Two seoerate occasions I have experienced rudeness and unprofessional behavior from management. I don't have any issue with the Vet or the care of our animal. It's the vagueness of Cost that I experienced and that blood work was performed when I specifically told them not to do it. After they charged for the blood work which was $99, they initially didn't care that I told them not to do it. They just wanted the money. After a few relatively angry conversations they relented and agreed that they wouldn't charge for it. I honestly didn't understand their stance at all because I cleary told them not to run the test, They didn't even deny it. That was about 2 years ago. I thought things were settled and honestly totally put the incident out of my mind. Today, I called a few places to get a quote for my Dogs teeth cleaning. I like to know what type of cost to expect. Paleface was one of them. Whoever answered the phone told me it was $200. I asked about any additional charges and if there can be any because my Dogs teeth are pretty bad. Notice how I always try to know exactly what I'm getting into expense wise? They were also a fair amount cheaper than others so I was skeptical. She told me no other cost besides the cost of teeth extraction if needed and gave me a range for those. I decided to book an appointment. She asked if I had been there in the past and had trouble finding me. Eventually, she found my account and then she informed me that I had a charged off balance of $99. I told her about the entire story above and was slightly annoyed that it was being shown as a charge off when I was told that they would take care of it a few years ago. She then informed me that due to my Dogs age, blood work needed to be ran for an additional charge of $99 above the "estimate" she had just given me 1 minute before and that other charges could occur too, Her story changed totally after I explained the disagreement I had before with the clinic. When I pointed out that they need to be clear about charges because suddenly she changed her story on the "estimate" only after I told her my prior experience and issue with the exact thing that was now occurring again. Keep in mind Im not arguing about what they charge. Makes sense they want to have extra precautions for an older Dog but say that upfront. I just wanted a clear and upfront scenario of what to expect money wise and what if any extra charges I may occur. This obviously would factor in if I wanted to obtain the services or not. Now, suddenly she started to back peddle on the "estimate" she just gave and that it was only an "estimate" and not a "quote". Sounds ridiculous right? There is a difference between a "quote" and a "estimate"? I asked her why she is raising her voice and that once again, I only wanted a very good idea as to what to expect to avoid my previous issue. She then told me to call and speak to the office manager and abruptly hung up, I called back (Should have just totally forgot them) and the manager answered and informed me also about their "quote" vs an "estimate". AND That they would require the previous $99 to be paid before they would do the teeth cleaning, Why would I even consider using them at that point. Was it worth the $99 to them to alienate a customer and gain a negative review? I guess so. Just my experience. Your mileage my vary. Maybe get both a "quote" and a "estimate" to be sure. read more

That knowledge gives them a broader level of experiences that may help them figure out things with other pets. I've been to many vets for more than 30 years and you can't beat a country vet. I cannot say enough great things about this clinic!! They are the best vet I have ever had, and I've moved around a bit!! I used to live in Spicewood but moved to downtown Austin, and I still make the 40 minute drive for all of my pets' needs- if that tells you anything about their care. Dr. Matt is so kind and caring; you can tell he loves the animals, the people, his job in general. He has not lost his compassion, love, or empathy for his little furry patients despite all his years of experience. I have taken all four of my pets there for various issues (old age, rattlesnake training, etc) and they have always accommodated me and my babies- when we have an emergency or just for a regular visit. Rachel is the receptionist who is also outstanding- so knowledgeable even at the front desk for all my questions haha! They know me by name when I call and know my pets and their histories.. I was trying to get a price on a spay for a cat. Prices in the area varied from $250-$400. Incredibly RUDE receptionist wouldn't even give a ball park. Yes I understand that you cannot give me an exact price. Didn't need it written in blood, but trying to get an idea. There is literally a little button in your computer that can tell you the price. If not, you are just making it up as you go which is shady af. I spend a lot of money on my pets and you lost a customer for life. read more

