We told them that we were in a rush to get to the top of the hill before the sunset and I asked the owner to select a wine for us. He picked the most amazing white wine, opened the bottle for us and put plastic cups in a bag and sent us on our way. He was so accommodating. And the price of the wine was excellent. If you ever go to Rome it's worth a trip to this wine shop to stock up on amazing and reasonably priced wine.

On the day of the delivery I got a message (because I asked for my brewery) that brewery will be shipped next week. It's been a month that shipping will take place "next week". I'm not the only one having such delays. Unacceptable from Polsinelli to make fun of their clients. I'm waiting for "next week", who knows for how long.

My ex and I were strolling down a narrow alley and came upon this pub, The Dutch. The bartender was young with barely tamed long hair and an excellent grasp of English. We pulled up stools, ordered a strange red beer called Affligem and struck up a conversation. About the 12th time we asked him to translate something for us, he breaks out the largest dictionary I have every seen and not-so-politely tells us to look it up. We were hooked. The Dutch became our hangout for the next 2 years. But alas, all good things must come to an end... I just returned from a trip to Gaeta, my first in awhile. The Dutch is timeless. Many things are the same as they were...the quality food and drink, the warmth of the owners (it's a Mother/Father/Son enterprise), the regulars--both Italian and American. There were also a few upgrades...wi-fi, wii, a multitude of absinthe varieties and ravioli night! Not your normal raviolis, mind you. It's mama's recipe and these suckers are BIG...2 are the same size as a small plate, filled with meaty, cheesy goodness. Yeah, baby. So enough reminiscing, already... The Dutch Pub focuses on fresh, authentic food in a fun, pub atmosphere. Pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, soups, dutch food (with 24-hour notice)...the menu is pretty robust for a small pub. Much of the produce is from a local garden. Dough is made fresh daily. Even the sandwich buns are house-made. To the bar. The draught beer is pretty unique for the area--Affligem, Wicske Wheat, Murphy's Stout, and of course, Heineken. They have a large menu of shots, and like I mentioned earlier, several varieties of absinthe. And they serve Illy Coffee, yum. So I asked a man I met while traveling for some bottles I should bring back. He gave me a few producers as well as a few of his favorite bottles. Vintage and maker. I set out to find a wine shop, not a grocery store. I planned to spend a reasonable amount of money, €30-€50 a bottle. I saw a sign on the main street in quartieri spagnoli that just said "enoteco" I believe. It was brown. It was hot. The streets are steep. I had no cell signal and figured... What the hell. So up I went. And up. And up. And there it was. My Italian is pitiful, limited to basics and things you learn when your grandmother is angry at you. I walked in and the man working the shop greeted me. I asked if he spoke English, he did, very little. I explained I was looking for local wines, the varietals, and that a friend had given suggestions. He pointed out the two specific bottles on my list he had, then I asked him for recommendations on two more. As any good wine monger (my preferred term, don't judge. It makes me smile) should, he asked how much I was looking to spend, and if I liked this or that (or acidic or buttery whites, big structure or more supple reds.). Then he pulled down the bottles and told me I wanted these. I paid him, thanked him, and was on my way, back in the heat with my four bottles procured. Overall, the shop is tight. And packed. And the guy seemed knowledgeable enough. English, for an American with terrible Italian, was quite adequate. I will come here if I'm ever in Napoli again. Only complaint, and it's a small one... He put four 75cl bottles in a single plastic bag. When you are walking, A: that's heavy and a bit unruly. B: the bottles clanked constantly. I'm used to the individual bottles at least having paper to keep them from smashing against each other. I managed, and it was a good experience. Check this place out!

This local gourmet food shop was a great find in Rome!…read more One of about half a dozen locations in the Rome metropolitan region, this one is located a few blocks northeast of the Vatican. Passing by I walked in on a whim and was glad I did. Inside it's set up like an old school general store of sorts. Shelves upon shelves of all sorts of food are everywhere you look--from herbs and spices, olive oils and balsamic vinegars, dried pastas of regional brands and variety, candy and chocolates, canned/jarred/dried products from artichokes to lentils to anchovies, roasted coffee beens, even international items Thai curry sauce and Middle Eastern tahini. Hundreds of bottles of wine and liquors line the shelves. Spending about 30 minutes here, I found some pasta and cooking spices to bring back for friends as souvenirs. The prices were higher than a regular supermarket though some brands appeared to be less commonplace (or least I hope they were for those pasta prices lol). Would stop by again if in that part of Rome!
