With my first child I had a midwife and everything was fine. With my second I had an ob (Dr. Pae) who'd been recommended to me, and who basically smirked at my birthing plan, which directed no episiotomy and to allow the placenta to detach naturally over time. I was a young mom, but I always did my research.
As cleanup was occurring after her birth and a nurse was massaging my abdomen, the doctor casually walked by and with no warning, yanked on the umbilical cord -- hard. I felt it rip tissue from my uterine walls on the inside. I was livid and I don't recall what I said to him but he walked out knowing I was displeased. I felt totally violated and pissed knowing he didn't even bother to know or respect my own directives as a patient. Three days later, at home alone with a four year old and a nursing newborn, I had a high fever and was about to pass out. When I went in to be examined, sure enough. I had an infection from placenta that hadn't detached properly and which was basically rotting inside me.
I wish I'd sued him. This was 15 years ago but it came to mind because of an article about how doctors abuse laboring/post partum mothers. The Wheaton-Franciscan website has him listed at 4.9 out of 5 from "random surveys" that they are able to selectively screen. I came here to Yelp to hopefully get some information to others before they select him as their caregiver. read more
