I normally wait two visits to review local places but my experience tonight was so negative that I am unlikely to ever go back to Papu.
I live a few minutes walk away and have been wanting to try it for ages since it looks very cute; with a sandwich board in front of the door advertising in Polish and English. The website lists a nice selection of Polish food, pizzas, and a couple of other things like the English Breakfast. The website is well put together with a menu in both Polish and English.
Tonight I talked my husband into trying it out and we headed over at about 6:40, we sat down and started looking at the menu and the woman behind the counter brought over a second menu when she saw me looking around. After a couple of minutes we asked about the soup of the day and she had a man come out from the back who had better English, he told us the soup was cabbage and vegetables and the daily special was a nice sounding devilled egg and ground beef dish (possibly, I ordered it because I like trying new things).
We got coffee and tea and chatted away while waiting for our food. The only other patron finished his meal and left. The woman started moping, which was a bit weird since the website states the closing time as 11pm (the door says 10pm) every night. Another ten minutes passed and she came by and cleared my husband's cup which had been sitting empty as we continued to wait.
Finally at 7:15 she came up and dropped a bill for the drinks on the table. Seeing our confusion she basically told us repeatedly that they were closed.
So after giving us dinner menus, talking about the specials, letting us order, and then letting us sit there like idiots for 30-40 minutes, Papu closed their doors between three to four hours early.
Luckily Quality Kebab down the street is always fast and friendly because we were starving by this point. read more
