we set out to hike parc du mont royal, one of montreal's most iconic green spaces and a beloved…read moreescape from the city. designed in the 1870s by landscape architect frederick law olmsted, who also designed new york's central park, the park covers a large portion of mount royal and offers walking trails, viewpoints, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature right in the heart of montreal. thinking it would be a straightforward hour and five minute trek, we quickly learned that our timeline was a little optimistic. naturally, the hike turned into a much longer adventure with plenty of pit stops along the way. before tackling the climb, we wandered through the area, stopping at mngo, decathlon, a k-beauty store, and even a museum before finally making our way up the mountain. by the time we started the hike, we had already turned it into a full day of exploring. the trail itself was well maintained, with a mix of shaded pathways and plenty of stairs to keep things interesting. the overcast sky made the climb much more manageable, although it was still quite the workout. between the greenery, the incline, and the steady stream of steps, there were definitely moments when the beads of sweat and the sunscreen threatening to run into my eye, reminded me that this was more than just a casual stroll. the grounds were clean and well cared for, with shaded sections that offered welcome breaks along the way. after the climb, we were rewarded with a panoramic view of montreal from the belvédère lookout, where the city skyline stretches out below. it's one of those views that makes you forget about tired legs for a moment. on the way down, we stumbled across the towering cross, one of mont royal's most recognizable landmarks, and decided to take a quieter, less travelled path. the change of scenery was worth it, and we even spotted a little chipmunk along the way, a perfect reminder that we were surrounded by nature despite being right in the middle of the city. with fresh air, lush greenery, and just enough challenge to feel accomplished, the hike up parc du mont royal was a memorable part of our montreal adventure. just remember to bring water, sunscreen, and be prepared for a few more steps than you might expect.

Montreal's Central Park The View…read more I've visited twice. Once at night for the city light view from the Chalet terrace about a decade ago. This time (2026) for the day views and visits to the Cross and to the Lake. When I came about 10 years ago at night time, the crowd was much lighter and chill. Also, I saw an owl sitting on the tree along the walking path! Today's visit on a late summer holiday weekday, it was super crowded with locals, cyclists going up the Mont, joggers and tourists. Parking was tight as were trails to 3 major sites on Mont Royal. The Cross was rather disappointing as the trail was a gravelly loop apx 1.6km without a reward vista. Also the hiking trails of the main road were riddled with poison ivy :/. The Chalet was open (unlike my earlier night visit)! Inside were a coffee shop, a gift shop, bathrooms and a big room with a lodge style ceiling. The viewing terrace was super packed with people though everyone was accommodating with photo opportunities. The view was nice with the buildings and bridges. Drastically different than the sparkling lights at night! Tried to go to the Lake but couldn't get a paid parking spot. And after 3 loops, I passed after hearing it's rather dirty with some ducks. Perhaps bc it was a holiday weekend, this Labor Day, Monday was crowded and the cyclists moved faster than cars. I would NOT repeat the day visit unless it's for exercises. The Cross IMO isn't worth it and the Lake parking is too much of a bother. The night views of Montreal from the Chalet terrace on a clear night beats everything I've experienced today.

There was some Shakespeare in the Park but so many other loud areas with people doing all kinds of crazy stuff, sports, kids screaming, loud adult arguments, even old school ghetto blasters, lol. We were visiting family and they suggested that we spend a little time here for our niece to do…read moresome sledding. So of course we go cause why not? There's a large parking lot but it seemed quite full when we went but we found a relatively close/mid spot to where we were going to be. There were roughly 2 large hills where a lot of families were sledding down. We went to the smaller hill as the niece was going to try out her new snowboard! It was really cute as it's like a super bunny slope which if you're just learning, is perfect and it's free! After we did a little sledding, we took the same sled and walked around the park area as there are many trails into the woods and around the lake. It was quite pretty and really serene. I wonder how it would look like not covered in snow. But it was quite nice to be able to walk around outside where it wasn't super crowded and just explore. We saw others snowshoeing as well as cross country skiing. Definitely a place to check out if you want to do something in the outdoors as well as just walk around as it's so big that it'll give you lots of time to just get lost. Hopefully not too lost!

