This review forms part of the Legendary Mini-Break of the Sisterhood....aka Angie And Fiona Do…read moreYorkshire....aka The 'Win'kend. Having strutted my leggy, longhaired sibling around Sky Lounge on Thursday like a prize show pony, I decided to stick her hungover ass in the back of the car and whisk her to the secret waterfall in the Dales that I can't tell you about because then it wont be my secret any more (you're not squeezing THIS one out of me Yelp!!). I skinnydipped Fiona's delicate Southern backside in freezingly fresh water, stuffed a buttery picnic into her and sat her in a local pub for some wincingly bad white wine and then I left her in the capable hands of a man date to Chaophraya. The 'Win'kend was exceeding all expectations. Then on Saturday I washed her, dressed her, brushed her pretty teeth, hung some Best in Show rosettes in her glossy mane and flung her into the heart of York to buy Cath Kidston dresses and overpriced picture frames. It was during this extended bonding session that we stumbled upon, and thus into, Oscar's. May I start by miming the rubbing of hands over walls and saying that thing I often say, much to the bemusement of most of my friends, "Lovely wallpaper!!". You just can't have enough tropical birds on big red flowers. I'm not being sarcastic. I genuinely have a remote sex button that gets pressed by the sight of interesting wallpaper...which I then sit by and bang on about ad infinitum, ad nauseum, all the time stroking said paper like a 100% proper sausage of a human being. Oscar's has wallpaper for the win. It also has a nice range of ales, wines and fruit beers....a strawberry fruli later and I was ready to mezze things up a notch. We plumped for mixed olives and a mediterranean platter which, at £4 and £8 respectively provided ample piles of slippery olives, rich taramasalata, thick hummus, cool tzatsiki, salad and warm flatbread for three of us. There's olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the tables to extend the bread life into some proper dipping. It was fresh, flavoursome and tasty. We even got more bread to finish off the dips, that's how dipalicious it was. So why only 3 stars? Lovely looking bar. Clean and well stocked with interesting and wide choices of drinks and food. Utterly FAB-U-LOUS wallpaper. Pleasant toilets....I could go on. But there's the one thing isn't there that just scoots you down the ratings faster than a wet rat in a slimy pipe. Customer service. Yes the staff were all achingly polite. Most were fabulous looking. There were more than enough of them to go around. But. Every single damn time we wanted something we had to play the staring game. Staring politely. Staring more urgently. Turning around in chairs and staring. Sighing and staring. Having that conversation about when is the right time to just shout 'Excuse me!' at the 10th waitress to walk directly past your table whilst earning an Olympic Gold (see what I did there) for deliberately avoiding meeting your eye despite being close enough to see right into your wanting soul. Watching huddles of said staff engaged in exciting looking conversations about last night in the corners of the bar with their backs turned to the entire dining contigent was really the final straw. "EXCUUUUUUUSE MEEEEEE!" Pah. Not good enough. Oscar's salvages the 2 points for looking lovely, being comfortable and having tasty grub at a good price but having worked in bars and restaurants from the age of 14-25 nothing irks me more than being deliberately ignored. If you are being paid to wait then no customer should be left wanting, whether they are your 'service' or not. Scuttling past diners with your eyes on the floor is downright lazy and turning your back on them to chat with your bessie mate for 10 minutes is downright unacceptable. If I could manage to wait tables efficiently at 14 Oscar's then your proper grown up staff can manage it now. Rant over...but never out! MWAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA!

We happened to be walking by this new picturesque small restaurant on Bridge Street and decided to…read morebook in for dinner later that week based on the delightful interior, delicious-sounding menu, and wine list. The food & experience did not disappoint. My friends and I had the fried zucchini flowers, doughballs with serrano ham & soft cheese to start and shared one of the specials, the summer truffle gnocchi in cheese sauce. It blew me away, the best gnocchi I've ever had. And Georgia our thoughtful hostess and co-owner brought us some amazing focaccia for the rest of that sauce. She could have brought us a brick for our second plates and we would have been happy, but our main dishes of veal chop with porcini mushrooms, octopus and potatoes, zucchini flan, and a side of fried polenta chips were also exceptional. I cannot rave about the food enough. A small menu done exquisitely well. You can tell the owners care about their customers and the quality of their food and wines. Nothing was overdone or overwrought, just simple Italian dishes done perfectly. Georgia was very kind throughout, providing us with a tasting of desert wines after they were out of the one we had wanted. She orders them from friends and suppliers in Italy and has a truly remarkable selection. Georgia and her partner Joe the chef lived in Florence and have spent time with his family in Calabria. At L'uva they have imported that love of food and friendly atmosphere to Yorkshire directly from Italy. Throughout we felt like we were dining with friends excited to cook for us and share their tables, the atmosphere reminded me of small family-run places in Italy. My friends and I have spent a lot of time in Italy over the years and this was as authentic as the Italian folks who came in after us. There is nothing else like it in York and we will certainly be back. Thank you Georgia & Joe for a wonderful dinner!

Wilde's Bar & Bistro - Steak!

££

A very middle of the road, solid 3-star restaurant. Neither great nor poor…read more My better half and I almost walked right past this place as it was down a small alley and had very attractive restaurants on either side. However, there was a £27 Tuesday special on for 2 steak dinners with a bottle of wine. And I am a sucker for steak. And wine. So yea... Plus it happened to be a Tuesday so I saw it as a sign. Anyway, we walked in and weren't greeted (there were only 2 other couples there) until we sat ourselves down in a cheerful, almost Spanish looking room. The restaurant looks tiny but if you make your way through it's thin corridor-like entrance, there appear two more sections, each with a different feel. The back room is candle-lit with lots of tables while the front bar-area is more casual and relaxed. The upstairs has a glass ceiling and a nice continental feel. Almost moved up there! So we ordered our sirloin which came with onion rings, chips, a small salad, and mushrooms. The steak was good. My boyfriends was perfectly rare and mine was medium rare on the dot. However, the waitress mixed up our orders. It's a good thing we realized it after a single bite. Our tables were sticky which was disappointing. I moved right before we were served rather than complain and the table in the back was sticky/crumby too. The staff was so lovely and friendly though (dealing with my seat changing) that I again didn't say anything. The website describes it as 'Parisian' and 'a slice of Europe' in line with the kind of places Oscar Wilde would frequent. I am unconvinced. The rest of the food options were eclectic ranging from Mexican to Greek to American. A nice assortment if you want to try it. I don't know if I'd come again given all of York's tantalizing eateries. But my steak was nice.

Stopped in Wilde's for a cheeky lunch with the big sis on Monday. She was flying to Vienna the next…read moreday and I hadn't seen her since November 2008! So seemed like a good opportunity to skip the usual Monday duties and hang out a little. We didn't really plan to go to Wilde's but it was there and looked friendly from the outside so dropped in. On the inside it was bright and clean with fresh tulips on the tables and a great open sun room upstairs. The food was plentiful fresh and appetising. Although, hmm, I ordered a Ceasar salad and I don't think it had any of the ingredients you'd usually associate with a Caesar salad, no romaine lettuce, no Parmesan, no lemon and very little dressing. What I did get was a mixed green salad with chicken, cherry tomatoes, salty bacon and croutons and it was rather good! I ate enjoyed, and felt very satisfied afterwards. Overall I cant fault Wilde's, it was a good lunch. I enjoyed seeing big sis, I enjoyed the salad and the coffee too. Oh! and extra points for the mad wallpaper in the bathooms! Brilliant :-)
