If you are drinking beers and have a hankering for food, this is the perfect match. I tried this when my husband and I visited a brewery in Carlsbad and Papas Locas was parked iin the parking lot. The truck was clean and nicely organized and our server was super friendly. I ordered 3 street tacos- al pastor and shrimp. My husband ordered 3 fish tacos. The shrimp taco basically were a mixture of shrimp and cabbage in a mayo sauce, topped with extra avocado. The al pastor was cubed pork marinated in spices with a couple pieces of canned pineapple sitting on top. The flavors were in the general range of what is to be expected, but neither had that long marinated taste or having the benefit of the complimentary flavors mixing together. (I'm used to having pineapple cooked directly into my al pastor tacos so some of the juice seeps in) and the shrimp sauce tasted simply like straight mayo- no spices or peppers added in for depth of flavor. My husband's fish tacos were battered white fish fried with a basic white sauce (probably the same as the shrimp sauce) in corn tacos that were deep friend to a crisp. read more

I'll usually trust what most of the Yelp reviews say about a business. However, a starving man needs to eat and this was the only thing around. I love Cali burrito's, I've probably eaten way too many of them. So I tried their Cali burrito. This was easily the worst burrito I've ever had. There were a couple things wrong here. The image of the Cali burrito they had on the giant menu outside the truck had guacamole and sour cream in it but the cashier was telling me that they no longer carry sour cream. I got the burrito and it was lacking the "avocado sauce" that was written in the menu description. The "french fries" stated in the burrito we're actually huge pieces of potatoes that weren't cooked properly. Potatoes were almost raw so it was sort of like biting into an apple. Lastly, I'm concerned if the carne asada was actually steak meat or some other type of meat as it had an off taste and texture about it. Total throw away burrito. 0 stars for lying to customers about what's in your burritos, serving uncooked food, and having suspect carne asada. My advice, listen to the Yelpers. Hands down the worse burrito I've ever had. It was 9.50 after a .50 charge to use my card. It was supposed to be a California burrito, of some kind, but it ended up being some version of a "kitchen sink" burrito. Aka: it was filled w/ a bunch of stuff, not a Cali burrito at all. I just found this new food truck at Balboa park and i got a ceviche tostada, it had shrimp, fish and mango, really tasty, I also got the enchilada burger because I was really curious when I saw it on the menu since it's something I've never seen before, I ordered it with Adobada pork meat and it was so good, I really recommend it, they have a lot of meat choices for the papas locas, my friend ordered one with soy chorizo and he said it was really good, we were definitely in love with the salsa bar though, so many choices and all are incredibly good but my favorite was the Roasted chile de arbol. Papas locas is by far the slowest food truck I have ever attempted to try. I say attempted as it took 20 minutes waiting in a line of ~5 people only to be told they were out of 2 proteins so shortly after the lunch hour, of course being the two I wanted. Unless practically everything on the menu looks like something you are in the mood for that day, I would not recommend this place as it is not worth a 20 minute wait only to find out they don't have so many of their options available. read more

UPDATE: Food got me sick. Never again My order was simple enough, carnitas burrito combo with no pico. The combo came with a drink, burrito, and churro. They didn't have (it's not that they were out...just didn't have them) churros. Eh fine. Order my burrito with no pico and it came with an avocado sauce inside the burrito and a red sauce on the side. There was no avocado sauce in the burrito and the red sauce on the side was flavorless (no heat, no seasoning, nothing). My huge issue is the damn pico. I HATE onions. When I say hate, I would rather play human frogger on the 5 then eat one tiny bit of raw onion. They put effing pico in the burrito. I was annoyed but considering their menu is literally 3 items and it still took them 20 minutes to throw together a carnitas burrito with soggy fries, I decided to pick them out (who knows how long or how many tries it would have taken to get one thing right) since pico is more of a "condiment" then the main component of a burrito right? Wrong. I basically spent my the rest of my lunch break picking out onions which took up half the burrito. If you do like pico de gallo still ask for them to not add it to your food. I ordered the California burrito with pollo and my order was ready in less than 10 minutes. The chicken was tasty and the burrito was pretty big. I'm a stickler for a good burrito, and this passed my test. The staff were also very polite and ran a good gig. This food truck comes to my apartment complex occasionally and I've had them twice. The first time, the food was okay. The wait was average and my quesadilla had pineapple (??) in it which was strange to me, and when I asked what was in it they made no mention of it, otherwise I would have asked them to leave it out. I'm admittedly a bit of a picky eater, but nothing too complicated. Tonight was my second time trying them and it was a much worse experience. They're scheduled from 5-8, so I show up at 5:06 and they tell me that they're sorry and I'll have to come back in 10 minutes. I walk back to the truck and arrive around 9 minutes after they sent me away, and there's already a line. After I order, the guy tells me that there's a "few" tickets ahead of me. Which I understand, as I left and I don't expect a spot to be held for me. I ask for little cups to get some salsa and as I barely apply pressure to the bottle, it proceeds to explode all over my arms and the truck because there was a blockage of dried sauce on the nozzle, which causes some concern about how often they're cleaned. I ask for napkins "because the hot sauce exploded" and the guy hands me some without so much as a "Sorry." At this point I'm slightly irritated, but I brush it off. Fast forward THIRTY MINUTES and I'm still waiting for my one small order of chicken nachos with no jalapeño. Miraculously, the girl who ordered after me, got her food before I did. One of the men was taking orders and helping prepare food. I watched very closely as he takes payment and IMMEDIATELY and WITHOUT WASHING HIS HANDS begins to sprinkle cheese on some tacos with his BARE HANDS. Which is disgusting. When they finally call my name, I open my nachos and there's no chicken to be seen and it's covered in jalapeño. I hand it back to the guy and he asks the cook, who tells me there's chicken in my nachos. The guy asked me if I wanted him to hold the jalapeño. I tell him I'll just pick them off. I get home and as I begin to eat my nachos, I find there's hardly any chicken on it and as I eat a piece of the meat on a chip, I spit out a piece of BONE. Everything was great EXCEPT the fries were very disappointing: like microwaved fries you buy at the store; soggy and flavorless. It's a shame because the carne, pico de gallo, seasoning, etc. were all on point. Some decent fries would've made all the difference. My BF liked the variety of salsas and hot sauces to choose from. His comment, "the hot sauce wasn't just hot for the sake of being hot; it was really flavorful."
