The gorgeous view and mountains behind me

On a clear day you can see all the way from Downtown LA to Catalina. Views are spectacular! Most trails are relatively easy but can be narrow. There is a lot of informative history is here to explain the making and reason for the large telescopes. A great day trip from the surrounding LA, Ventura and Orange Counties. If it's really cold, you might see some snow or ice on the ground!

One of my absolute favorite places in the whole world, sitting at 5,713 ft over La Cañada Flintridge! Sometimes you'll get beautiful foggy days, other times you'll see a layer of beautiful clouds, and it looks like heaven on Earth. All of the staff and volunteers are super friendly & informative--their tours are super educational and give exactly the type of history that you'd love to learn about.

This is a way overdue review, but I came here for a very special wedding for a close friend of mine. I had no idea the journey it would take to get here by car. It's a bit of a windy road, and it takes a bit (although on GPS it says it'll be fast). It gets steep quick too! Once you reached your destination, you'll be wowed by the observatory. The views are just unreal. We were able to go inside the observatory, but unfortunately, due to visibility, we weren't able to use the telescope. However, I'm going to have to make it back here one day to see through that telescope. They also have shows during the summer here, which is found on their site. Definitely a must see if you're looking for an out of the box attraction in LA.

Come up here on a weekend for a tour of this historic place. Do not miss the 100" telescope plus a the complex of buildings. This is where history was made. Einstein and Stephen Hawking both were here.

COVID-19 Review / 3.6.21: In case you're wondering, Mt. Wilson Observatory is NOT open yet and is closed to the public. If you drive up to the skyline park, you'll find the gates are closed. But, if you're really bored and want a cool, literal bird's eye view of Los Angeles, Mt. Wilson Red Box Rd is open up till the gate to the park/observatory, and you can still park on the side around Circle Road (put in KNBC-TV transmit on Google maps to find approximate location) to get a great, free view. I saw plenty of people parked around the bottom to hike up here, which is fine considering there aren't many cars coming up for the time being. For a short hike, you could put in Eaton Saddle Trailhead (which also has a great viewpoint of the mountains) and walk up to this area. Looking forward to when this place does open up again. I was here a few years ago and it was pretty cool to see the telescope up close and enjoyed walking around the park. It's a great hidden gem if you don't mind a windy drive up (which isn't too terrible and pretty well paved most of the way).

This place looks like the set of a season of Stranger Things. High above the clouds, we couldn't see the city the entire time we were there. Super cool, even if there was no view. We started hiking but here were tons of bugs so we did the loop trail around the telescopes and took some pictures. Pretty great Saturday morning an hour out of the city!

I realize COVID-19 has affected the whole world, but why did it close Mount Wilson access? Maybe the crowds were a problem, or liability of illness or injury, but I can't help feeling sorry for driving up the 9 miles of twisty turns and rock laden road to find the gates locked and no access. Fortunately, some hikers opened the gate from the back and at least I was able to see the wonderful view of the valley. I wish the Forrest Service would open the gate for hikers, or just keep the entry gate closed at the base of the mountain. In any event, I was happy to at least see the views from a distance.

This is my favorite hidden gem in LA. If I've brought you here, you're special. Standing 5,000 above LA lies the beautiful mount Wilson observatory. This is where the speed of light was calculated for the first time. Can you wrap your head around that?! What a timeless piece of history. Not only is there a museum and observatory at the peak but there's also a hidden swing if you can find it. When you drive up here, you can also find lots of hikers as it is the top of a peak included in the 6 pack of peaks. Not the coolest hike bc you see people in there cars but cool nonetheless lol

Winter wonderland occurs sometimes in the winter

Took a field trip at work here last week. It was a good change of scenery to see nothing but open mountains roads and vistas versus hectic, congested LA. On time of there it was only a week after that massive storm where they got 2 feet of snow so there were still a lot of snow on the ground. Total winter wonderland. Our volunteer told guide was great and you can tell how passionate he is with his job. He's very knowledgeable about the history of the observatory. We were able to go inside the two observatories but didn't get a chance to see the telescope in action. There's a small museum next to the Tower. Not much else to do there but a quiet, peaceful walk. And beautiful after a heavy snowfall.

