Great place to get Mexican food in Hattiesburg. I got the chicken fajitas quesadilla which came with a choice of rice/beans or salad. It also comes with chips and salsa. The quesadilla was large and flavorful. While it was delicious, I wish the quesadilla was a bit more crispy and much of it was mushy. I wish there was more cheese as well. Located in a slower spot. Hidden in the back of the plaza. This place isn't too busy and the service was good. The food was delicious as well. The carnitas (pork) was our favorite. It was so soft and flavorful. The steak tacos were great as well. The steak had a nice char to it. Did not like the tamales too much. They put too much sauce on it which overpowered the meat flavor and it was kind of tangy. We were surprised at how much our bill was. Definitely above averagely priced. read more

sometimes the food is very good, sometimes it leaves you questioning their thought process as to why what you were served is acceptable. if you want consistently good food try Rio Grande because you are rolling the dice when you order at papitos. it's a gamble. My husband and I stopped in for some drink and ordered some margaritas, chips and queso, and a couple of shots... as I'm sipping my margarita, I noticed something was floating around in my glass, and when I took a closer look it was a small roach. Third time reviewing this place and still just as happy! This is hands down my fav Mexican joint in the burg! I've tried a few of the others and always walked away disappointed. Some places do have better chips and salsa, I will say that. But papitos always wins when it comes to quality and quantity and service. I will continue to establish this place! The restaurant is large and has an outside patio too. The menu is large and they have lunch specials. I had the chicken fajita quesadilla. My husband had another chicken dish. Both lunches were large servings. They were some of the best Mexican food we have had for a while. We come from an area with tons of different genres of Mexican food so we have high standards. The little boy who answered the phone when I placed my order about thirty minutes ago should be FIRED. I asked him a question about the menu and he didn't know the answer so he would ask the guy next to him and I could literally hear him cursing. Then when he finally came back to the phone he was mouthy. After I got my total I asked him to repeat my order because it seemed too high. So I asked him to make the large queso a small and I said the price was a little high for me. He came back with a smart ass "it's the prices" so I told him he was mouthy and I'd be talking to the manager when I come in to get my food and he said "well too bad the manager ain't in" I said well I guess I'll have to come back when he or she is huh. Three stars... usually I have a very good experience here. The food is always hot, fresh, & a lot for your money... but then again, I always in most cases get it to go. The last time I went here I decided to sit inside...me and a friend walked in and was greeted by the host immediately. We sat down and we're given menus and quickly was served chips & salsa...for about 5mins we waited on a waitress/waiter while others around us got served/orders taken and dismissed. The one waitresses who was assisting everyone in the area looked at us and said someone would be with us shortly by this time 10mins went by. She then continued with everyone around us and went to the bar and loudly said Angel I'm not getting them because that's not one of my table to wait on. It shouldn't have mattered who table it was customer service should have been priority. After hearing this we got up and started walking out. She then stopped us to ask if we wanted her to wait our table. This is the worst Mexican restaurant I ya Ave ever been too. The service is terrible - the wait stafF is so rude - and they're constantly out of random things. Every time I've been they were out of something, and not just certain dishes. Once they were out of all alcohol except beer and wine. Another time they were out of salsa. Food is normally great, as well as service, but last night our waitress "Bri" messed up one of our orders (shrimp fajita quesadilla), she brought out a chicken quesadilla and was extremely rude about us telling her that's not what was ordered, extremely politely might I add. She then proceeded to still bring out the wrong thing again, a shrimp quesadilla instead of fajita quesadilla. On top of all of this, they have always closed at 11 pm (it even states it on here and on google) and we ordered another marg at 9:30 and she comes around at 9:45 saying she couldn't make it now because they close at 10. We just gave up at this point, finished our food and asked for our ticket. The person who had ordered the shrimp fajita quesadilla mentioned that she didn't want to be charged for that and only for a basic shrimp quesadilla (which is what she got instead of what she asked for) and our waitress threw up her hands and said "I'll take accountability and get your ticket" in a very rude and loud tone... basically yelled at us about it throwing her hands in the air all angrily. She never came back around and we had to get another worker to fix our ticket because she didn't fix anything and actually charged us for a chicken quesadilla plus a shrimp fajita quesadilla. Wonderful spot to stop on our way back from the beach! Great food and ambiance. Styled like a traditional Mexican restaurant, with ceramic fixtures and great tables. We got a booth near the window. Our waiter was prompt, courteous, and happy to help with our order. The tri color margarita was fantastic and just the right size. I had the Speedy Gonzales, and my husband the steak chimichanga. Both were delivered quickly and hot. Both were also bigger than expected, so we didn't feel hungry when we left! We ordered off the lunch menu and our whole bill was less than $35 including drinks and a tip. Great food! Great place for lunch for sure! read more