**UPDATE** I see these glowing ratings and I am happy others didn't have to deal with the trauma that my poor cat, "Jinxie" went through when she was prepped for surgery during a simple "Boarding" stay! I have since found out that indeed my cat would have already been put under anesthesia,and then shaved before opening her abdomen for a "spay surgery!!" A spay surgery when she had already been spayed! My review gives all the details about what happened. Even after putting my cat through this and withholding food and water both before and after this horrible mistake,a mistake that could have cost my cat her life, I was never, (not even after knowing what he had done),contacted by this Veterinarian and given a simple apology! I only received a very angry apathetic call from a tech,who admitted they had become a bit complacent about "routine procedures" such as spaying and that's why the mistake occurred in the first place. My already anxious cat was only there to be boarded and would be given attention and love.That's the line I was fed! I believed them. Unbelievable that they could confuse a pet being boarded,and start spaying her instead! But I still had to pay a boarding fee,even though my cat wasn't fed or given water. She wasn't given any attention. She had been placed in the "sick" area with other dogs and cats awaiting surgery and then in recovery. She had only been placed in the boarding area a few hours before I arrived to pick her up! I had to sit in an empty waiting room,while the confused staff ran to the back,trying to clean her up and cover their tracks. I waited for a good 30 minutes, listening to my cat crying,while they were obviously scrambling to decide what to say to me,to get my money and get me out of their office. I had to pay her "boarding" fees before they would even open that door and let me see her! To this day, I have never received a call or letter, nothing from wonderful Dr.Matt to just say "I'm sorry this happened..!" That's something that I would have at least respected. But, that was way beyond what he was willing to do. So,when I see these 5 star reviews from other pet parents,I am just glad that in their situation, their pet,didn't go through what my sweet girl did. Dr. Matt and his staff are by far the BEST vet clinic in the area. I had a tragic experience at Hillcountry Animal hospital several years back and then frankly felt ripped off by Caring Hands animal clinic. Paleface vet was recommended to me by a friend and it was the best decision I could have made for my furry babies. We sadly had to put down our beloved 13 year old shar pei and Dr. Matt kindly came to our home to put her down and take her body away. She died peacefully in our home surrounded by a family who loved her terribly. Dr. Matt shed tears with us and that just says something about how caring he is Our two pugs love him and his staff and he just did an excellent job doing a tooth cleaning and extraction from my older pug at HALF the cost of Caring Hands or Westlake Vet. Mister Squeekers is now feeling great and his breath is as fresh as a summer breeze (his breath could have knocked your socks off prior to his cleaning- I was embarassed for the poor little guy). This review is long overdue, but I have to say Paleface is worth the scenic drive. If I could give Dr. Matt Schuessler 10 s, I really would. I come from Cali...and I really had a bias that all vets are crooks. That's the way it is, right?? All vets are out to scam poor, unsuspecting, pet parents who would do/pay anything for their pets. Overcharging is pretty much standard. Well, once I moved here to Austin, I was struggling with finding a vet. Went to Banfield...wrong idea. Talk about big chain, impersonal, sucky and overpriced service...again. Is this really the only way? My neighbors referred me to their vet...Paleface Vet. And I've never looked back. After the first few visits, I knew that Dr. Matt was different, and for sure a keeper. He just truly has genuine love and concern for your pets. Sure...he could make a ton more money off of you by recommending services you don't really need but does he? NO!! Plus, I've even worked with him before by telling him that I couldn't afford more than a certain amount and he worked with my budget. He never forced anything on me with the "my way or the highway" approach. I just cannot say enough great things about Dr. Matt. I truly appreciate his care of my fur babies and recommend him highly to everyone with pets. I took my furbaby Cookie Nicole to Matt in January with 2 tumors in her belly and he said he could remove them and we should spade her while there so we believed in Matt because we had taken all our pets there for years. When i came back to get her she was weak and i saw blood and told them they