The most appalling and unprofessional experience with an estate agents I have ever had in my life!
I used the branch in headingley, Leeds, I was looking for university accommodation with 4 friends. The woman, polite enough, took us around a few properties briefly, she looked like she had other places to be. Eventually we set our eyes on a lower ground apartment on bainbrigge road, just near to the busy street of heaidngley.
The day that the estate agents and ourselves agreed to take the keys is where the nightmare started. I was the first of my housemates to move in, I arrived at the house to be greeted by a disgusting smell. The house had not been cleaned at all. And when I say not cleaned, I do not mean it was missing being hoovered. The estate agents had let us move into a house that was trashed, there was full bags of McDonald's left in the living room, people's underwear (not all clean) left In our drawers in the bedrooms and stains down the two toilets. Straight away, I called the estate agents obviously asking hat was going on. They said they would send a cleaner out the same day and that they were dead fully sorry. 2 days later, my friend moved in and we cleaned the whole house ourselves as no one turned up.
After about 1 month after trying to live in this hell hole, me and my flat mates all started to get chesty coughs. The walls were wet with damp. One of the walls in my bedroom was soaking wet all the way through, and this caused the mold to begin. Next to each of our windows in our bedrooms was a huge scattering of thick black mold. Being naive teenagers, we thought this was normal and just cleaned it ourselves. After calling the estate agents nearly every day, after they didn't do anything about this, the girl came over to our house and asked us why we hadn't been opening the windows constantly, as if this would make it all disappear.
Nearly every day we had to chase up calls with this estate agents as they never seemed to want to fix things for us, probably because they had our money already. The worst part comes to when my poor friend (who had the bottom bedroom) had to move out and live with her dad while still paying her rent. Her bedroom was unliveable. Right next to the bathroom, when ever anyone used the toilet or the shower, the water would leak straight away into her room. This left her whole carpet constantly soaking wet, and by that I mean you could easily see it.
This caused mould to start growing all over her floor. Her floor ended up being completely covered in mushrooms, absolutely disgusting. She was going through her final exams and couldnt live in the room she was paying for. So again, we called up the estate agents to come over and fix this, after sending about 5 emails (all still on record) and about 3 weeks later they sent 2 people around. The first was one of the girls that works at the office, she saw the state of the house and said she felt sorry for us and that she wouldn't live there. The second was a handyman, who shoved a little machine into the room with the soaking wet floor and infested mushrooms, hoping that by clearing up the air a little this would all be hunky dorey.
In the end, it can almost be seen as a good thing that they didn't bother with us the whole time the let us move into this disgusting house. As we got sick of calling them nearly every day, we called the environmental health agency instead, who came around and took photos of every room. We also have before and after pictures, and the time frames, so you can see how long it took to receive any help! The health services were appalled and involved a local newspaper and radio station. Jokes on them! read more