Best mexican restaurant in Hattiesburg. Generous portions. The fajitas actually have meat in them unlike other restaurants that fill them with mostly peppers and onions. Large bar with numerous flat screens. A fantastic place to celebrate an occasion can accommodate large parties which is nice. I would recommend this place. read more

Good Tex-Mex food. It's been surprisingly hard to find good Mexican food in Hattiesburg, at least for our family. This is becoming our go to place though. I rate places on how they do what I went there to do, and with Mexican, I just want good chips and salsa (check), fast service (check), and tasty dishes(check). It's nice if a place is clean and festive, but not necessary. This place is that. A nice festive decor greets you, and we have been seated immediately both times. I've had a chimichanga and the combo fajitas. Both were very tasty, and my goodness they PILE the food on. The portions are absolutely enormous, even by Tex-Mex standards. A single kid's quesadilla with rice and beans fed my three youngest kids 9, 7, and 5 by itself. I couldn't finish my chimichanga and left a few strips of chicken from the fajitas, not because of taste, but because I just ran out of room. This is easily a place where 2 adults can split and entree. My only complaint is my eldest daughter's shrimp dish had several shrimp with the veins still in them, which distress her greatly. Bathrooms are average. (I usually rate bathrooms, as for me, this is a mandatory part of any restaurant experience, both because I wash my hands before eating, and because I have 4 kids. Bathrooms have on occasion added or subtracted a star). Anyway, if you haven't found your Hattiesburg Tex-Mex place, give Papitos a try. We'll be back. read more

Papito's is quite honestly one of the best Mexican places in Hattiesburg. I've actually worked here at one time so I can say that the food is fresh, prepared daily, and the cooks are hard workers who truly care about delivering good quality food. While the food is a little bit Americanized it really does still cling to its Mexican/Latin American roots by being well seasoned and spiced. Overall the portions are extremely generous for the prices and while they can get quite busy some nights the wait time is never long. My menu favorites are the Parrillada for 2 which is a huge platter of carne adasa, carnitas, shrimp, chicken, chorizo, peppers and onions which is INCREDIBLE... and it will reastically feed 3-4 people rather than two. The choriqueso is great as well as the Papito's Fiesta and a dozen more things on the menu. Papitos is my go-to for birthday dinners and reunions with out-of-town friends. I live completely on the other side of town and will take the 20 minute drive past 8 other Mexican restaurants to get to this one. Fantastic restaurant. read more

The food is pretty good. It is Tex-Mex, which means that it is pretty much lots of cheese, meat and chips. There is lots of it on the plate and it was served hot. This is the worst place if there was a 0 I would rate them that & the owner even worst no customer service skills whatsoever. I called 15 min before hand to place an order & asked if I was able to do a plate with all steak instead of chicken they said yes I said I wanted two of them when I come they only charged me one & I asked them to do the same & then the owner tells me NO the person who took my order was wrong so I told them that's not my fault that's why I called before & asked. When I had to tell her then just charge me the difference to replace chicken over steak she was arguing over $3!!!! If she would've given me that option in the first place I would've saved my breath & time!! For a mistake and miscommunication on they're end. The food was pretty good, as were the $1.99 house margaritas. The staff, however, was not friendly, and SLOW. We got our chips and salsa immediately, but it took at least 10 minutes to get our drinks, and we couldn't even eat it until we got our drinks because it was spicy. We got our food in a reasonable amount of time, but once we got it, our server disappeared for at least 30 minutes. When she finally returned, she put the check on the table without a word, which we weren't even ready for, and started walking away as if she didn't want us to ask for anything else. We had to stop her to get a Togo box. We also wanted to get another margarita and maybe a dessert, but she dropped off the check and disappeared before we got the chance to ask.
