Parkinson's Resource Organization (PRO) is a non-profit charity "working so no one is isolated because of Parkinson's" by "helping families affected by Parkinson's, even if the family is one, and that one is the person with Parkinson's"
We are an educational and support model with a robust website www.parkinsonsresource.org wherein we are building a one-click resource directory called The Wellness Village.
History
Established in 1990.
In 1989-1990 there were many support groups but there were NONE that were for me, Jo Rosen. I was the adult child of a person living with Parkinson's and I was soon to become the spouse of a person with Parkinson's. Where was I going to go to discuss my issues and concerns? This, we thought, would be our niche. We would advocate for, educate, emotionally support and supply respite to the caregivers of People with Parkinson's.
On December 17, 1990 we were incorporated, registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, and registered with the Attorney General of the State of California.
Meet the Manager: Jo R.
I am the visionary of the first Emotional and educational support organization in the Parkinson's world. Prior to our organization, the focus in the Parkinson's world was only on research. We work so no one is isolated because of Parkinson's and we continue doing this until a cure is found. We have support groups throughout Southern California, A monthly newsletter that goes throughout the world and an interactive website, in addition to doing one-on-one coaching to caregivers and People with Parkinson's.
Awards I have received: The Elder Leadership Award from the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys presented Nov 11, 2011; California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA) Public Service Award, Palm Desert Historic Society Palm Award, Frances E. Jemmott Award from Share Recovery-Los Angeles, Making Democracy Work from The League of Women Voters - Long Beach Area, Toastmaster of the Year, Soroptimist International Woman of Distinction in Health and Woman of Distinction
