People go to the cinema for a variety of different reasons, whether it's to stave of boredom for a few hours, get out of the heat or avoid having to make conversation on a first date. To most, the only real decision to be made is what film to see. The venue generally chooses itself through a convenient session time or location. After all, how different can two dark, air-conditioned auditoriums be? To those people i say - different enough. In the interest of full disclosure I worked for five years at my local cinema and over that time developed an appreciation for the little things that make a movie theatre unique. So it was with a trained eye that I entered the foyer of Balmoral Cinemas in the trendy South Brisbane hotspot of Oxford St. My first impression was a positive one as it had two of the key hallmarks synonymous with older cinemas. Dark, hideously ugly carpet designed to hide a decade's worth of squashed chocolate and vomit and a ticket box that was quite literally, a box. Being a Thursday night there was a healthy crowd in line to see that week's new releases but thanks to the way in which the ticket box operated autonomously from candy bar (a practice abandoned by the bigger chains in the search of greater profits) the line moved swiftly. At $8.50 my adult ticket was considerably cheaper than i had been known to pay elsewhere and left me with a little more breathing room for candy bar expenses. Their selection of movie munchies was good without being extensive and i was a little disappointed to find there was no mixed lolly section. I approached the ushers podium with ticket in hand and a conciliatory bag of Allen's lollies tucked under my arm and was glad to see it was attended. After paying for a full priced ticket there is nothing more deflating than seeing a group of fourteen year old boys walking straight into a session of SAW XII without a ticket between them. The usher passed the litmus test and actually ushered, offering precise directions to my cinema and was even engaged enough to let me know he had seen my chosen film and I was making a good choice. The cinema itself was sloped rather than tiered and there was quite a bit of room between rows. For someone with long limbs this allowed the rare luxury of being able to extend myself fully throughout the film. The trailers and commercials before the feature went for a total of seventeen minutes and the ratio between the two was perhaps a little commercial heavy. The sound levels during the feature were consistent and not too loud and the film quality was good with no obvious scratches. Overall, Balmoral was a refreshingly old school cinema of genuine quality. Should the opportunity arise I would not hesitate to cross the river from my north side address to see a movie there again. As long as that movie was not Sex and the City 3.

Everyone came dressed up and we were treated to a nice glass of prosecco as if we were back in the 1920s at a party hosted by Gatsby himself. They went all out for this premiere with a bess dressed contest, fashion show, Yelp photo booth, and rafffled away some great prizes. When it was time for the movie, we all shuffled into the theatre and were welcome to an intimate theatre with super comfy seats. We were greeted by the friendly staff who informed us of the next premiere. I liked how they informed us that there would only be one preview before the feature started. I felt so comfortable and enjoyed the screening very much. Most reviews note how uncrowded the theatre usually is. The premiere was sold out on this particular evening but I really enjoyed seeing all the enthusiasm for a Thursday evening premiere. You can order popcorn and soft drinks but they also have wine, choc tops, and cheese platters on the menu!! Can't wait to go back here again.

Finally, this month the rumours came true and the old Village Twin reopened as the New Farm Cinema. Almost smack bang in the middle of the drive down Brunswick Street, the cinemas are located amongst some great dining options making it a grand night out for a true dinner and a movie date. I visited the cinema on Friday evening, their first official day of trade, and while there were some minor system glitches (it's their opening day guys, let's give them some slack), it was a calm and pleasant atmosphere. While there's only the Purple Room up and running at present, the remaining cinemas will open in short succession. The owners have paid respect to the cinema's heyday by seemingly effortlessly combining the old (the carpet remains the same) and beautiful modern Danish-inspired furniture pieces. Surprisingly - it all works. It's an elegant and vibrant place to enjoy a wine pre-movie or indulge in gelato from La Marcelleria and a brownie from Dello Mano. Prices are reasonable and worth it for the experience alone. The cinema itself is luxurious. Leather seats make it a comfortable viewing experience, and for the more adventurous there's the bean bags at the front of the cinema. It's only early days but their yearly membership is calling my name. Who wouldn't love a Saturday morning pastry from Chouquette before casually strolling across the road for a movie?

Thankfully the Sourris brothers decided to take over the old Village Twin cinemas (which was designed by Ron Monsborough - considered Australia's most acclaimed cinema architect), to breathe new life to the heritage listed building, in New Farm. Its been around since 1921 & closed its doors in 2001. This building was considered by many to be Monsborough's "masterpiece", so the Sourris brothers have mostly stuck to the original design & look. Purple carpet, purple seats, purple curtains. We were here for the official opening (back in late July 2014) and have returned several times since. Enjoy it so much that we decided to become a purple club member for only $16.50 for the year, which then allows you to watch any movie any day for $9.50. When you become a member, you also get a complimentary movie ticket for 1 (valid for one month). Just recently, New Farm Cinemas opened their Gold Room cinema, which is their premium cinema with full service food & drinks to your seat. As a member, you will have a discount on your gold room ticket. If you come early enough before your film, you must try one of the delicious gourmet pizzas that are named after movies. We decided to try the 'La Dolce Vita' which had a beautiful tomato base, spicy Calabrese salami, black olives, & mozzarella. It went perfectly with our "the artisan coffee roaster" macchiato. They have a great selection of snacks, hot food, drinks & Dello Mano chocolate. Although there's no designated parking lot for patrons, there are plenty of street parking, around the cinemas. Check out their website, to see which streets are the best for parking. One of our favourite Cinemas in Brisbane.

In several areas the carpet is worn right through to the concrete, which gives the whole place a neglected feel. The chairs are very comfy as everyone has mentioned. Even though the theatre size is much smaller than your typical ones like in South Bank, I really liked it. If you live in the area, purchasing a membership would be worth it. The movies being shown were a mix of unique and blockbuster. I liked the waiting area where I could pick up several brochures or magazines while I wait on my friend to arrive. They were kind when I went to pick up my tickets and had no problems there. They had plenty of candy, popcorn, and ice cream behind the counter. You can also purchase adult beverages as well! I had a great experience and think this would be a great place to take a date! If your date isn't too familiar with Brisbane, showing off this part of town and taking a walk along the river before the film would be so sweet.
