Tequila Orendain de Jalisco - A vintage bottle from the 1970's that was hiding at my Parents home. Not enough O's in smoooth for this one!

The operation isn't boutique small but it's not as big as Cuervo or Herradura either. They have a wide variety of tequilas. Probably about 10-15. The tour was great and the guide knew her stuff. The tequila was also delicious. Highly recommended.

(Jose Cuervo is owned by Germans and Sauza is owned by Japanese). The tour starts at the central plaza of the town of Tequila. Be careful because a number of different tour operators will approach you and you really have to be specific that you want Orendain, not another brand. They start at ambiguous times, but generally around the noon hour. The English speaking tour guide provided a background to the history of the town as we were driven out in their barrel-shaped, fun, coach out to the factory. The Orendain tour demonstrated how agave cores are pressure-steamed, crushed, fermented and distilled. The tour was quite well explained and I felt quite enlightened. However, I recommend you do some reading about the history of the settlement of the town because it adds to the whole experience (it starts in the 1500's with bloody battles between the Spanish army and the indigenous led by a priest, and continues to the 20th century industrialization). The tequila tour ends at their store, where you get really good prices on the amazing bottles of tequila and liqueurs (tequila suffused with coffee, almonds, and apricots).

My first morning there I started off with a Machiatto, a double espresso with frothed milk which is my usual order at the coffeehouses in New York. My wife kicked off the day with one of her favorites, a latte grande. The richness of the flavor without a hint of bitterness blew us away. We'd never tasted coffee like this in New York, or in Seattle for that matter. The owner of Crema di Espresso was the barista that morning, and I started up a conversation with him about Mexican coffee. I learned that it ranks among the finest coffees in the world, better than coffee from Columbia, Brazil, or even Jamaica that produces the renowned Jamaica Blue Mountain. The coffee served at Crema di Espresso is hand sourced by the owner, and roasted by him in a medium dark Italian style. Like a vintage wine, appreciation is in the eye of the beholder. If you live in Guadalajara or are visiting there, the coffee at Crema di Espresso will open your eyes to the pleasure of premium Mexican coffee superbly roasted without the bitterness that you'd expect to find in a coffee with such exceptional full-bodied flavor.

What we remembered was that the La Mentirosa was in the back and now it appears that has moved to the front and the Delicia Grill is now in the back. Tip 1: If you want a more private setting, then the back is where it is at. We sat in the back and asked for menus for both concepts. Originally, we had come for coffee and did order coffee we also ended up ordering food from the Delicia Grill. Tip 2: La Mentirosa does not offer alternative milks. I ordered an espresso, and las chicas ordered different drinks. The background music pumping from the televisions was quite loud but thankful, a thunderstorm moved into the area and wiped out the signal. Instead of David Guetta, we were treated to thunder, lighting, and a downpour of rain. If Mr. Burns, was there, it would have said, "Most Excellent" I ordered potato wedges and las chicas ordered a couple of baguette sandwiches to share. Those potato wedges are in the running of the best things I ate in Mexico this past week. Hot and crispy, they hit the spot. I the breading was not over the top, but just right. I didn't even use the ketchup or any other sauce. I casually popped one in my mouth, enjoyed it, and then went back to telling stories and sharing pictures. This continued for almost two hours. The food, the service, and the ambiance without the televisions and the rain dripping down over the bar's canape in the back could not have been better.

I loved this little spot! Will be coming back. The coffee and menus selection was delicious.read more
