I also appreciate that they provide a few pieces of equipment like the tombstone-shaped paddle boards and pool weights, which add variety to a workout. One thing to be aware of is that you'll want to bring your own personal hygiene items--there also aren't wipes for cleaning lockers nor are locks provided. It might be helpful if the center gave clearer guidance on what to bring so guests can come prepared. The atmosphere is generally peaceful, though if the boombox-style aerobics class isn't your preference, you'll want to check the schedule ahead of time. The schedule is posted week-to-week, so it's worth planning around if you're looking for a quieter, more meditative swim. Beyond the obvious caveat about being available only to students and faculty, that means that it is subject to strange scheduling mishaps that even students must beware of. Make sure that you stay very, very up to date on all of the various programs and classes that rotate in and out of here, since your independent usage will take a back seat to university events (which will often fill up the whole place).

I'll never forget that class. We had aerobics in an un-air-conditioned room in the 90+ degree weather of August and September; and then we had water aerobics at Bowman Gray during the chilly fall-to-winter months of November and December. Despite these logistics, I did enjoy getting to play in the pool some -- even if water aerobics seemed a little more for the 60-and-up crowd. The pool is big. we had one area partitioned for our class; but there are plenty of 50-meter lanes and 25-meter lanes, so you can do some serious laps. I attended an old boyfriend's sister's swim-meet here; it was an all-day affair with several competing teams, but the facility has plenty of space to accommodate that. If you're a student, you can also expect to do your swim-test requirement here (if they are indeed still enforcing that graduation stipulation). This past weekend was a hockey game and a swim meet so I had to park very far away because I didn't get there early enough. The facility is always clean and looks well maintained. It is a little difficult to navigate if you're not exactly sure where you're going, but I always eventually find my way. They have so many amenities! There is a gym, a pool, an ice rink, and even a concession station! There's probably much more that I haven't seen, but it looks like they have a lot to offer. My best friend's family has a membership and they are there weekly if not multiple times a week. If I had kids and lived in Orange County, I would definitely check this out.

This pool is the home to the Villages of Cornwallis residents as well as Tarleton East and West…read moreresidents. It's a great pool with a variety of sun chairs, tables and umbrellas. You'll find an old grill outside the pool area (it's rather dirty, I wouldn't recommend using unless a thorough clearing came first), clean bathrooms, an outdoor shower and vending machines. Food and beverages are welcome, as long as you keep the glass bottles away (alcohol allowed). Although there is no lifeguard on duty, they usually do have a resident "on guard" during the weekends to make sure residents aren't bringing in too many guests {although I don't recall what the guest policy is, we've never had a problem in that area}. You will need a keycard to enter the pool area. The pool is an "L" shape, with water heights ranging from 2 feet to 5 feet. It's long enough to do laps in but also includes an area for "play". They keep it clean and the pH checked, so you'll feel comfortable when you take a dip. If you live in the community, you should definitely take advantage. And if not, become my friend!

Stoneridge has had signs advertising membership so I decided to check it out. I can't speak for the…read morepool facilities since that's not open yet, but one thing that worries me is the poor conditions of the playground. I'm attaching pictures but basically there are fallen trees, wobbly stairs, and parts of it have fallen apart completely. I would be scared to let children play here. I hope it's not indicative of how they treat their facilities and families. It's in the middle of a neighborhood so it seems like a lot of people could benefit from the upkeep. Hopefully they will fix this soon!

This review is exclusively about the Fitness Center (the building with the indoor exercise…read moreequipment) at Holmes Sr. Recreation Center. The Fitness Center is in a separate building from the rest of the main facility and its opening hours are different from the rest of the facility. The hours are rather odd but may be due to the lack of staffing though I'm not sure about that. In terms of the equipment, the Fitness Center has two treadmills, a few indoor bikes, a rowing machine, and a StairMaster StepMill (ones in which actual stairs revolve like an escalator). There are no elliptical machines. There are are a number of weight machines, and dumb bells. The equipment overall looks to be adequate for someone who is interested to do some strength/weight training and cardio. The staff tells me that the Fitness Center does not see much activity. The few times we've been, we were the only people there. The major negative about the Center really are the hours. It is open everyday except Sunday, but on the days they are open, there are hours in the middle of the day when the Center is not open. This punctuated schedule can make arranging one's exercise schedule a bit off.

My husband and I swim here once or twice a week all fall and winter, and it's great. Best of all, it's rarely crowded or noisy so I can have a lane to myself and meditate or vegetate happily as I do my laps. The location is not super-convenient for me, but I don't mind going a bit out of my way for the pleasure of a good swim. It can be a little hard to find if you're not familiar with that neighborhood, but it's very much worth it.

The gym has 3 areas -- cardio, weights, and open space (we used it for sparring; could be used for stretching or yoga too), and wasn't crowded on either the weekend or weekday. The pool is pretty reasonably sized. And the clubhouse is quite large. Pretty cool that the neighboring lake is stocked. There's also a small dog park on site. I don't think we live close enough to make the most out of a membership; but Durhamites seeking a swimming pool should consider this.

The bees and bugs were very happy with all the flowers. :) The playground was great with a fun spin feature, web climbing area with slide, swings and more. There are also some outside basketball courts. There are several picnic tables, although we opted to just find a shady spot on the ground to set out a blanket for a picnic. We also noticed some permanent corn hole boards and horseshoe pits in front of the community center - but didn't inquire about getting the supplies for them.
