It's a very small garage with a decent amount of business, but they are very helpful and will try and fit you in. I needed a pick up service once, which is something they don't offer - but they did say that if I didn't find somewhere which provided the service they would do their best to come and collect my car if I was stuck. It's very tough to find an honest mechanic isn't it? I know I've come across my fair share of…read moredishonest ones over the years. Finding out that someone has ripped you off completely can be a very stressful discovery. Say you go to a mechanic for an MOT and he fails your car and suggests £350 worth of work that needs doing. He then takes his £45 up front for the MOT test and "strongly suggests" that you get the work done at his Auto repairs shop. If you go somewhere else and get another quote or repairs, you can come back to get it retested without any additional MOT test costs. BUT, it's highly likely he/she might fail it again and suggest more repairs just out of bitterness. Eventually you find a mechanic who treats the car as his/her own and suggests cost effective ways of geting the job done with your circumstances in mind. For example there's no point you spending £90 on a wing mirror for a car you plan on part exchanging when you can get it repaired for £10. This is a family run garage with great friendly service. I spent a few hours at the here while they serviced/MOT'd it. Normally I do this to keep an eye on the job being done, keep them on their toes. You get it done quicker that way and they don't procrastinate. On this occasion though I found myself merrily chatting away and getting to know Yassar, Hamza and Ali. What a great bunch of young lads! The three were cousins and varied in terms of mechanical experiance, but the banter and enjoyment they got outta their work was inspirational. Whilst there, I also saw how people treat these mechanics when they come in for MOTs. I was frankly shocked by the obnoxious nature of some people who weren't very subtle in hiding their attempts at looking down on these highly skilled and knowledgable individuals. I began to see why so many mechanics are always moody and evasive. All of these revelations made me appreciate these guys even more. They were just happy to have a customer who actually asked them how their day was going. I shall be coming back here for my MOT from now on and reassured them that I'd spread the word. So there...I've done it.. So don't be put off by the secluded nature of this place, or the fact that it looks rundown and a bit grimey. The service is very good!

It's not often you encounter a business whose entire way of doing things is governed by…read moreword-of-mouth. Lidderdale Garage is that rare kind of place. Nestled in an alleyway running alongside a railway wall means it gets almost no real thoroughfare. I also seriously doubt it has been advertised anywhere, ever. However, since it's been in business for over fifty years, it must be doing something right. The original owner was a white-haired old chap called Tommy Hill who is mentioned in the memoirs of Stan Williams, a Dovedale Road schoolmate of John Lennon. Following Hill's death, the business became run by his son. It is a dark, old-fashioned kind of grease-shack that tunes up cars for a low fee. Independent businesses such as this bring together neighbourhoods. It may not have the vast customer lists of a big chain garage, but here's hoping it lasts another fifty years.

Gary at Lidderdale Garage is one of Wavertrees hidden gems. At least I think its a gem, the way the…read moresun bounces off that odd shaped head of his. His garage is equipped with all up to date, state of the art equipment, namely, a hammer, a crowbar, and even a set of no expense spared Aldi spanners. He is the most trustworthy mechanic I have ever known, always returning the nuts and bolts that are left over from every job, as he can't remember where they go, but wouldn't steal them from you. If you can find a real mechanic to tell you where they go, Gary is always happy to fit them for free. He has at least 10 Haynes manuals in his office, namely to cover up the stack of razzles and other jazz mags he keeps there, but that feat fades into oblivion, when he inevitably shares with you the fact that he has a library of 26 books at home. Yes, 26. Hes OK for those once a year visits, but if you go any more than that, he tries to befriend you by reciting poetry by Jim Morrison and John Donnnnnnn, even though it sticks out like a sore thumb the fact that he hasn't got a fucking clue what he's rambling on about. He only stops to regale you with tales of how he 'made it' and played guitar to a quarter of the worlds population in 1934. Regular customers have been known to take a 2 minute timer with them, as its the only chance you've got of making him stop. His dexterity inside an engine bay bears such magnificence, that it can only be born of a superhuman with an extra digit on each hand.
