If Alice of Wonderland fame had fallen down the rabbit hole into this place, she never would have gotten out. The store is a maze of aisles with seemingly no order at all. Paths between merchandise veer off unexpectedly, making it a bit of a 'choose your own adventure' type experience. You never know what you'll find but if you go the wrong way you'll struggle to find your way back. When I entered the store I expected something like Bunnings (probably the only hardware store I've ever been to) with its lofty ceilings and manicured aisles. I was surprised at the low-ceilinged but deceptively large shop that greeted me. Apart from the ceiling height difference, this place sold everything any other hardware store does. Each section also had its own information desk, with a staff member waiting patiently for customers with queries. I kept arriving at 'clearings' to find an eager shop assistant gazing anxiously at me as I tried to back away while maintaining eye contact. The odd mix of charming, maze-like layout, head ducking and exceptional customer service combine to make this a place I would highly recommend. read more

Before entering Paddington Hardware, maybe give everyone in your group an air horn or just tether your group together, because you will get lost in this giant warehouse of aisles. On the other hand, I don't mind getting lost in here. It made me remember that hardware stores don't have to be boring. After visiting Mitre 10 and its peers back in the day as a little girl with my father, this is a positive mansion of hardware needs. At first indifferent, I wandered absent-mindedly amongst rows of containers of different types of screws, and I was reminded of my father's workshop. When I was little, Dad's workshop (attached to the house) was out-of-bounds for kids. Of course this meant I snuck in there as often as possible. I used to ooh and ahh over the smell of cut wood, the jars of different sized nails and screws, curly wood shavings on the floor. It felt like being in Santa's workshop. And it also felt like this here. Now, Paddington Hardware isn't Santa's workshop - that I'm aware of. For all I know he could be stuffed in the back, pumping out dinner tables amongst a group of singing elves. The store's that big. I'm somehow sounding sentimental about a hardware store. In spite of its size, though, the staff are so friendly that it contributes to the happy-wonder vibe of the place. From a stock perspective, the scope of hardware is so extensive that I think most handymen would find what they wanted here. As an aside, I came to Paddington Hardware to buy a shower curtain because I was moving out of my rental property and they wanted it replaced. Shower curtains are sneakily expensive. However, Paddington Hardware was the only place in Paddington I could find a shower curtain. It was a damn nice curtain, so I hope the new tenants enjoyed it. A word about parking here: there is on-site parking, but since Paddington Hardware is sandwiched between boutiques and restaurants, it was once packed with cars from non-patrons. However, there is a strict Hardware Parking Only sign on site, and increased security on this front means that legitimate Hardware store customers should be able to find a spot. read more

Screw you Bunnings, I'll take my hardware store with a serious dose of amazing service thank you. I've often gone into Paddington Hardware with only the vaguest idea of what I need, but I walk out with all the essentials plus a half hour tutorial (sometimes with pictures). The shop can seem confronting as, lets face it, it's a maze - but they have so many helpful staff it's not a problem. Considering I'm so inexperienced that I just try and find someone to help me automatically it all works out for me. read more

It's housed in a weathered old Queensland-style shop and full of fragrant timber and kindly, helpful men who seem to know the answer to any question you might have. Paddington Hardware is basically a one-stop hardware store: you won't find anything at Bunnings that you couldn't get here and it's always good to support local businesses. Especially ones as longstanding as Paddington Hardware. As well as your run of the mill hardware needs, Paddington Hardware specialises in Queenslanders. If you need a particular fitting or fixture to replace something old but want something that won't look weirdly modern in your old house, they'll be able to help you out. I love looking at their vintage-esque range of doorknobs, brass fittings, and lights. Unlike a lot of hardware stores, there are plenty of staff around and they are all willing to help. I've tortured some of the poor old men at Paddington Hardware for what must have seemed to them like hours on end with my (probably very silly) questions about what I should be buying and how to utilise it. The prices here are very fair and you're getting quality, well-made products. Sometimes they've even made me a deal or thrown something in for free which is lovely. Paddington Hardware is the best and most interesting hardware store in town. read more

When you enter a hardware store wanting a new shower head and leave with a whole list of D.I.Ys and reno ideas you had never imagined, you know the place has had a positive impact on you. At least that is how it went for me. The service is what sets this place apart, that and the 'paddington' specific items that are perfectly suited for the homes in this area. They cater for all your brassware, plumbing, gardening, building and painting needs - actually they cater for everything... The last time I popped into Paddington Hardware I generally knew what I was after and it wasn't until I was asked that I realised I was on the right track, but the friendly assistant broadened my shower fitting horizons and I ended up with a much better finished product than If I had spent hours in a major hardware store, wandering around looking for each small requirement. Old fashioned service is hard to come by these days, but at this iconic hardware store its around every aisle, every paint bucket and every shopper who may look like they know what they are doing, but actually...don't.
