Over dinner the other night I had a discussion with my sister about how my taste in movies can best be described as comically bleak or unbearably tragic. I don't feel that I am alone in having this taste in cinema. In fact, I know I am not. The Palace Cinemas Centro plays a wide range films that suit my taste, from foreign films to art films; as well as those great movies that somehow make it to the mainstream. The Palace Cinema Centro is a marvelous venue with excellent comfortable seating and an interesting array of goodies available at the candy bar. From memory, they actually sell that sensational Connoisseur's ice cream, which goes down a treat while watching a great actress breakdown on the big screen. Furthermore, The Place Cinema Centro is a licensed venue so you big kids out there can enjoy a tasty white wine with your movie, like so many of us do at home. Please note that The Palace Cinema's Centro also plays older classic films occasionally. I recall going there earlier this year to watch Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece Lolita. Let me say it was so rewarding seeing films of this caliber played on the big screen. Films like this warrant the grandeur that only a cinema can provide. So, you movie buffs out there should definitely keep an eye on their website to see if one of your all-time favorite films is coming to The Palace Centro anytime soon. In short, if you're a little disappointed by the films offered at the mainstream cinemas you should head down to James St and see something at The Palace Centro. It really is worth the journey.

If you want a cinema that offers a more relaxed atmosphere then fighting against huge crowds then this is the cinema for you. Perfect for a date with popcorn and wine (licensed bar). Set in a funky architectural designed building, you will be welcomed at the top of the stairs to helpful and friendly staff. They are a smaller cinema with a combination of mainstream movies, that do not play that often. Make sure you call or sign up online to receive the timetable

Fabulous venue, alcohol, coffee and really comfy seating. Right in the James Street precinct. Only the best movies. And just so local

Finally, this month the rumours came true and the old Village Twin reopened as the New Farm Cinema. Almost smack bang in the middle of the drive down Brunswick Street, the cinemas are located amongst some great dining options making it a grand night out for a true dinner and a movie date. I visited the cinema on Friday evening, their first official day of trade, and while there were some minor system glitches (it's their opening day guys, let's give them some slack), it was a calm and pleasant atmosphere. While there's only the Purple Room up and running at present, the remaining cinemas will open in short succession. The owners have paid respect to the cinema's heyday by seemingly effortlessly combining the old (the carpet remains the same) and beautiful modern Danish-inspired furniture pieces. Surprisingly - it all works. It's an elegant and vibrant place to enjoy a wine pre-movie or indulge in gelato from La Marcelleria and a brownie from Dello Mano. Prices are reasonable and worth it for the experience alone. The cinema itself is luxurious. Leather seats make it a comfortable viewing experience, and for the more adventurous there's the bean bags at the front of the cinema. It's only early days but their yearly membership is calling my name. Who wouldn't love a Saturday morning pastry from Chouquette before casually strolling across the road for a movie?

Thankfully the Sourris brothers decided to take over the old Village Twin cinemas (which was designed by Ron Monsborough - considered Australia's most acclaimed cinema architect), to breathe new life to the heritage listed building, in New Farm. Its been around since 1921 & closed its doors in 2001. This building was considered by many to be Monsborough's "masterpiece", so the Sourris brothers have mostly stuck to the original design & look. Purple carpet, purple seats, purple curtains. We were here for the official opening (back in late July 2014) and have returned several times since. Enjoy it so much that we decided to become a purple club member for only $16.50 for the year, which then allows you to watch any movie any day for $9.50. When you become a member, you also get a complimentary movie ticket for 1 (valid for one month). Just recently, New Farm Cinemas opened their Gold Room cinema, which is their premium cinema with full service food & drinks to your seat. As a member, you will have a discount on your gold room ticket. If you come early enough before your film, you must try one of the delicious gourmet pizzas that are named after movies. We decided to try the 'La Dolce Vita' which had a beautiful tomato base, spicy Calabrese salami, black olives, & mozzarella. It went perfectly with our "the artisan coffee roaster" macchiato. They have a great selection of snacks, hot food, drinks & Dello Mano chocolate. Although there's no designated parking lot for patrons, there are plenty of street parking, around the cinemas. Check out their website, to see which streets are the best for parking. One of our favourite Cinemas in Brisbane.

In several areas the carpet is worn right through to the concrete, which gives the whole place a neglected feel. Cinema 5's screen is hopelessly underwhelming for this day and age, and the air conditioning barely seems to function. As some online reviewers have also pointed out, the experience just doesn't match modern standards or live up to the falsely advertised promise of a luxury experience. It's in a great location, with friendly staff, but it's clearly time for major refurbishment and maybe new owners/management at the same time.

The chairs are very comfy as everyone has mentioned. Even though the theatre size is much smaller than your typical ones like in South Bank, I really liked it. If you live in the area, purchasing a membership would be worth it. The movies being shown were a mix of unique and blockbuster. I liked the waiting area where I could pick up several brochures or magazines while I wait on my friend to arrive. They were kind when I went to pick up my tickets and had no problems there. They had plenty of candy, popcorn, and ice cream behind the counter. You can also purchase adult beverages as well! I had a great experience and think this would be a great place to take a date! If your date isn't too familiar with Brisbane, showing off this part of town and taking a walk along the river before the film would be so sweet.