I could write a review for Mount Wilson Observatory, but I don't have much more to add that has already been written by Michael S. on 11/5/2012. I don't think it is actively used for major purposes because there are so many other newer and more sophisticated telescopes around the world. I do think groups can rent them out for a half or full night. That might be fun to do. They are trying to raise some money with the Star Parties. When we drove up there they were just setting up for one. I wish we could have stayed, but we had a hungry dog waiting at home for his dinner. I also forgot to bring a coat and hat. It gets really cold up there even if it is warm down in La Canada. I would highly recommend driving up there and walking around the property. Just try to go before the end of November. I think they close the Cosmic Café and some other things the first quarter of the year. Here is a great article in LA Magazine about it: http://www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/discovering-mount-wilson-observatory/

After hiking 7 miles from the Mt. Wilson trail this was a well needed and deserved meal. They serve sandwiches, hot dogs, cold/hot drinks, chips, candy, and ice cream bars. I ordered the turkey sandwich with avocado. The sandwich was plentiful and they don't skimp out on the avocado. All sandwiches come with coleslaw and it's fresh and tasty! My friends had fritos covered in chili and cheese they said it was good but I didn't try it. The workers are very friendly and although they sell bottled water they were refiling everyone's empty bottles for free. Obviously it's tap but still nice of them to do. Definitely a great place to relax before heading back down the trail. Or you could plan ahead and have one car waiting for you at the top in the parking lot. I wish we did this instead!

This is truly a hidden gem above the clouds. Only a half hour or so from the bottom of Glendale. It's a beautiful drive! Great lookout spots along the way as well as hiking. The observatory is really nothing like the commercialized Griffith Park Observatory. (I love both, but this one is more of a working observatory). Drive up into the Angeles Crest, Hwy 2 and make a right towards Mt Wilson. At the top of the mountain you'll see two one way roads. Either one will get you there. The road that goes up will take you in between all the radio towers. (Really cool) and the one to the right will take you to the rim. (Also very cool). Both end up at the gates of the observatory. NOTE: they are not opened year round so check their website for current days and times. You'll see a big black rot iron gate. Drive in and park. There are signs to follow to get to the different telescopes. They do offer small tours for under $10 each, with discounts for children and seniors. I have not taken this tour yet but have seen a group that was able to go inside and stand under the big telescope where Hubble once sat. There is quite a few stairs you need to climb to get up inside and it's not handicap accessible. You are behind glass and they have an audio that explains what you are looking at. My favorite here is the views. Take a hike and venture the many trails they have through the big pines. YOU MUST BUY AN ADVENTURE PASS for parking here or anywhere on the Angeles Crest drive. You can buy one at the bottom of the hill at a sporting good store (most carry them. $30 for a year $5 for a second car, and I think it's $8 for a day pass) or just as you enter the park there is a ranger station. (But can't guarantee they are always open). And there is a concession stand that generally is opening at the observatory, called the Cosmic Cafe, as well that sells them. Proceeds help fund the State Parks so please look at it as helping our community and parks. Rangers will ticket. Again this place is beautiful. Go up for a late lunch, take a hike, watch the sunset and enjoy a little piece of heaven above the clouds. The Cosmic Cafe is inexpensive and yummy. Basic comfort foods, hot cider, hot chocolate, etc. Stop in and say hi. It's outdoors and weather teens to be 15-20 degrees colder up here so dress in layers and most certainly bring a jacket. Enjoy!!!

Can't think of a better way to spend a clear night in Los Angeles. To see the universe through the 100 inch telescope is something that I will always remember, and not just because it makes you realize just how small and insignificant this blue green planet is (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy reference) The people that work here or volunteer will be able to answer any questions you have and you'll leave smarter then when you arrived.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience here at Rubel Castle. Our host, guide,…read moreand local "Rubelligent" volunteer, Ms. Kathleen had all the intel about this historical property. She was so knowledgeable and helped set the stage for us to slip into a forgotten era and get a glimpse of how imagination met inventiveness with a DIY charm. ~ A LITTLE BACKSTORY FOR YOU ~ It's not pronounced Rubel as Barney from Flintstones. Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. To book, visit RubelTours.org and make a reservation. ~ OUR TOUR EXPERIENCE ~ It's as if Michael Rubel, the creator and mastermind of this enchanted dominion had intended it to be--magical. Built in the castle period of wood and tin, every corner captured our interests, from antique cars to the 1890's Seth Thomas Tower Clock with a unique backstory (and only six in existence today). There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? Thanks to the sheer persistence (and probably delightful stubbornness) of Michael Rubel, we now have this quirky, towering State Treasure sitting right in the middle of Glendora like a fairy tale that accidentally took a detour through a hardware store. This place is beautifully done, and part of its charm is that it's a full-on hodgepodge of relics, antiques, crystal trinkets, and "wait... what is that doing here?" moments tucked into every nook and cranny. You'll marvel, you'll laugh, you'll squint in confusion--honestly, it's everything you'd want in a castle built with love, imagination, and a dash of madness. And let's talk about the makeshift cemetery. Quirky? YES. Fun? Absolutely. Slightly spooky? Only if your imagination is over-caffeinated. But it fits the vibe perfectly--like the castle whispered, "You know what I'm missing? A tiny cemetery." The tours are fantastic, the guides are passionate, and the whole experience feels like you're stepping into a living scrapbook of California history and charming chaos. Overall: Amazing, amazing place. Book your tour. They only do tours every first Sunday of the month, so set your alarms, mark your calendars, tie a string around your finger--just don't miss it. Rubel Castle is truly a California State Treasure, and an absolute must-see for anyone who appreciates creativity, history, and a little eccentric sparkle.

