On March 3rd, 2016, we took our 3 year old gentle and kind Portuguese water dog to a "Doggie Daycare/Kennel-free" service called Pampered Paws on Hammond's Plains Road in Halifax. This was our first visit as we normally take our dog to a wonderful kennel in Porters Lake but unfortunately they were full. On March 3rd we dropped off our dog and with some trepidation due to the significant number of dogs confined to a small place. We were assured all would be good and left for our trip for March Break. Within 3 hours of being dropped off, she was bitten under the belly in two areas and required immediate stitches. We were called and the owner informed us that she did not know our dog had been bitten until she saw blood on the floor. See attached pictures (taken post getting stitches). She indicated that we should come and pick her up. Unfortunately, we were on the plane about to take off for the Caribbean. They then told us that she needed stitches. I told them to look after it and we would do our best to contact someone to pick her up the next day. The following day, my close friend picked her up. They then charged my friend $51.75 for the night; did not assist her with taking the dog to the car with her bags of food (one of which they forgot to return); and did not give my friend the cone that was given by the vet to ensure she would not pull her stitches out. They were completely unhelpful. Also, our dog required antibiotics for a full week.
When I called the owner upon our return, she had no idea who my dog was who got bitten. Once I reminded her and told her how stunned I was how poorly this was handled, she has no response. The purpose of this posting is to ensure that you are aware of the issues we had with Pampered Paws. We understand that dogs can get bitten but we feel that this was the case of over-crowding, a clear reflection that doggie daycares and kennels are not regulated. Additionally, their mishandling of the situation from start to finish is almost as worrisome as the bites. Little concern; no follow-up; and at a cost of $51.75 for a one night stay. Also, be aware that they charge an additional $10.00 a day to walk your dog. This of course is a result of the lack of space for exercise. So total cost for one night- $61.75. Also, they note that they have webcams, but they appear not to be working?
Quality kennels at March Break-book ahead at least 6 months! This is the first time we have gone away at March Break. Rest assured, we are booked with our wonderful Kennel in Porters Lake for March Break 2017!
