Marilyn (owner)- When I brought my puppy to be groomed by Marilyn, I was given a disclaimer that first visits may not produce desired looks, as puppies can be difficult. I was pleased upon pick up; she was able to do the full cut. My dog looked great.
Marilyn provided an in-person consultation pre-appointment and a report on how my dog did post-appointment. She was great at communicating and did a great job on the cut.
$95
"Stewie" (groomer)- When I brought my second puppy to be groomed, I was given the same disclaimer. Upon pick up, my second dog was not able to receive the cut; she still had her full coat of fur. Her service included the bath, cleaned up around her eyes, and a nail clipping.
Stewie's consultation was pretty quick, I didn't leave feeling as confident as I was when I worked with Marilyn. At pick-up, Stewie did not come out to offer an explanation or report on my dog's experience, which would have been nice given the service was not able to be completed.
$85
Understanding my disappointment, the front desk offered me to come back in a couple weeks to try again. I told them bi-weekly appointments at $85 wasn't something I wanted to do and would schedule out my regular eight weeks if that's what they were offering. Front desk then went back to discuss with Stewie the terms of the appointment. It was then that I was offered a complimentary service, which I accepted.
When I got home, the offer didn't sit right, as I understood groomers' pay has to do with the services they provide. To me, a complimentary service suggested the groomer felt responsible somehow. So, I called PBP to ask (1) Did something go wrong (i.e.- not enough time), (2) Why two weeks out if my dog was freshly groomed now; I felt bad the groomer was going to go through the whole process again, (3) Could I come by to get the comped appt in writing.
1. The comped appointment was scheduled for a time when Stewie would have more time to spend with my dog.
2. Two weeks out was suggested to allow for my dog to decompress before going in for another try.
3. Front desk confirmed the comped appointment and told me not to worry about coming by as my next appt was in two weeks and that she would remember.
Always get it in writing, everyone. I showed up and was asked to pay $120 in addition to having already paid $85 a couple weeks prior. Despite recalling our conversation at the first pick-up, our phone conversation regarding the second comped service they offered (I didn't ask- they were the ones that offered it), and me telling them I wasn't interested in paying for bi-weekly services, especially if the cut wasn't guaranteed, the offer of the complimentary service was conveniently forgotten.
The only explanation offered was that I was the one who must have misunderstood. The situation is really too bad and pretty disappointing. Marilyn was really good. Stewie also did a really nice job the second time. If you choose to give these guys a shot, remember- always get it in writing.
08/25/2022 UPDATED RESPONSE:
It should be noted Marilyn was not a part of communication or transactions with my second dog. The following is true and accurate:
I did not change my request.
I requested the same cut/style both times.
See time-stamped photos sent to Stewie; same photo sent for both appointments.
Text associated with photo sent on 8/12 was reiterated info due to no consult provided by Stewie.
The first appointment was not able to be completed due to Stewie not having enough time to spend with my dog
I was very clear I did not want to do bi-weekly appointments with no guarantee the cut could happen.
I was very clear that I would schedule out my regular eight weeks if the offer to come back was another appointment for which I would be charged.
The front desk never communicated the appointment would cost more. In fact, I was told the "re-do" would not cost anything at all.
I never refused payment. Marilyn's comment "I refused to take her payment" suggests I offered to pay, which I did.
To Marilyn's comment that I could not afford to pay- The 3.5K and 5K price tag associated with my dogs suggests otherwise. It wasn't the $120 that was the problem. The problem is that I was told two very different things. There was no truth in how the business transaction was handled then, and it is absent now.
To Marilyn's comment that she's never used the word "complimentary"- That's true. She was not the person who said the service was to be complimentary. Her front desk lady said it twice. Check your surveillance; you'll hear and see exactly what was said. Don't be upset with me, redirect your staff.
Lastly, I did not throw anything at anyone. I left Stewie's tip on the counter and left.
Thank you, Marilyn, for this gem of a response. Your reply speaks to your 30 years as a professional and it's good the public can see that. In case you have second thoughts and choose to take your reply down, I went ahead and attached it. I got it in writing. read more
