But you be smarter than me and make a reservation!!! Seated in an upstairs dining room there are coat hooks on the wall, an old enameled stove as decor and maybe five tables in this cozy room with deep window sills and bench seating. We were given enough time to peruse the menu but we had checked out their menu on display outside the door and knew what we wanted. (btw: menu's in German but the waiter speaks English) My SO had the best Paprika Schnitzel he can remember ever having in our 30 years of visiting Germany. Wow. This guy loves Paprika Schnitzel! I had the small steak (200g) and it was so perfectly cooked medium and perfectly lean. I ordered it with herb butter which was exactly as flavorful as I'd hoped! You can also order it with pepper sauce or fried onions (your choice) and it comes with the house bread. Salad and other sides are a la carte. We paired our meals with a beer on tap and a dry red wine. They also have other bar items, and non-alcohol beverages. We didn't stay for coffee and dessert, but without a doubt we would happily return (with reservations) next visit!!!

So it is also a very traditional place for Speyer. It is in a street paralleling the Maximilian (main) street, the Korngasse. even tough it is not the main street you may walk there in the dark. I you walk along the Maximilianstrasse from the Cathedral (Dom) to the city tower (Altpörtel) the street narrows after the Café Hindenburg with a building called Alte Münz. Turn right there at the fountain and then the next opportunity after the fountain left (at the Schwanen Apotheke). Then walk down the Korngasse straight forward passing several other restaurants, a church (on the right), some Italian food shops also on the right and still straight forward at the chocolate shop. It is right beside this shop. Booking a table in advance for the evenings is a good idea but its worth going there and try and find out if there are some seats left. Don't be astonished if you are offered to join foreign people's table meaning sharing a table with other guests even if you don't know them. You may agree to do so because this is common in Speyer.

The food was polished. The service was good and we left full and happy. I had the goat cheese risotto plate. My wife had the salmon, and my cousin had the spatzyl. They had a patio opportunity to sit, but we sat inside. We bought Stillwater by the half liter and we shared two beers among the four of us. The beer was good and the water hit the spot. To sum it up I would not hesitate to come to this fine restaurant again.

Well, not magic. Just dark bricks and a near-empty bar to the left. So you go downstairs. And that is where the magic happens. That is where the tables are full, and, European style, you may end up sharing your table with complete strangers. The brick ceilings are low and arched, darkened with age and I imagine the soot of years of candles. It actually looks a bit like the interior of a brick pizza oven, come to think of it. The atmosphere was cozy and the place gave off a good feeling, the kind of place you want to go back to. I was gonna get the pike fish, the menu description intrigued me. (Thank goodness for Google translate.) But I always ask the servers what's amazing, and he said hands down the burger. I had no idea I wanted a burger. But it was the perfect meal for me at that moment. Sometimes things just click. It was dense. It was meaty. It was thick and a little bit smoky. I had trouble getting it into my mouth, and I went through about 4 napkins because it was so juicy. Even the fries were the perfect crunch. Hubs and his work colleague each went for steak. I tried hubs' (that's what I do, and it's part of the marriage contract, right?), and it was the perfect doneness for me, medium rare, almost but not quite bloody. Be advised, though, hubs had ordered his "rosa", which is to say medium and pink. They evidently consistently undercook their steaks, because I was a little sad for hubs' colleague, who ordered his well-done, and that's just wrong (at least he didn't top it with ketchup). But it came out a happy pink, which was his plan, so he's figured out what to say to the chefs to get what he wants. Hubs' colleague told us before we ordered that the creme brulée was amazing here so we each got one. Delicious! And accompanied by fruit, ice cream, and a decorative garnish of chocolate, mango, and raspberry syrups. I love recs because I never would have found this place, or that meal, or that dessert without help. And I would go there again in a heartbeat.

If you enter the building you step into an entrance area first. I think lately there was a bar or vinotheque opened in that area. The restaurant is down in a cosy vaulted cellar. Don't be astonished if you are offered to join foreign people's table sharing a table with other guests. You may agree to do so because this is common in this part of Germany.
