Nice surprise - before Christmas they open at 7.00 so I was over the threshold on the dot! The office has been smartened up since my last visit (in September) and the young lady behind the counter was cheerful, polite and happy to help me. At 7.00 am that's worth brownie points in my book. So a professional service in a clean smart environment. Yes, it can get crowded but the counter staff generally do their best under some pressure, especially at this time of year. I hope it continues to be as neat and tidy as it is now, as it's definitely more pleasant to wait for your letters/parcels etc.and I imagine for the staff too.

This one is particularly friendly and quaint. This is a classic little post office that sells precisely everything that you want it to. By no means as busy as the post office in the centre of town, this is a great one to pop into if you want to avoid the queues and spend your afternoon doing something productive instead. There is something British and charming about any post office, I think. In this age we live in swiftly moving towards a paperless society, then maybe one day these premises will, all around the country, become obsolete. Perhaps they'll just be empty brick shells that sell stamps to collectors and pencil sharpeners (although only artists would buy them). Balls of fluff will gather in the corners. But no! We cannot let this happen, we must support our local establishments. Without the postal system, how would housewives have affairs? How would charities give you free pens? We would all have boarded up little slots in our front doors. Support! Support! Support!!

Despite their surly attitude, this post office is always busy as it is in a good location in the west end shopping area of Park Crescent. As well as offering the usual post office services, this shop also sells cards and handbags. Yes, handbags! I give them full marks for initiative as no-one else on Park Crescent sells them so they have found a gap in the market. There are lots of parking spaces in the nearby side streets and there are regular buses serving this shopping area. Barry Railway Station is a 15 minute walk away.

I avoid the post office in the city centre for a variety of reasons, mainly because I don't want to…read morespend an hour waiting to mail one letter to the States. So I take all of my post to this charming little branch on Bute Street in Cardiff Bay, near Mermaid Quay. This post office has the friendliest and most helpful staff, and I often find myself spending a few extra minutes chatting to Nigel and his lovely team. It has a small-town feel to it, like a place I would've taken my post in the mid-1950s. Like most Royal Mail branches, it's best to avoid this post office between the hours of 11.30 and 1, as the lunch rush means the line nearly extends out the door. Just visit around 10 am or 3 pm and you'll often find nobody there. Another reason to stop by: the charming and sweet retro greeting card selection. Not retro-style, but actually from the 80s and 90s. I buy all of my cards here because they beat a Clintons creation any day of the week. You just have to see it. Trust me.
My undying memory of Castell Coch is being in the dungeon as an eight year old on school trip and…read morebeing pretty scared by a man dressed as knight! Since then it hasn't lost any of its magic. It's like the typical disney princess castle set high up on the hill over looking the city, complete with draw bridge, turrets and perfectly preserved rooms. This is of course a Faux castle. It's not even 100 years old, so don't expect too much history but ask about the original fortress of your interested. Its perfect for a day out as its only a 15 minute drive from the city centre and impossible to miss. Kids would love a day out here, and once your bored of the castle you take one of the many routes behind the castle that lead into the woodland where you can stop and have a picnic. Alternatively you can give the cafe a go and get some lovely cake. It only costs £3.60 for an adult to get in, and if you just fancy a walk its free. Personally I'm waiting for my knight in shining amour to come back and marry me in this fairy-tale castle (not that I could ever afford it!). NB. Opens later in the peak of summer, and closes earlier in the winter. It also closes completely in January for renovations.
This attraction is well worth a visit. If you pass Castle Coch on the M4 you might be fooled into…read morethinking that its fairytale tower is the tip of an iceberg which the surrounding woodlands are covering up. In fact, this castle is not as big as you may think it to be. Located on the northern outskirts of Cardiff it sits just above Tongwynlais, it is very easy to get to if travelling by car but you can also jump on a bus from Cardiff centre and take a short but picturesque walk up past the golf course and through the woods. The castle you see now was actually built on the ruins of a Norman period castle as a kind of weekend holiday home for the Marquis of Bute and his household. He wanted to make use of the site and funded this erection which enabled him to escape the bustle of Cardiff. If you have ever visited Cardiff castle then you will know what to expect from the interior design of the building as it follows similar taste. Once you cross the working draw bridge and pay a small entry fee you can get straight onto exploring the rooms which are amazingly well kept. The castle was designed so that the servants could come and go around the building without disturbing the guests as they tended to their needs. This means there are numerous nooks, crannies, and passageways to explore. As with Cardiff castle, there is an audio guide available which will offer you much information about the castle history. It wouldn't take you a whole day to take in everything but if you are not in a rush you might decide to take a break and visit the cafe which is situated in one of the rooms just opposite the entrance.

I like to use the post office at this time of year to purchase books of stamps, buy treats such as sweets etc for family members, and pay money/cheques into bank accounts. The Post Office staff are incredible at helping to service the needs of the Maesteg community with their efficient and timely help, dealing with customers` many requests. They are extremely kind and helpful, no matter how busy they are, and always provide service with a smile.
