They've painted this a garish pink since many of the photos online were taken, which has the pub in a far more professional looking white. Let's start with the positive: inside, this place is really pretty. The layout allows for lots of little nooks and crannies, with the restaurant seating towards the back after a small but functional pub. Exposed brickwork and beams lend the venue a classy feel. The service was attentive and friendly and food came out quickly. Dishes seemed reasonably priced with a 10oz sirloin steak topping the menu at £18. Unfortunately, there's less positive news to report. Firstly, drinks are not offered as part of the table service. Neither are guests provided with a drinks menu or wine list (despite many being available behind the bar). Instead, guests are required to get up, go to the bar, order their own drinks and carry them to the table. That's despite our table being laid out with wine glasses (and glasses for water we were never offered or provided). The menu itself is extensive enough, however half way through our dinner we spotted a promotion for a dish that wasn't included. It turned out to be included on a specials list we weren't provided with but was scrawled on a specials board out of sight to more or less every table. Talking of the table, ours was sticky and needed a good wash. Once we ordered our starters we were actually asked if we would like clean cutlery for the next course. That's a first. The food itself was inadequate. Our steak was over cooked (medium rare was closer to well done) and the chicken coach tasted dry and I strongly suspected had been cooked from frozen. We left feeling this venue has bags of potential. It's appointed well but everything from our entrance went downhill (with the exception of a couple of delicious deserts). It needn't be that way. If they changed their silly drinks policy, provided a full menu, washed down the tables, gave a little more care to the food and generally extended the quality of the building to the experience of their guests, this would be at least a four star place to spend time.

The waterfalls are amazing and the damp drippy green valley a wonder to walk along. There are pools which are fun to play in in summer. Sgwd Gwladys (Gwladys' waterfall) is about a kilometer from the car park I believe. There is a pub, and there are clean public toilets near the car park. Take sturdy boots if walking in winter as the path can be muddy. Not suitable for wheelchairs.

The best place to start the walk is next to the Angel Inn at Pontneddfechan where there is a rocky path which leads you through the woods alongside the River Nedd Fechan. You will need to allow a good hour in both directions and the path is uneven and even dangerous when wet and slippery, so not suitable for everyone (there are several warning signs) and sturdy shoes are a must. You pass an old mill and the entrance to a disused silica mine. Further along, the Nedd Fechan and Pyrddin meet and the path now borders the Pyrddin. The first waterfall to see is the Sgwd Gwladys, a lovely sight. It's possible to climb behind the falls as well though I haven't done this myself! Further along you'll come to more waterfalls including the Horseshoe Falls and the Lower and Upper Ddwli Falls. There are lovely views everywhere of the falls and trees overhanging the river. Well worth a visit.

Good comfortable inn on the edge of a small village in the eastern part of the National Park,…read moreconvenient for both the Black Mountains and the main peaks of the Brecon Beacons. The hotel has 10 ensuite bedrooms. We found the rooms clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious but perhaps in need of a little updating. There is not T.V. lounge or rooms solely for the use of hotel guests. However, this is perhaps compensated by a large and comfortable lounge bar. A large T.V. is at one end but this area is seperated off and thus is unobtrusive to those located in the main area. Rev. James and Hancocks H.B. on draft are the pick of the beers. Choice of lagers, wines etc also available. There is also a garden at the back of the hotel for warm and sunny weather. We booked in at the hotel on a half board basis for a whole week and during that time never had a disappointing meal. Good choice of food ranging from local sausages, salmon, half roast duck, crevettes and various steaks. Portions are generous to the point that you may wish to consider a 2 course meal instead of the normal three courses. The fixed price lunchtime menu is excellent value. If available, try the salmon with saffron sauce and Bacardi and Blueberry cheesecake. The website has sample menus. We found the staff friendly and efficient and would happily recommend this inn/hotel to others seeking a reasonably priced establishment in one of the most attractive parts of Wales.

The Angel Hotel is a former Georgian coaching-inn, now rated three AA stars. It has 32 en-suite guest rooms, plus a Lodge at nearby Abergavenny Castle. The restaurant has an AA rosette, with an award-winning wine list. The Foxhunter Bar has an open fire, original wood panelling from the early 1900's, and interesting old paintings of Abergavenny. There's a good range of beers like The Reverend James and London Pride, plus guest beers, and a half-dozen wines by the glass. Special mention must be made of their superb Afternoon Teas, with scones, cakes and pastries, served from 3.00 - 5.30pm, with is proper bone china and linen. For £6.00 you may have tea or coffee with a small selection of cakes, or freshly-baked scones with jam and cream. For £9.80 you get the pastries plus a selection of sandwiches:Black Mountain smoked salmon, Marinated cucumber and cream cheese, Home-cooked ham, and Egg mayonnaise with cress. Weighing in at £14.80 is the Champagne Tea: copious amounts of all the above plus champagne. The Angel has been awarded membership of the prestigious UK Tea Guild and for 2008 an 'Award of Excellence'. The Angel is one of only six hotels outside of London to have achieved this accolade. The Tea Menu runs to about 6 pages and is a really good read, describing with great affection the wide choice of leaf teas available. The hotel claims currently to be refurbishing their bedrooms. If you intend to stay there, make absolutely certain you ask for, and get, a refurbished room, because the older ones are shabby and unkempt. And the restaurant? Some seriously good food, much of it sourced locally. For Lunch expect £20 per head, Dinner double it; plus wine, from an excellent list containing several by the glass and half-a-dozen half-bottles. The room is L-shaped and the staff, whenever I wanted them, always seemed to be 'round the corner' out of view; and I counted SEVEN of them. Perhaps they were expecting a big lunchtime, but it didn't materialise. They reminded me of the proverbial London Buses - you wait for ages and then 2 or 3 came round the corner simultaneously. But no real complaints - better to have than not to have!

Anyway i'm not a fan, i went with once and thought it was filled with pretentious idiots who talk to loudly, eat too fast and behave like well, idiots. Now, to me, it's as if the Angel is desperately trying to be something it's not, much like Abergavenny itself. I'm told the rooms are lovely but expensive. I'm told the food is lovely, but expensive, I'm told the place is lovely, but...you guessed it, expensive! So, you can imagine my surprise when i found out everything was not lovely but still expensive. Right on the corner of the High Street The Angel isn't even that pretty. I'm aware many people take their vows down here and i had a sneaky peak at the wedding prices and be Jesus! it's probably cheaper and more fun to fly your whole wedding party (vicar and all) to Vegas than it is to get married here. All in all for people who like to think their posh. Not moi!
