The staff reflect the ethnic diversity of the area and there is little staff turnover which always indicates the business has a genuine positive ethos and that it is a good and fair employer. It's a busy shop and yet you don't have to wait long. Whatever, its always worth it. If you need advice with how to cook the meat they are always willing to help. The meat is hanging behind a glass sliding doors and at the front window the meat is laid out like an artistic mosaic of cuts. You can tells it's still a butchers though, the doggies of Stokie can confirm. As they walk past, their leads pull and noses dampen with excitement. They have a small selection of cheese and drinks and at the back they have a great wine room. It's all set up for tastings so it'll be great to see what they decide to do events wise over the next few months. There is a large outside space so if they use that, this will be a bit of a foodie mecca. I love the fact that the wine is split up so you can pair it easily with your meats. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

The shop doesn't look like much, but the fishmongers are friendly and I feel welcome whenever I walk into the shop. At times the selection is a bit limited, but everything I've tried has tasted as if it's right off the boat. Plus the prices are good, often cheaper than the big grocers. I love salmon and their salmon is so fresh that I can cook several filets and the kitchen is free of that fishy stench that often accompanies fish purchased at the grocery story. So, it passes the freshness test, which is why I often buy my fish there.

They're incredibly well stocked and knowledgable with produce from all corners of the world. They're not poncey or crazily overpriced (I'm talking about you Meat N16). They're welcoming and encouraging and they've inspired me to try cooking all sorts of bigger cuts of meat as well as answering all my novice questions. We've made rabbit ragu with meat from Baldwins as well as squab pigeon with cherry sauce, herb crusted lamb, Sunday beef joints, lamb shoulder rogan josh, duck liver pate, turkey mole (with a whole jointed turkey which served an entire Mexican Christmas party) and baby back ribs to serve 7. We had to buy an especially big pan for those. They also sell cheap organic free range eggs, award winning manchego cheese, loads of delicious looking Parma hams and chorizo as well as good store cupboard essentials (the tomato purée in the red tin with the swan on is lovely) and special treats like panettone. I like to remind myself of this fact and also, I like the variety of ways you can order your carcass at halal butchers, Kingsland Butchers. The first time I came to buy real chicken (as opposed to rinsed out, bleached white chicken from the supermarket) I was a bit green about the whole thing, I assumed that when I asked for my chicken to be cut up, the butcher would intuitively know what I meant. Not so, it seems there are not only many ways to skin a cat, but also many ways to hack up a chicken. Hacking was his preferred method, bones, skin and all. Next time, I came prepared, with my sister. She expertly asked the butcher to skin the chicken and separate it into wings, breasts and thighs, the way nature intended it to be. What a revelation: not only did the butcher do it, he seemed to really relish the challenge, it was very enjoyable to watch considering that I need a strong drink before touching wobbly, gross, raw meat. All the stall holders and shop owners at Ridley Road Market are up for a laugh and coming here is much more fun than the weekly Salisbury's run.

Today I found Frank Godfrey Ltd, a butcher shop. Up until today, I would always go to Upper Street but today I found a beautiful local butcher and it's clear the community loves it because it was packed. When I walked into Frank Godfrey it smelled like cooking meat. I could have stayed all day just looking at the meat and enjoying the aroma. Since the shop was crowded I had several minutes to look at the meat and figure out what I wanted. The counter staff was friendly and eager to make suggestions. When I left with my purchases I couldn't wait to get home and cook them up! I am pleased to announce that I have found a new butcher and what can I say....it's amazing!
