It's a bit of a drive from San Diego, but in my opinion, worth it! There's lots of trees on this hike, it is beautiful in the fall (although in the fall the river is dry, in the spring you get that benefit). I've done this hike 3 times now, this last time we couldn't find the start at the bottom by the campgrounds, so we ended up driving up to the observatory and starting there. You're technically starting at the "top", hiking down and then back up this way - but the hike is pretty easy and doesn't make the hike back up too hard. I am pretty sure you just look for the Observatory campgrounds and can start from there too. It's out and back, about 2.5 miles each way. This time we actually ended up getting lost twice, which had never happened before. Both times (once on the way there, and once on the way back) was where the trail meets the river bed. Since the river wasn't running, we accidentally took the river bed trail instead of the actual trail and had to turn around, so keep your eyes out for that! Even on a weekend, this trail never gets too crowded, so it makes for some nice quiet nature time. Trail is definitely dog friendly with all the shade and not too steep.

The Palomar Observatory Trail is one of my favorite hikes in all of San Diego. This trail is not the most of anything. It is not the most strenuous, the longest, the easiest to get to, nor does it offer up the most open panorama views of the county; its charm is in its variety of sights, terrain, and recreation. The trailhead is located in the Palomar Observatory campground. The drive to this site is considerable but beautiful, so I suggest making this trip an all day or at least a half day affair in the mountains and surrounding communities. A $5 day use fee is enforced. The novelty in this hike for a southern Californian, and perhaps the reason why I am so fond of it, is because shade is never too far away. Certain parts of the trail never see sun, and shade-loving plants like ferns are able to grow in cool, dark groves here. (This goes for poison oak as well- so be aware.) This trail is often thinly populated. There are even less hikers during the work week or outside of summer break months. Not that I follow my own advice, but it would be a good idea to bring along a friend or two as this is prime mountain lion country, and you can't rely on heavy trail use to scare them off. A vantage point about half a mile from the campground allows for a brief glimpse out of the tree line into the valley below. Pay attention to the smells of different trees and brush as the landscape changes during your relatively short ascent (or descent). Assuming you've just hiked from the campground up the very mild grade to the observatory, (about 2.25 miles one way) you can now wander around the observatory grounds and enter the giant white dome for free or pay a few bucks for a tour of the telescope. Getting here always feels like a prize after a short hike, but a hike nonetheless. Take the same trail back down to your car.

The lower trail head for this hike starts in the Observatory Campground off of S6 on Palomar Mountain. There is a little amphitheater at the head of the trail. From there, you work your way up on the shady trail until an overlook with a sweeping view of Mendenhall Valley. The trail continues up until the Palomar Mountain Observatory. The trip is a little over 2 miles one way. Good workout... great views.

My friendly dog and I did this beautiful hike during winter months (Mars-2015) totally love it the whole scenery was beautiful I would defiantly try it again like many have mention it would be nice if had couple signs We where there after the stormy weekend and plenty of snow on the ground we just actually fallow the foot steps in the snow to fallow our way to the end of the trail. On our way back notice on of the trees felt down and block part of the trail nothing big we just jump over \O_O/

Seeing this wonder had been in the back of my mind as well, so I said, "Let's do it!" Having only recently lost his wife, through tears he explained to our amazing, friendly and knowledgeable guide Christi that he'd hoped to bring her up to the observatory someday, but she passed before he'd had the opportunity to do so. To Christi, he said, "I'd love to look through that 200" telescope and try to find my wife in Heaven." Definitely a tug on the heartstrings moment... and she responded with the sort of compassion one would expect from a family member. As other reviewers have noted, the public is not allowed to look through the scope; that privilege is reserved for nighttime astronomers. News to this 70-year-old reviewer... learn something new every day! That said, Christi explained to us the intricate construction of the telescope, the "re-mirroring" every two years, how the entire dome rotates to accommodate the different astronomers' needs, why the inside of the observatory is kept at a chilly 40°, and so much more. She told us she was "...new here..." but would answer as many questions as she could. Well, I'm a questioner, especially when seeing an incredibly complicated device such as the Hale Telescope (named after astronomer George Ellery Hale). Christi was able to answer most of my inquiries, and I have no doubt she will research the answers to any questions that stumped her. I cannot recommend this young woman highly enough to the powers that be at Mt. Palomar Observatory. Next to the gift shop is a small but very informative room for visitors thirsting for more information. The infinity of the Universe has always fascinated me, along with the mind-boggling intelligence of those who wish to explore its vastness. This tiny room is bursting with their stories. To those who posted "glass-half-empty" reviews here, I'm sorry the wonder of this landmark was lost on you. Perhaps you'll give it another look sometime. Getting a feel for how tiny our little planet Earth is when compared to the infinite puts our very existence into an entirely new perspective.

I have to say it's still incredibly beautiful in the evening, watching the sunset. It's definitely one of the best views around and getting a chance to see the stars so brilliantly is a must as the pollution is more limited up there, making for clearer skies. The elevation is obviously higher, so dress in layers. I didn't drive up here this time, which was really nice, I had the chance to catch up on my sleep. It's not that bad of a drive though. We stayed nearby overnight, but it's worth the drive either way imo. There aren't that many places like this, especially in underdeveloped areas. The Pine House Cafe & Tavern is nearby on the Sunrise Highway if you get hungry afterwards. Be forewarned there's a bit of a walk to the top of the road from the visitor parking lot to the visitor's center. Adjacent to the visitor's center are the two apartments for visiting astronomers, a lecture hall, a kitchen for public gatherings, and the museum/gift shop. The Mount Laguna Observatory is owned and operated by SDSU under permit from the Cleveland National Forest. It's not unusual to see SDSU or local community college students here working on research projects or school activities. They do have a dedicated visitor's telescope and deck for public viewing. There are other telescope domes that are not available to the general public, but if you're willing to get a graduate degree in astronomy from SDSU I'm guessing you can get in there..
