Once again, the Yelp reviews helped me find a restaurant we will certainly return to in the future. It was a Friday night. The large gravel parking lot was about half full. The building, overlooking Lake Pokegama, looked like many other up north bars. Walking in, I really wasn't sure if we were in the right place. Happily, we were. My dining partner and I sat at the bar. We were greeted right away by the bartenders and asked for our drink orders. The drinks had a great pour and were affordable. We were asked if we wanted to eat and promptly received menus. The menu had a lot of stuff. Appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, pizza and fish. Having read reviews I was leaning toward the beef sandwich, while my dining partner wanted pizza. When the bartender said those were her favorite menu items, we decided to get one of each to split among us. Good choice! The sandwich was packed with meat and cheese. I could have drank the au jus; it was so good. While it was $22 (with fries), it would have been a big sandwich for most people to finish. The pizza was fantastic. The only pizza I enjoyed more was from a place in Nashville. The crust was top notch. The toppings were generous and prepared well. My dining partner and I are big eaters; we still had four (4) big pieces left at the end of our meal (it was great cold). It wasn't nice enough to sit outside on their large patio during our visit. We plan on returning here frequently in the future and will give it a try (weather permitting).

This must be an upper Wisconsin thing because this is only the second time I've seen this combination on a menu, and the other time was also in another upper Wisconsin town many years ago. The breading was crispy and the cheese was melted. The fries on the other hand were okay at best. A little limp and greasy for our tastes... decent flavor, but it the texture was off. I recently hosted a Bachelorette party at my cabin and brought the group of girls to the Local. The owner, Mike, did everything he could to make it a special night for us - even giving us a microphone and letting us belt our hearts out to all our favorite music we were playing on the juke box. The only bummer is they don't have a kitchen. They do have a food truck on certain nights (check their Facebook page) and also a variety of frozen pizzas. Great place!

The bartender was friendly and served us a "yellow" flavored jello shots. The price was right as the drinks do not cost much, but the place could have used a once over. They had a band the night before and they hadn't quite cleaned up after, in fact the ladies from the night before were not too "lady like" (not my words, theirs). The two stars: 1 is for the excellent popcorn. 1/2 is for being a true dive bar and the other half is for having the quarter game.

It's got something for everyone: pull tabs, claw machines to keep the kids entertained, and a classic Friday night fish fry that hits the spot. The kids' menu is solid too, with plenty of choices to keep little ones happy. The staff is warm and welcoming, and if you're lucky enough to get Deb as your waitress, count yourself blessed. She's elite -- attentive, friendly, and just downright excellent. With Deb taking care of you, it's almost impossible to have a bad time here. A couple of things to note: while they do accept cards, you're better off paying cash to avoid the extra fees -- not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. I am knocking off a star, though, for one disappointing change: no more free refills on pop. Really? The glasses aren't that big, and anyone who knows the cost of fountain soda knows it's minimal. Also, I was given 1 cup of tartar sauce for the fish and the 2nd cup I asked for? I was charged for that too. It just feels a bit stingy.
