For tapas, we figured that was no problem -- and it was no problem. The staff -- all young and seeming to have a good time together -- was friendly and efficient. The food was outstanding, on par with our favorite tapas place in Barcelona. Padron peppers perfeectly blistered and seasoned; patatas bravas crisp and hot; grilled scallop done just right and resting on garlic/oil/parsley -- too simple to be called a sauce but perfect with the scallop. We had five dishes in all, and were pleasantly surprised by each, and asked our server, Joe -- cheerful and charming -- if we had missed anything he would highly recommend. He paused briefly, and then suggested the sizzling prawns; he was spot on, they were sweet and succulent and set off wonderfully by the hint of heat in the oil. A memorable dinner from start to finish, all in 65 minutes. Bravo, Salt House Tapas!

I'm from California & live in Toronto, Canada - you can tell Californians because when we live other places we whine about not getting a good burrito. Yes, but I'm in Chester - I wasn't expecting anything or trying to emulate 'home' - we were just walking by & a bit hungry so we popped in thinking it'd be kitschy & cool. Wow. Srsly. The food is a mixture of cuban, spanish, mexican, brazilian, etc. I had a burrito. I would actually rate the burrito a bit better than most of what passes in Toronto. The service was awesome, even tho I hadnn't quite tuned my 'English' ears yet (was needing translation). However the margarita was world-freakin-class. I was expecting some sort of margarita mix/tequila mixture, but it honestly tasted like fresh lime and tequila - like an authentic margarita. It - was- awesome. I doubt I'll have many chances to visit Chester again, but if I do, I'm totally hunting down this place. For expats who might be in the area: check this out for your burrito fix! Wait, now I want to visit Chester again soon and get all around their menu. nom nom nom

There are also non-alcoholic cocktails like Raspberry Ripple too, I plumped for an interestingly titled cocktail called 'Dave'. They all come in fancy glasses so you can do your best Del-Boy impression with the parasols and cherries! They are not cheap though at £5+ for some, so perhaps a place to visit for one round only. There is also a dance-floor in the centre of a good size, which I'm sure was packed later in the evening. Fiesta Havana also does food too, but although we enquired the wait time was too long, by virtue of its popularity. The dishes that came past us looked tasty and were predominantly tapas.

Named after the liquor which gin evolved from, it's a contemporary gin bar and cafe, with over 50 types of gin. It's easy to find and very much in the heart of Hope Street, so an easy stop if you're in the area. What struck us at first was just how bright it felt - after spending so long hanging around in what most people would refer to as dive bars, this took us by surprise! Although this did lend itself to the contemporary feel, it didn't feel especially welcoming. We managed to grab a spot on the sofa at the edge of the room after a small wait at the bar. It's worth noting that this is not a large area, so prepare to be standing or move very quickly when you see someone leave... The bar is also very small, with only two people service, so it did feel like an effort to get anyone's attention. The gin menu is very extensive, with a small description for each option. We were happy to spot a family favourite in Adnam's, so the other half had this with tonic, and I went for a bramble cocktail. It was very tasty and not too sweet, with just the right amount of blackberry. Food is available in the form of tapas, which looked good, but it was hard to decide whether they were focusing on the food or the gin more. The extensive gin list obviously says the latter, but the predominantly table seating says otherwise.

I had their version of a French 75 and it was one of the best I've had anywhere. I also ordered some of their tapas, and they were excellent. I was also extremely impressed by the service--Liverpool is such a friendly town and the wait staff didn't disappoint. They saw that I was alone and didn't hover too much, but when they realized I wanted to chat, they were extremely welcoming. There was lots of good advice about gin--and also about the city.

It's family-run - Spanish family-run in fact, with the patriarch at the helm cooking in the kitchen and his lady offering greetings front of house whole the kids all muck in with the service, and they've obviously been well schooled because the service is absolutely fab. The ingredients used in the dishes taste deliciously fresh, and while I can only speak for the seafood and fish the other members of my party raved about the chicken, pork and beef, and there was plenty of choice for veggies as there should be in a tapas selection (think patatas bravas, Spanish tortilla, garlic mushrooms and soforth). If you're needing something more substantial than picky bits then I'd heartily recommend the paella to share between two, as there'll be enough for your friends to dive into as well. There's so much choice so small portions are perfect for sampling everything. Be wary if you're bringing a car as the area around the restaurant is pedestrianised so you might find yourself having a hefty walk to the nearest car park!

It reminded me very much of a great tapas restaurant in Manchester called El Rincon - equally awesome. Seafood is a speciality and La Casa Vieja has a reputation for quality seafood and meat paellas. There is a specials board, so the menu does change a little each day. I was pleased to find on the a la carte and tapas menu that the dishes are a little bit different and there aren't all of the usuals that I would suspect to find. Pudding wise, maybe have a try of the Spanish bread pudding!