said dont worry but when i got home there was allot of blood so i called them and was told if it gets worse bring her in the morning , I told them her gums were white and took her back they wrapped her abdomen and said keep an eye on her . We contacted them to see if it was cancer but NOBODY would answer us . Our baby recovered and we called several times asking Matt to let us know if it was cancer but he never did. Then in June she got 2 more tumors so we figured if it was cancer Matt would surely tell us so we took her back and he said he would have to remove them again and you can see the condition he returned her to me and nobody would still tell us if it was cancer. I felt a stiche they forgot and called to get it removed but was told it was a dissolveable stiche , I called 2 weeks later and told it could take 3 months 1 week later i went to his office and still nobody looked at her even though she was right there and I was told by the lady at the reception it will dissolve so I went home and removed it myself and it was ROCK HARD ( not dissolving !) But 2 months later she was having trouble breathing so we took her to Hope Clinic , they took 350cc of fluid from her abdomen and checked it out telling us she had ADENOCARCINOMA an aggressive terminal cancer and gave her 1 week ! I call Paleface Vet and asked for Matt to contact me to help me understand how this happened , but he wasn't man enough to call me but he did contact the Hope Clinic letting them know HE KNEW!!! We had to put Cookie Nicole to sleep and stop her suffering. Now he is still sending me bills thinking I will pay him for TORTURING my baby he knew it was adenocarcinoma after ther first surgery and that the second surgery was useless to help her. Such a great first experience with Dr. Scheussler. They got us in very quickly when my dog developed a GI infection and treated him so well. I have a lot of anxiety about vets after some previous experiences elsewhere, and definitely helped restore my faith today. Dr was very compassionate, took the time to explain what procedures he was going to do and why, and didn't do more than was necessary-while still being very thorough! I thought my elderly dog had a foot injury and tried treating myself, she was getting worse. I called to see if I could get her in, thanks to the sweet gal that answered the phone squeezed my girl in for appt. Dr determined she has a bad spine. She had quit eating and I thought it was the end. Dr put her on anti inflammatory and within hours, she showed signs of improvement. Thank you Paleface Vet! So very, very grateful! I recently took my daughter's sick cat (Missy) to Paleface because they operated on her a few years ago and was happy with their work. So even though I moved to Dripping Springs I felt good about going back there for help. The Cat wouldn't eat or drink water was dehydrated and lifeless just laid there. The doctor examined her and said she lost two pounds since her last visit and suggested an I V with his solution along with a B-12 Shot. I took Missy home and over the weekend she started coming around after three days she's now back to her normal self; playful eating and drinking lots of water without vomiting anymore. So In the future I will go back here again if needed an I hope this helps you if you need a good vet doctor. read more

This no-nonsense vet is a great fit for our family. We have been using Paleface Vet Clinic for over a year and with a 13yo and 1yo dog we've see quite a bit of them this past year. Dr Matt and Staff have been our vet for close to 10 years. They have been wonderful in caring for our dogs over all these years. When the time came to make the decision to have our oldest dog Speedy put down due to Cushing disease, Dr Matt was there to answer every question and help us through it. The whole staff was with Speedy ( who loved them all) to make sure he was comfortable and unafraid. They were very compassionate and supportive to me afterwards in coping with this loss. Yes!!!! Dr. Bennett knows his Job, and Patients!!!! Very very professional Doctor!!!! But if you're not family, or a "Established" Patient, they will not go out of their way too help you!!! It's pretty sad!!! They're very rude, as in a friend of mine went in back in January & was treated rudely by the "Morning" front desk girl! As she & the "Head" Tech continued talking about their weekends, while using foul language! They didn't care if we were waiting or not!!! My friend & her daughter had driven from their lake house in Horseshoe Bay with her daughter, which is a good drive, but normally stay in Lake Travis.... They defiantly need too clean up shop & hire employees who are their for our Animals, & not for a little check!!!! Because my friend & her daughter said, they couldn't pay the morning girl too get up out of her seat too ask a question!!!! My friend called back