The restaurant itself is fairly small, with one main room and a small bar/waiting area. The room itself is a bit bare - plain walls and a wooden floor - and felt functional rather than inviting to me. Note there's also limited car parking nearby, although the location - overlooking the old harbour at Barry - is very pleasant. The food is fine, if not remarkable, although I found the vegetarian choice rather limited: plenty of starters to choose from, but only one pasta dish on the main menu and another pasta dish on the Christmas menu. That's just enough, but Italian restaurants normally have more choice. (They don't serve pizza here). It's also the first Italian I've been to in a long time where there weren't olives available to nibble on. It's reasonably priced (around £25 a head), and staff were friendly enough, but two things put me off a little: the first was their wanting us out after two hours for a second sitting; and the second was they ran out of the best dessert on the menu (Amaretto Creme Brulee) even for us - and we were the first diners in that evening. Four of us wanted it, but were told only two puds were left. So, overall, it's OK, and may be better when outside the Christmas period.

This family-run restaurant serves delicious Italian and British food. It has a friendly, intimate…read moreatmosphere and is conveniently located near the sea front. All the food is freshly prepared so this is a place for 'slow food' and not 'fast food'. The staff are attentive without being intrusive. The decor is smart without being formal. The price (around £25 for a three course meal) is good value for the quality and level of service received. There are always vegetarian dishes on the menu and also an excellent choice of fish dishes which change according to the season. It is best to book if you plan to go at the weekend as this restaurant is very popular.

La Calabria is probably the best restaurant I've been to since arriving in the United Kingdom…read more Nestled in the countryside of central Wales, La Calabria is one of those places you don't expect to find after having had so many fair-to-midland meals. This place prides itself on serving Calabrian cuisine, which the restaurant describes as "... primarily a diet of simple fresh pastas, homegrown vegetables cooked in a myriad of ways, and meats, particularly pork." Pasta, though important to all regions of Italy, in Calabria it is "... treated with an almost reverence." If I had read this about the restaurant prior to going there, I would definitely have had a pasta dish. But I didn't, and chose one of their house specialties instead, Pollo Marsala. Ironically, none of the restaurant's specialties includes pasta. The Marsala was like none I've had in the past, and it was excellent. The chicken wasn't overwhelmed by the Marsala. Overall it was a simple meal served with roasted potatoes and green beans. On this occasion I broke down and had their dessert, trying their homemade ice cream. One scoop of hazelnut and one scoop of Nutella, which may seem redundant to the hazelnut, but there truly is a distinctive difference just like true hazelnut and Nutella. Also, I sampled the Fruits of the World, a berry ice cream. Great care is taken in presenting the meal and making each patron feel welcome. If you arrive early, they invite you to sit down in the front bar area, where you can order drink, look over the menu, order your meal and get to know those sitting next to you. Once your table is ready, your waitress escorts you to your table. I have to admit that my first choice for that night's meal was at the Daffodil Inn, which is down the road in Penrhiwllan, but they didn't have any available tables for the night. In the end, it didn't matter, because La Calabria was excellent and truly exceeded all of my expectations in every way. It is highly recommended to call La Calabria for reservations at least the morning of your dinner plans.
