My wife thought he was going to run her over when she was looking for her ball on number !5. Is getting the work done more important than giving way to the paying customer? Also, you get surprised sometimes when they are spraying the course with chemicals and the sprayer is right in front of you leaving a wet green with chemical on it for you to play. Better communication needs to happen between proshop and players about when they are spraying. In fact, I recommend they close course on Monday mornings to spray and never spray course when golfers are playing for the safety of golfers.

I've been golfing for several years and always take a few lessons a year to help get me off on the right foot and stay consistent each season. I called around and found a true diamond in the rough. The head golf pro, Matt, gave me a great lesson at a very good price for a private country club. (You don't need to be a member to take lessons) For those of you new to golf, lessons can be discouraging. You basically have someone telling you that you're doing about 20 things wrong and even when you fix 1 thing you're still doing 19 wrong so you don't always see immediate improvement. Matt kept things very smooth and never once made me feel like I didn't belong as a non-member. He keeps his instruction simple and doesn't incorporate too many changes all at once. In fact, during the course of our 1 hour session he made 3 changes to my swing (stance, hands, release) but did it in a way that didn't overwhelm me with multiple new ideas. Each idea built on the last so there was continuity and thought in each step. Also, his visual aids are simple and easy to understand (I once had a pro in NJ put me in a piece of cardboard with a hole in the middle to understand swing planes...). My final thought is that the lessons are on the full grass driving range which, for me, is a huge plus over a crappy old golf mat. Hitting on grass gives a much more realistic approach than hitting on mats.

Folks are friendly and the neighborhood is great. (Full disclosure: my parents live in the Lakes and my dad golfs regularly.) Blossoms is the latest incarnation of the Magnolia Greens golf course clubhouse restaurant. I first reviewed it back in 2011, when it was called Magnolia Grill. While the interior may have been updated in the intervening years, the boxy space is the same. You definitely get a "golf course clubhouse restaurant" vibe here, and I assume patrons are primarily from the neighborhood, or golfers. It's a friendly place to gather and eat before or after a round of golf. Destination dining, it is not. Breakfast and lunch menus are available, and it's your basic golf course clubhouse food. A selection of salads and sandwiches at lunch, and all the breakfast basics earlier in the day. There are few gluten free options, but I was able to enjoy the Blossoms salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette. (I heard on good authority this salad is a favorite of the ladies' golf group.) It's a large portion, and leftovers kept well for another meal the following day. My husband opted for the cheeseburger and fries, which he deemed below average. "Two star, tasted like meatloaf." The all-beef hot dog plate that wandered by our table looked good, and may be an option for me on a return visit, sans bun. Informal surveys of the regulars seem to indicate that breakfast is the best meal served at Blossoms. So get there early and fill up before hitting the links.

Having read the poor reviews from years past I felt I had to report on what playing this course is like from the 2025 perspective, here's what I observed today: A staff that goes the extra mile to ensure your Star Hill experience met standard, your standards. Professional, friendly, well managed pro shop. The course was in great shape, none of the issues addressed in previous posts, well maintained fairways and greens. The tee boxes are scaled to meet the needs of all, from the scratch player to the hacker. But there is something else that was taking place at this golf club, something that I have never before witnessed at any course, all over the world, at any time: Community! As we made the turn, there was a group of about 20 men, obviously a mens league, about to tee off on the first tee box. These men genuinely enjoyed each others company and were looking forward to a great time. Left an impression, but here was the clincher: As we were heading down the 18th fairway towards the clubhouse, we could see the driving range; it was packed with high school age kid. As we finished our ro and proceeded to the parking lot, it was full of players from all age groups, young and old, male and female, and they were having so much fun. We saw young kids pushing their carts with moms and dads. The high schoolers were heading to their designated tee boxes for some sort of competition. Seniors were organizing for something on the course. Congratulations Star Hill! There are golf clubs out there that boast of many things, but you, you have what every course dreams of; you have community. That can only be attributed to one thing: a well managed organization. I'm sure I only scratched the surface.