The riverside parks and Verdun and LaSalle have been packed solid the past few days because of the warm weather. Runners, joggers, bikers, strollers, families doing BBQ and picnics, kids, couples, guys hanging out downing a couple of brewskis together, they've all been here in droves. I've seen very, very few people keeping the social distance rules or wearing the required masks. I don't think people seem to understand the gravity of this pandemic and are just treating the warm days as some kind of vacation holiday. I don't mean to be a killjoy but Quebec is the epicentre of the Canadian pandemic. Think about it, People.

The Long Version: Bonaventure Park is a funky urban park that is in the space that separates northbound from southbound traffic along Robert-Bourassa Blvd. It starts at Notre Dame St. ends at Wellington St. There are multiple cool sculptures and art installations along the long linear park. There's also a children's playground, some ping-pong tables, some exercise structures for circuit training, picnic tables, lounge chairs and benches. It's funny that even though there is literally high-ish speed traffic along either side of this park, it seems peaceful in the park and feels like a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There are these structures towards the northern part of the park where you can walk up the stairs and see the city higher up, like lookout points of sorts. I'm not really sure when this was built but I don't think it was there when I lived in Montreal in the 2000s, but I could be wrong. I first noticed the amazing structures which looked like trees, you can climb on them and get a different perspective of the neighborhood. Then as I kept on walking along the long path, I've noticed the play area for kids as well as a few coworkers (I guess) enjoying a game of ping pong on the permanent tables, there's also a trek fit space for outdoor training, lounge chairs as well as picnic tables and at the end, the amazing sculpture, Source, which was created for Montréal's 375th anniversary. Although I enjoyed my walk, I must say that as this park is replacing a former expressway, I could not avoid the car waltz and all that it implies, moreover, the trees of the Promenade Bonaventure being very young, it was impossible to find a point of shade by this sunny day.

The pond, the small waterfall, the cobble-stone paths, the library (now over 100 years old), the green spaces, the variety of huge, mature trees which give plenty of shade, you can easily pick up lunch on the go on Sherbrooke street and come over and spend an afternoon here spread out on a blanket, either chilling out with a great friend or a great book. There's also a great dog part which will allow you to see some very interesting breeds since this is Westmount after all.

This park went through some renovations recently and it seems like there is more art, more fountains, more flower beds, and more places to sit, all of which is lovely. The park sits in front of a beautiful Montreal church and is just a short walk from a little strip of cute clothing and houseware shops on St Laurent, and fresh bagels and delicious gelato on Fairmount, so it's a perfect spot for a break from walking around. In the winter there is usually an installation in the middle with Christmas trees for sale, a small stage with live folk music, and a roaring fire. Which is my favourite.

I decided to come for a picnic and didn't want to get stuck fighting for picnic tables in every other packed park. This place was just right, quiet and you have a great view from the bleacher. There's a few entrances to the park, I however came by the street and came down a little flight of cement stairs that lead us to a huge well maintained soccer field. There's 3 sets of bleachers 2-4 benches around the field as well as 2 benches under a gazebo. There's a water fountain to drink from right beside the gazebo as well as a huge deck area that has a look out of the rest of the park. At the look out you will notice a dog park to your left and a tennis court to the right there's stairs on either sides of the building to bring you to them.

Set on a large sweeping hill with beautiful views of the city, it is a delightful setting for a picnic or just a quiet place to stretch out with a book. A friend told me it was modelled on the Primrose Hill park in London but I don't know if that's just urban myth. On the east side of the park about halfway up there is a nice playground for kids, and a bit further up near the top there is a small wading pool in the summer. There is also a dog park, tennis courts and soccer field at the top of the park. In winter, it's a great spot to take the little ones sledding.