that afternoon, I guess another girl works, and she was beyond courteous, & helpful!!!!! Maybe if they get serious about their business & quit hiring young employees, so they don't have too pay them much, then the community will take them more serious!!! I brought my cat in for an injury to her paw. They got her in right away and did a great job with calming her and treating her. Paid for the service right away. About a month later my other cat disappeared for 5 days, returned and was laying on the porch obviously injured. Didnt have the money to pay for him to get checked. Called to see if they would look at him and I would set up some kind of payment agreement. I had been there before. They said no and that was it. So much for my new vet. We ended up getting a care credit card just for a month to get this cat some help. They dont take care credit, but I found an awesome new vet: aka austin vet hospital that did. Took 2 days. I wouldn't take my little ones to anyone but Dr. Matt!! He's been our vet since before he moved out to Spicewood; we would actually drive all the way to Marble Falls from Oak Hill to see him. Over the years we've had to have two dogs put down (one for illness, the other for old age) and Dr. Matt and his team were very caring and gentle with both of them. We still have two dogs that go to Paleface both for care and for boarding. I can't give them enough stars. Don't go here unless you want your pet to be misdiagnosed and die. They will give you the wrong diagnosis and then not take responsibility when your pet ends up dead under their care. Then when you ask to speak to the vet the staff is extremely rude and has the nerve to say the vet is busy and when you try to set up an appointment to speak with the vet they say "you can only make an appointment if you have a pet." read more

I could not be happier with paleface vet clinic. I have called them several times in the last year in regards to my dogchild, Howzer, who is nearing end of life, at almost 15. I usually get the same person on the phone when I call and I wish I had her name but she is so helpful, informative, and caring. Do not go here!!!! on Friday I took my 12 week old puppy to Paleface Vet clinic because he wasn't eating or drinking. They told me he had hook worms and gave him a vaccine and sent home oral medication and told me he will survive and sent me and my puppy home. The whole visit was very uncomfortable. All of the staff was very young in their early 20s and very unprofessional. And as a professional, business owning 21 year old I feel as though some extra training could be implemented for their rude staff. But that's besides the point. The instructions they sent me home with were give Norman the oral medication an hour after I left the vets office and so I did. He immediately threw it up. Concerned I called but they were closed (it was 6 pm) so I called a 24 hour vet and they said they really couldn't advise against another vets word and all I can do is call when they opened the next day. A few hours later I had to hold my dog as he was shaking and coughing and trying desperately to hold onto life but he couldn't. He passed away and I had to drive to the 24 hour vet and pay 75 dollars to have him cremated. I went to Paleface vet clinic today, Monday when they reopened and asked to be reimbursed because nothing they did helped my dog. They shrugged me off because I am young and think they can take advantage of me. They refuse to reimburse me for the $160 dollar appointment and medication nor the $75 dollar cremation fee. They basically sent Norman home with a bandaid and made me watch him die. Horrible rude staff and horrible unethical vet. read more

Dr. Matt and staff are nothing short of extraordinary. I took Happy (a 15 yr old springer) in today because I thought he was dying. He may be (aren't we all?) but I found a genuine doc that did a thorough exam and evaluation of Happy. He set my mind at ease with a kind and gentle way of explaining to me the issues that faced Happy. Unlike PetSmart, we didn't have to drop our sick dog off all day to sit in a cage until they finally got around to seeing him. I love to go to any doctors office where you can joke around and laugh. We took our cat Chester to Dr. Matt when he was going down hill quickly and we had to have him put down. Dr. Matt hugged us and was very caring and concerned even though he hardly knew Chester for long. They took very good care of him and kept him until my husband could get here in the weekend for his burial. We have also taken our year old Aussie Titan to Dr. Matt since he was 8 weeks old. This is a friendly, laid back, and top quality vet clinic. THe staff is great, but the best part of all is the owner, Dr. Matt. He is an extremely knowledgeable vet, but beyond that he is just a great guy who genuinely cares about his "patients" (and their owners).
