Looking out to rolling hills, cows, deer, biplanes, and the storybook-like views you can only find in Switzerland is incredible. And the bed was comfortable. You cannot beat the location. Nestled at the entrance to the medieval city, staying here allows you to both easily walk anywhere in the city and park your car in their lot right by your rooms. No lugging your briefcase over cobblestones to get to your hotel in the medieval city, and no driving to get to the medieval city. And you aren't sacrificing any beautiful architecture staying here - it's a great building. The restaurant is so good! We had a lot of fun with the raclette, and the ice cream and meringue dessert was huge but super fun. If I ever came back to Gruyeres, I would definitely stay here again. We had a great time!

Note that all menus in Gruyeres are extremely identical so good customer service is a great way to set them apart. During our three visits we tried a variety of wines, Cafe Vienna, the beef broth soup, fondue, raclette, meringue and double cream, liqueur soaked cherries with ice cream and double cream and the salad. One dish that set this eatery apart was their version of the Brazilian pan de queso with gruyere stuffed in the center (perfection!). You'll notice that this restaurant takes over two buildings across the street from one another with patio seating as well as indoor (two levels). We really appreciated that they allowed us to share the one serving size of both the fondue and raclette (ordering two portions is not only too much food but pricey as well).

The check in and check out procedure is so personal. They sit you down and treat you as one on one. Unlike anything I have ever experienced. Upon checkout, they give you a small parting gift too. The dinner was fantastic albeit small portions but 8 courses! The cheese bar is out of this world with 20-30 different cheeses. You can also get cheese to go if you want. As much as you want. They have a neat little cigar bar with Cubans of course. The breakfast buffet in the morning was fantastic with plenty to eat. Oddly, we never got to the spa or pools but we did check them out. Next time... If there is a next time.

The town of Lenk is very small but oh so beautiful! Very fortunate the weather was clear and warm compared to the rest of my rainy and grey trip. It is a journey to get to the resort. I was coming from Salzburg which was about an 8hr journey. If you're coming from Zurich it's about 2.5 hrs and if you're coming from Bern it's about 1.5hrs, all by train. Long story short, since I was coming from Salzburg the journey took longer than expected and we didn't check in till about 21.30. We were so tired and hungry when checking in they could sense how exhausted we looked and they called the restaurant to see if they would stay open for us and they said yes! We immediately went to eat and the servers never rushed us and they treated us so well. I was very grateful they stayed open late for us. Tips/Comments: The website, at least for me, was very difficult to get information on what was included in my booking. Friends were the ones who told me about this place and I just mimicked the same packaged they got. So when we arrived I felt like such a cheapo asking if this and that was included b/c i just didn't know. So with the gourmet package dinner AND breakfast is included. Couldn't find a place on site to eat lunch except for in the Sauna they have this vegan broth that provided some substance. Also the contents in your mini fridge are included as well (thank god!). It was the first and only part of our trip where we had free water. Speaking of which, note that most of Europe's drinking water comes from Switzerland so drinking the water from tap is completely ok, even at the airport. When you're at the fancy dinner you can ask for free tap water as well. You also get a city card that lasts the duration of your stay. Highly recommend taking the lifts up to the top (about a 20minute ride) and the views are worth it. If you ever wonder why the town seems empty or quite it's because everyone is on that mountain hiking down. And let's not forget the sulphur pools and sauna. The pool is wonderful and just note that the Sauna's are nude. I get nude is totally an ok thing for Europeans but I'm sorry, my American-ness just couldn't strip down. They do provide a thin towel that I wore to cover up while i was in the sauna, just don't expect anyone else to do the same. Also, don't talk in the saunas. You will get scolded. Last but not least, if you decide to go into town and eat food off site its is VERY expensive. My lunch of a soup, salad, and coke was 38 swiss franks. 0_0

