So here I was, in barcelona, at a conference, surrounded by Jamòn Serrano and I ended up at a Greek…read morepastry shop, on my way to the beach. The owner was equal parts kindness, helpfulness, and pride in the food he offered. To quote him he said "outside of Greece or Turkey you are not going to find better Greek food than here." I mentioned that I had had Greek spinach pastries before and was going to pick something else, to which he said, "you've never had these before." So I ordered a Panakopita and a Baclava, and exited the orange and bread-colored store and started walking toward the ocean. He was right. The Panakopita was flaky and delicious, with a hint of a Greek herb that gave it a faint taste of olives. The Baklava was a good balance of flaky and sweet. I had eaten both before I made it to the beach. I was full, and yet I returned after walking along the sand to order a Carne (meat filled pastry) and a Bougatsa Crema (custard pastry). The Carne was just fine, but the Bougatsa was incredible and quite rich. It is plenty for two. While I was there, several expats with children entered so their kids could pick out a snack. Among other things, they offer what he called a 'cookied carrot stick'. I tried a sample and indeed, it tasted more like cookie than carrot, it was popular w a 4 year old and a 6 year old who both ordered them. Why this place only has two reviews on Yelp I'll never know. It should have dozens and should probably be sold out 40 minutes after it opens, but instead there's good selection even at 7pm and the ambiance is casual excellence instead of Instagram-hot-spot. I suppose tourists in Barcelona are looking for paella not Panakopita. But please, take a break from tapas and give this place a try, it will please your taste buds and impress your travel party, young and old alike.

First time in Poblenou. First time at Furnos…read more Why did I give it five stars? Bc it's the hidden gem of the neighborhood. It's like someone picked up one of the best bakeries in Greece and set it down into Barcelona. Freddo cappucino to drink. Bougatsa (creme pastry with filo) to eat. Both were authentic and made with fresh ingredients. Even writing this review has made me hungry-- I need to try something else, like some of the fresh baked breads and desserts. If you have never heard of Freddo and bougatsa, don't worry. The owner is right out front and will describe what everything is to find something to your liking. If I move here, this is where you'll find me. Furnos (oven in Greek).