Queen Anne Cottage & Coach Barn - Got my golden ticket for a tour of the cottage interior! (Nov 2025)

I've been an active member of the LA County arboretum for years and FINALLY got to explore the…read moreinterior of the Queen Anne cottage this holiday season (2025)! The inside is as beautiful as the outside and full of local history. The guides were thoroughly knowledgeable and enthusiastic in discussing the details as we meandered through the cottage - and I especially loved that they were dressed in Victorian era clothing! Elias Jackson Baldwin (aka Lucky Baldwin) was a very prominent figure in this area in the late 1800s. He owned over 13,000 acres here - land that included the present day cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Sierra Madre, Pasadena and San Marino. I always enjoy hearing about history involving Lucky Baldwin because he still technically has an easement on our property and his name is on the title to our house haha! He built this cottage and coach barn in the late 1870s for his 4th wife but apparently they split up not long after they were married so he turned it into a memorial for his 3rd wife who had passed away (drama drama lol). It was then used as a guest house for visitors to the ranch. The cottage is quite opulent with ornate fireplaces, ceilings, and chandeliers, as well as some of the most intricate and colorful stained glass window pieces I've ever seen! I absolutely loved them! They are all original to the house - as well as all the beautiful tile accents in the floors and around the fireplaces. There's some original redwood paneling in the bathroom that you'll also find in the coach barn which is gorgeous and in excellent condition. Unfortunately, Baldwin's daughter who inherited the house after his passing, threw out all their furniture and belongings. So all the other items you see are not original to the house - but are still period appropriate antiques belonging to the era. I believe they do suggest children not do the tour as there are many fragile items in cramped spaces so be aware. The tours are pretty brief as you can only explore the downstairs rooms and there aren't that many - the receiving room/entryway, the music/entertainment room, a small hallway room, a bedroom, bathroom, and the library with butlers pantry. But still definitely worth a visit! The stained glass windows in the library have portraits of Shakespeare and Lord Byron in the glass - those alone are worth going on the tour if you ask me! Several movies and TV shows have been filmed in parts of the cottage as well (of course) - such as Fantasy Island (from the 70s) and even an episode of American Horror Story! The coach barn is always open during garden open hours, but the cottage has been closed as long as I've been visiting (over 5 years now). So when I saw the member email saying they were offering tours, I jumped on it lol! The tours aren't available very often from what I read. So far, they've only offered the tours on weekends during the holiday season starting in November this year and it looks like they are sold out online for the rest of the season. But when I visited, they were offering tickets for tours on site so you may still be able to tour. There are staff in a blue tent outside the cottage to ask when you arrive. Online tickets do include entry into the garden as well, which is worth exploring in its own right - would make for a great day out! If you're at all into Victorian era architecture and culture and the local history, I'd suggest signing up for the arboretum newsletter and keep an eye out for when they offer tours of the cottage.

