Another place I can't believe I haven't reviewed…read more I want to say my first visit here was in 2016. At the time I lived in Columbus and was in the Ironton/Portsmouth area to see family and had randomly found this spot at the mall. Over the years I had visited both locations mall and the downtown Ashland location shortly after it opened. It's been a few years since I've been in as I now live 4.5 hours away compared to 2.5, but was in the area on Wednesday. I had stopped in and browsed and was even more impressed with my finds this trip in addition to what I've found over the years. They have everything from Kenner Star Wars to Han Soloflex POTF 90s Star Wars to MOTU to Thundercats to Power Rangers to Strawberry Shortcake & Movie Maniacs. Staff is great and prices are fair. Definitely another spot I always try to hit in the area.

I went to this store initially looking to buy Dungeons and Dragons books and miniatures, and to see…read moreif they had a local Dungeons and Dragons play groups that I could join. This was around January of 2026, and at the time they were running Magic the Gathering card play tournaments with Zero Dungeons and Dragons books or miniatures in stock. But the Store owner Andy said they had previous D&D group building attempts at his store Location, but the Dungeon Masters either were overwhelmed or just did not have the time to be a steady long-term DM (Dungeon Master). Andy Told me he would advertise for players for me on his business web site if I would be interested in being a long-term DM. I told Andy sure; I would give it a shot that I was looking for 4 to 6 players in a steady in-person play group at his store. I asked Andy what my space rental price would be, and he said nothing, that he would be glad to have the client/player traffic to his store and if enough D&D players came regularly that he would look into buying and stocking or ordering D&D books and accessories if the interest grew and held par. So, Andy made one post, and I got two people to come initially that grew to four then to 7 players after he posted my request for players a second time three months later. This cost me nothing but my time to be available for the players. Andy had a person to come in and sell several used great condition D&D books to him, and he sold those to me at cost trying to help me grow my group. He has sold and few other D&D pieces to me at a good price that were 3D printed and brought into his store by local printers. One was an awesome dice tower that I bought and I hate dice towers, but it was too cool not to buy. Andy still does not charge me or my players any rental play space time like other game stores do. So, I in turn to help show my appreciation when I go to the Andy's store I pick up and neaten up the store for him as I can always double checking to make sure not to throw away anything that maybe in us or valuable to the store or clientele. I even helped Andy for several hours a couple times during store hours to do store resets. I watched people come into Andy's store trying to sell him used products that were either good condition or pure trash. Andy is always fair and upfront in his pricing to buy the product and tells the folks what they could sell it for themselves online or at yard sales or what have you. Or if it is worn out or just to pour of a condition to buy to resell the reasons why. I watched a guy try and pull a scam on Andy and being a retired police officer I called it out on the spot keeping Andy from being scammed, and several people to come in with junk that needs tossed in the recycle bin or trash asking top dollar for it. Andy just refuses the purchase, and they get mad, walk outside the store and stand and post negative reviews. Look I would not buy a tire at a tire store that has holes in it expecting it to hold air or even to resell it, so don't bring in your trash expecting a pay day (Know its condition and value beforehand). Lastly Andy still allows me to hold my D&D games on Saturday mornings and makes sure he gets to the store Saturday morning or has a key holder there for me to hold my game sessions. Andy also is extremely laid back letting you to come in and shop without the "Used Car Salesperson" pressure. His approach is if you find what you like then to let him know and work out your deal. I watched more folks than not to get deals when they make the attempt to ask. And most recently Andy has told me that he can order any D&D book or miniature or accessory from a retailer and get it for me, I just have to pay ahead of ordering because it is not what he stocks and sells in his store (A very rational and respected policy, Andy could just say no). I think this is an awesome man with a big heart that hosts a great local clientele but refuses to be ripped off or scammed or pays a person that wants full price for an item they want to sell or is complete trash. Going to any car lot or pawn store you will never get full market value for what you are selling or even told what the fair market value is, but Andy is straight up honest about the value and price he can pay you so he can try and resell the item. The man is in business and needs to make a living folks, so take your junk and junk sales reviews with a grain of salt. Honestly, Bill Kiser

I've been in there multiple times when he literally refuses to uphold the return policy that is POSTED on their counters. He offers offensive prices for trade. You know it's bad when you can get a better deal at Gamestop. They usually don't have any worthwhile games or consoles anyway and everything is pretty ratty. The store also always looks dirty, and on multiple occasions I've gone there and the weren't open (almost an hour after the posted time) I could seriously go on forever. It's a shame because that store used to be cool.

You can definitely see the effects of the shrinking population size as well. There are currently three local games stores in the area, this being one of them. It's the oldest of the stores in the area and has been around quite a while. Despite this long-term experience, there is still a lot to be desired from this location. They only have one staff member, the manager, who knows remotely anything about Magic the Gathering. If you want to sell cards, you have to catch JB while he's there or just come back another time. They aren't firing any events currently, either. Everyone has migrated to The Board Room. They aren't really doing much at all outside of being present and selling product as far as I know. There used to be an Adventurer's League for D&D, which has been dead for a while, the Magic scene has fled the store entirely, it's just mostly barren these days. The store is almost always dirty, and unless JB is present good luck getting anyone to give you the time of day. The good and middle of the road part is that JB is a great guy, good at customer service, and their selection is almost always solid. They offer fair pricing on Magic singles, doing both cash and credit as options. Compared to The Board Room, their pricing on product is also a lot better, as TBR has their packs marked up by quite a bit higher than average for current Standard sets. They have an account system these days to track store credit, which is nice. They lost an employee to the aforementioned competitor, The Board Room, and I truly think this is a sign of the end for this business. As far as I can tell, he was the only thing really holding them together as far as any form of organized play goes. The entire Magic crowd followed him out the door. So, TLDR it's a good place to go and buy/sell Magic singles, or look for other stuff to buy like board games, minis, comics, etc without having to deal with the odd markups, but if you're looking to actually play something here, then good luck. I'd at least recommend it over Pair-A-Dice in St. Albans, even if they are firing events.
