This looked like a kid's meal with super small portions. The taco shells were premade and stale. Not very much meat or cheese. The beans were bland and didn't have any beans, just blended bean paste. I come from an area where authentic Mexican culture is not really common. So I decided that, on a rainy day, I'm going to experience an authentic panderia for the first time. The girl behind the counter was really helpful in explaining some of the different foods they specialized in. That's when she pointed out the torta del tamal on the menu. I gave her my trust and ordered both the pork and chicken to go at $4 each; an amazing price. I collected my food while she muttered "hope you like it." Trust me I did. In the back of my mind I was sitting there thinking about the double carb and how consistency might clash, and wondered how onion and mayonnaise fits into this whole combo and so on and so forth. But the chaos of all these ringing questions were quelled upon impact of the first bite. Freshly baked torta bread with a warm tamale with tender meat in every bite almost like a patty, marinated in their respective sauces with a gentle bite from the sweet onion and savory finish from the mayonnaise. This is a simple delight that speaks directly to the soul. This place is one among few of the truly hidden gems that Costa Mesa has to offer. I'm glad that I got the chance today to begin a new expedition into a goldmine of culture and tradition baked fresh every day. Went during CoViD. They have sanitizer and gloves for your bread. After you use the tray and tongs they are taken back to get washed. Masks are also required. As for the bread, my favorite is the bread that comes from a sheet pan. This place has pineapple and some candy topping that I haven't seen anywhere else. How dry I am, how dry I'll be, if I don't find my trunk key.... I really wanted to like this place. But after taking one bite of their dry pastries, all I could think of was "I need water". Thankfully I had several bottles in my trunk. I was saving it for the big earthquake like the Red Cross recommends, Little did I know that the Red Cross saved me from severe throat dehydration. These were some very pretty but desicating pastries. They used ample yellow and pink food colors to try to make their stuff look delicious. But to quote a foot in mouth politician, "You can put lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig" In other words, a dry tasteless pastry is still a dry tasteless pastry. At 7:30 AM on a Saturday, none of the day laborers were hanging out here. They were all going to the Chinese owned do-nut shop on the other side of the building. I should have gotten the hint. They were about a dollar each. So, I got a concha, an apple turnover, a custard type pie, and mini pound cake. I took a few bites of each with a cup of coffee and couldn't finish anything but the apple turnover. I probably should've bought just one or two items. Then if good, I would have returned for me. Wonderful customer service and speedy checkout, however, for a place that sells Mexican sweet bread, I've found 90% of the time the conchas are hard/stale/ or overly cooked almost to the point of burnt. We were going to Catalina to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday and I knew her favorite cake was tres leches. I wanted to surprise her with one so I tried several high-end, expensive bakeries in the area to find this cake but none of them had it...I finally searched "Hispanic Bakeries" on Yelp and came across Panificadora. When I called I was told that they did have Tres Leches by the slice or a whole cake for $20! When I went in I was overwhelmed by all of the delicious looking treats in the self-serve cases as well as in the refrigerated display. I really had no idea what most of it was but I filled a box with pastries. I ended up with a couple different kinds of cookies, lemon poppyseed cake, cheesecake (that tasted more like a cross between angel food cake and cheesecake) and some kind of pineapple cake all of which were amazingly tasty. The biggest surprise was the tres leches though. It was gorgeous (see photo) and I could not believe that it was only $20 because it was incredible. I bought a slice to taste before I served it to my S.I.L and wow! I usually prefer chocolate and generally don't care for fruit filling but I absolutely loved this cake! It was moist without being soggy and all of the different flavors complemented each other beautifully. Needless to say she was super happy with it as was everyone else and there was plenty of it. I will definitely be going back there and I'm so excited that I discovered this little gem of a bakery. read more

We could not resist checking out this place right next to the Flame Broiler. Inside we find the case full of sweet dry breads that you would expect from a panaderia. But this place is called Panificadora Bakery and it has a lot of other Mexican foods available. Things that I did not expect like tamales, tacos, tortas, burritos and of course the drinks. I was pleasantly surprised that this place was able to compete with the Mexican Grill just two doors away. We bought sweet coated and chocolaty cookies and several sugar coated sweet breads and soft baked breads with a sweet pudding type jelly on top. We just piled that good stuff on the aluminum platter. I stopped in for breakfast, and really wish I hadn't. This is one of those ones that's confusing, because you won't know from the name that it's half panaderia and half fast casual restaurant. Actually, if you're not used to SoCal, you might not even know what a panaderia is and might be expecting an American bakery. It's really not that Mexican as the items go, except for some stuff in cups that looked pretty cool in a "well, if somebody dared me" kind of a way. The more standard, baked stuff looked kind of dry, but I didn't try it. My review's only dealing with the food they cook. The service was perfectly good, and about the speed you'd expect. It is a little crowded and hard to get a table, and even for a panaderia, it's really not elegant by any stretch of the imagination. My concerns were basically two, though. One is that it was burning hot. I suppose I should have known better, but learn from my mistakes. If you have to eat in a bakery, make it lunch, when they're done making the stuff. The other is that the food just didn't taste good enough to be at a restaurant. It was pretty standard Mexican breakfast fare, nothing exciting, and tasted like an average person's cooking, not a cook's.
