I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, 3 for the lack of service and how slow it was, 4 for the fish n…read morechips. We visited on a cold windy spring day where you couldn't see the sea for fog and it was a relief to get inside into warmth. The restaurant was busy but luckily they showed us to a table straightaway. Cute decor with painted walls and plain tables, which were set too closely together so it was difficult to pull out a seat to sit without disturbing those behind you. Menu was good, but expensive, and service slower than a drunk tortoise. We waited quite a while for our order to be taken, then they came back 10 mins later as they forgot it, then 10 mins later they tried to serve us someone else's order. It took a good 30 mins for our lunch to arrive so we were left hungry, looking at others eat during that time. The fish and chips was good, big serving but boney, too much batter for my taste, and the chips were a little soft. However we were hungry! The curry sauce was OK, a little powdery, but again we were hungry! We waited 10 mins to pay and ended up going and finding a member of staff so we could pay and be on our way. It is busy, it is right on the seafront, with a view if not foggy, so I guess you pay extra for that, but I don't think it is somewhere I would return to.

Some of us had enjoyed the fish & chips downstairs, this was the first time upstairs. The decor is simple, the view over the sea great, the service friendly and the food excellent. Scallops, tempura prawns and a Thai green bisque/crab cake as starters followed by lobster and plaice as mains and a maple & pecan cheesecake as dessert. A very nice meal indeed.

I'm not generally a big fan of fish and chips, but this place has restored my faith in how good it can be when it all goes right.

OK sadly I'm going to have to edit my review. For years and years and years Mary Jane's has been…read morethe best fish shop ever (see below for why) but I visited it a couple of times in August this year and was really disappointed as the quality of the food has gown downhill hugely. The fish was dry and the batter was fairly tasteless, nd the chips, while okay, were nothing more. Service was slow too, though they were very buy (as always). I'll no doubt go to Mary Jane's again some time and hopefully will find it was just having n off day, but for now I'm going to have to downgrade my rating to merely average. Previously on Qype.com ... Best. Chip Shop. Ever. Quite simply the best chippie I've ever been too - I first sampled Mary Jane's about 30 years ago on holiday, and I still go there pretty much every year now. Mary Jane's is legendary in Cromer - that's why there's always a queue outside this chippie and not the one opposite! Expect to queue for takeaway - but the queue is fast moving, they take your order, then you wait at the back of the shop while it's cooked. That way they can get through a busy queue quickly. Haddock is especially good but they also do cod, rock and skate as well as a load of other things. Chips are just superb. The restaurant is also very good, the same quality fish and chips plus other meals including scampi, pizza, pie etc. It gets very busy and you may well have to wait in the evenings. The restaurant has a licence so you can sup a beer alongside your fish but better still, go for the lime milkshake - sublime!