Never once did I checked out the Queen Anne Cottage, Coach Barn, and Adobe until most recently. The cottage, barn, and adobe are located along side and/or around Baldwin Lake. Cottage was not open for tours at the time so I wasn't able to go inside. I admired its beauty from the outside and walked around its serene and calming perimeter. I did take a peek inside through its windows and snapped a few photos. Funny, I was actually hesitant to take photos of its inside... wasn't sure if an alarm was going to sound off LOL. Whew, no alarm! One thing I found peculiar is how small the bed is. It's not even the size of a full size bed... I think it's in between a twin and full size IMHO. Anyway, I read the cottage didn't even have a kitchen so the meals were prepared at the adobe. I walked around the abode, but didn't peek inside for some reason. I may have the courage to do so next time LOL. I also got a chance to walk inside and through the coach barn. Saw some displays of antique carriage and stuff. There were a few horse stalls. I didn't walk towards them for some reason. I guess the energy didn't call for it at the moment. Maybe I will next time. Be brave Linh! LOL Definitely, a lot of history surrounding the cottage, coach barn, and adobe. If you haven't been at the LA Arboretum or have been and just haven't seen the cottage, barn, and adobe, it's time to make it happen! Note well: while a project is currently underway to bring potable water back to Henninger, as of September 2018, there is STILL NO DRINKING WATER AT HENNINGER. Bring plenty of drinking water, especially if you are continuing deeper into the mountains on a longer hike. Most of the times that I visit, there are Boy Scout group camping on the weekend. Camping is free here, but you need to reserve the spot.

Like we hiked for a total of 10 miles, an entire day later, 2 sandwiches, trail-mix and extensive water-bottling. It's an awesome workout. And yes and mentioned by others, the recreational hikers stay far, far below. This hike is steep, and winds for miles. Once you arrive at the nature center, there is a cool centuries old restroom. I found this lovely, don't ask why. Vintage is my vibe. The nature center is educational. There are diagrams of tree and forest history. Stuffed wild animals, of the smaller variety: squirrels, birds, and the like. And the three-dimensional map of the forest range is cool. You feel like such a tiny fragment of a massive universe. Of which, we are regardless. It just places you in this perspective, at that very moment. The forest rangers are cordial. Yes, not park ranger bc it's this Rustic. Also, note you can buy water bottles at the nature center. This is vital bc the hike is extensive and you may need like 10 refills. So here you are. There isn't a filtered water supply elsewhere. These are also camp grounds, and pine trees nestle together here for miles. And the vista is gorgeous.

After watching stuff on TV I decided to Google, not expecting to find a group in my backyard! (practically) So I jumped at the chance to go on a local History & Haunt Tour with them. We walked around the Mission museum (behind the Playhouse), HS, church, cemetery and ending at the doors of the Playhouse. As we were walking up to the doors of the Playhouse their was a strong floral scent. As the organizers thanked everyone for attending they walked towards the sidewalk. My daughter, Michelle (organizer), and myself stayed behind. I love old buildings so I asked my daughter to take a few pictures. As we walked away we heard the Playhouse doors open and slam shut!! Now these doors are huge. So you can imagine how loud that was. Before the tour ended Michelle had pulled on the doors and they were locked. We stood still for a second, turned around expecting/wishing someone to be standing there. The 3 of us ran up to the doors, we tried pulling on the doors again and they were locked and now the inside lights were on. My daughter and I stared at each other and then at Michelle. It was the weirdest feeling. We eventually caught up with everyone else and told them what they missed. We've also attended their Scary Movie Night at Savannah Cemetery. That was cool. We also made it to Paranormal Night II which I convinced my husband to attend. We're planning on going to the meet-up at Devils Gate Dam. I listened to Michelle's GB session on Facebook, can't wait! On the car ride home from their events I always tell my daughter...."we found our people"! So believers and non-believers attend one of their local events. You may never know what you'll see/hear/experience.

You can explore many exhibits inside the observatory at no cost. We walked around the ground floor and the lower level, and there's actually a lot to see. There's also a free shuttle bus running every 10 minutes, which is super convenient. You can also get here by car or public transportation. From the hill, you get stunning panoramic views of Los Angeles -- I highly recommend coming before sunset to catch the golden hour and take amazing photos. The view of the Hollywood sign is also very good from here. Inside, there's a café and a gift shop, so you can easily spend a few hours here. Just keep in mind that access inside depends on opening hours: Tuesday-Friday: 12 PM - 10 PM Saturday-Sunday: 10 AM - 10 PM Monday: Closed We've been here several times and highly recommend visiting when the observatory is open inside. If you drive, parking is about $10 per hour. On the way back, I recommend walking down one of the trails -- it's a great experience with beautiful views. Also, if you're planning to hike closer to the Hollywood sign, be prepared: bring water and wear comfortable shoes -- it's about a 4-mile hike. Such an iconic LA spot that's absolutely worth visiting!