The breakfast is the same daily with some slight changes. I didn't mind that because I loved it! I wish that they offered a lunch or dinner buffet option. We ended up doing room service for dinner and it was quite pricey. We did enjoy the burgers that we order. I also like how the room cleaners would clean the rooms and refill the fridge everyday. The mini bar is free and they offer soda, water, and ice tea. We enjoyed the view and everything. I just think that the people who took photos for the resort or at the resort made it look better than what I experienced. I did really enjoy it, but it looked more amazing in pictures.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Frederick, who showed us to our rooms and gave us some recommendations for things to do over the weekend. Our room was fabulous-- we stayed in one of the panoramic view rooms. I will say that we spent very little time in our room as there were so many neat spaces to enjoy in the hotel. We spent quite a bit of time in the spa and in the pool, and if you are visiting, these are both a must-do while staying at the hotel. It was surprisingly quiet during our trip-- there were times when the pool was a busier but it was still enjoyable. Given the picturesque landscape, we were delighted not to be surrounded by people getting in the pool just to take "influencer" photos. The food was incredible. We dined in the restaurant on our first night which is when the black angus entrecôte and accompanying hollandaise stole our hearts. So much so that we cancelled our dinner reservations out in town for the second night to try other things on the menu. The ribs, the ribeye, the Aranchini, the mac, babaghanoush, the broccolini, the cheesecake... it was all so delicious. Straightforward flavors, fantastic food. Service provided by Vincenzo and Patrick was also wonderful. You can get a good drink anywhere, but it takes a special kind of hospitality to turn a drink into an experience. Bartender (and in our opinion, genius mixologist) of the Axe Bar, Phillip, made us a variety of experimental cocktails based on our tastes and it was an epic time. We came for one drink and ended up staying for quite a few. We truly enjoyed chatting with him, as well as the other bartenders Miguel and Kevin. My husband and I are the kind of people who usually end a trip early, because we'd always prefer to be home. This place made us wish we could stay another night, or even two. Good people, great food, fantastic drinks, and amazing views.

We stayed two nights along with another couple in two spacious king rooms that shared a large wraparound patio with soaring Mountain View's. From the moment we were met at the train station for the 2-minute drive to the property literally sparkling in the sunshine and walked inside we were pampered. It felt as if every employee from the hotel was there to greet us from bell and front desk to excellent concierge, Olivier, to the general manager of the hotel. Such a WARM welcome and this level of service continued uninterrupted throughout our oh too short stay. Our spacious rooms were exceedingly quiet and located a bit of a hike past the conference center in a more recent wing with modern hotel rooms and fantastic up to date bathrooms. Like most of the hotels in alpine Switzerland there was no AC but opening the windows at night provided plenty of cooling despite the unusually warm (80s) early September weather. A sumptuous breakfast was included in our room rate that featured all the usual items plus a great à la carte options. We were a bit sad to leave after two nights but will plan to return at some future date for more pampering and to spend more time in the deluxe spa and indoor pool complex. Highly recommended.

Parking: Now the main entrance to this hotel is located inside a pedestrian only street within the medieval village. It's a beautiful location! Now because it's location parking can be fun. They have 3 lots you can choose from. P1 is the closest and about a 5 minute walk up a small hill. P2 is the next closest where you will have about 100 stairs and a small hill. P3 is located the furthest and will be a hike from the bottom of the hill for about a 7-10 minute walk. No matter where you park there will be a hill and you will need to carry you luggage up it. Now with that being said, it's not a hard hike up those hills and they have benches to relax on. The views are unreal here so if you need a break, just pause and enjoy the views. Parking is $10 and the hotel front desk will provide you a parking pass for your car. Checking in: The front desk for this hotel is tucked away in a corner and it's wonderful! Smack…read moredab in the middle of Gruyère, it probably gets all of its traffic from walk-ins that haven't done their research. Just check Trip Advisor and you'll see all the terrible reviews for the hotel and the restaurant. The service is terrible. I was told I can sit outside by a bartender. I sat around for 10 minutes waiting for someone to bring me a menu. I even asked for one, and at that point the server didn't even answer me, she just got the owner to talk to me. He tells me the table is for 4 people and I can't sit there. All of the tables in the restaurant are for 4 people. He points to one of those tables that seat 4 and told me to sit there. I said "but that's also a table for 4, why can't I sit here?" And he says "I'm the owner and this is my restaurant and I'm telling you you can't sit here." Wow, rude. He might as well have been swinging from the trees and beating on his chest. Great logic there; I can see that logic isn't his strong suit, and he gets his way using "because I'm the owner and this is my restaurant and I said so." I'm guessing he didn't want me to sit there because it was close to a good view and maybe he wanted to save it for a larger group. It wasn't even that good, it was the table with the closed window so the view was obstructed. That seemed like the perfect time to leave. I went to Cafe Restaurant des Remparts nearby where they also have a panoramic view, but the service is way friendlier. Glad I didn't stay at St-George of the Jungle's restaurant! His wait staff looked miserable. If that's how the owner treats customers ready to buy an overpriced fondu pot, I can't imagine how he treats his staff. By the looks on their faces, not very well. The washrooms are also disgusting. Small and stinky. Not good ventilation. The air is damp. You can smell everything that happened before you got in there, which isn't exactly the most appetizing. I would definitely avoid. There are better hotels to stay in in a more livable city like Lausanne. La Gruyère is awesome to spend a half day in, see the castle, eat and drink, and learn how they make cheese, but I wouldn't overnight there, but if you do want to overnight in Gruyère, I would say do not go to this restaurant's hotel. It's a 3-star that's overpriced due to its convenient location. Just go to Lausanne, it's close enough.
