend, ally, sister and parent.
Unlike many midwives, she includes childbirth education in her appointments, so my partner was easily brought up to speed about everything from what positions would be helpful during labor, to strategies to help with my recovery after giving birth.
The actual birth itself could not have been more perfect. From the moment I heard her voice over the phone reassuring me that yes, this was indeed labor, and that yes, I got this, I felt completely safe and supported. She was present in all the right ways, working seamlessly with my doula and partner to give me the space or coaching I needed at any given moment.
By choice I never got a single cervical exam-- Andrea just kept reassuring me that all was well, that my baby was coming, and that all I had to think about was connecting with my body and my baby. She coached my partner on how he could catch the baby, and after only 8 hrs of active labor, my baby was born into my partner's hands under the Christmas lights at home. It was better than I ever could have imagined.
What happened next was just as important. Andrea checked in on me every few days over the following weeks, making sure that my body, mind, and emotions were well, that breastfeeding was going smoothly, that my baby was growing healthily, and that my partner and I were being as supported as possible by our community. She made me feel like a beloved queen. After 6 weeks she held a cerrada ceremony for me at our final visit, and the experience was too special to put into words.
That ceremony was indicative of one of my other favorite things about the care she provides: while providing evidence-based practice, Andrea incorporates traditional birthing practices into her care. I don't know what I would have done without the rebozo techniques she taught my partner which made me infinitely more comfortable during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Her birth justice framework of empowering BIPOC families is what's urgently needed right now, and the ripple effects are felt in her community.
TL;DR Andrea is a saint, she'll keep you safe and make you feel like the most badass birthing person and parent in the universe, and every parent/baby who has ever worked with her is the luckiest in the universe. read more
