Exchanging US Dollars to Japanese Yen in Honolulu, Hawaii... Yesterday, I called Pacific Money Exchange because my friend wanted to exchange a large amount of cash and get yen at a good rate. I was told to stop by after 11am. We parked nearby and walked to Royal Hawaiian Avenue, where Pacific Money Exchange is on the ground floor of a multi-level building. The two ladies working at the window were friendly and had the correct amount of yen ready - under my name and phone number. My friend showed her ID, gave them her Social Security Number, and was satisfied with the transaction. On 11-28-23, the rate was 143¥ for a dollar. I'll check the rate later on, compare with my bank, and will probably return!

Money does buy happiness... It's incredible to hear and see how many have made trips to Japan these past few months...could it be due to the insane rates happening now, possibly though it's one of my dream destination planned or not when it's a great rate I do purchase some whenever possible...and it's the best place to do so. Located on Royal Hawaiian Avenue right across DFS and yes parking is the real struggle but I did find a loading zone spot I quickly parked and dashed to the window and as of 10.30.23 it was 143 for $1 and NO fees! It's usually difficult to acquire yen as not many is brought in by visitors it's the best to call for availability so that you don't make that unnecessary trip to Waikiki. Ladies here are super nice if you're not in the know and will explain it all for you to familiar yourself with yen but the best price on the island and definitely worth the trip for your trip. Thank you!

Yen in wallet & ready for Japan!

Ask the Community - Pacific Money Exchange

Do they have japanese yen today?

You have to call them and schedule an appointment.

$4000? Do I bring cash or check? Can I come at 1:00?

Cash Only. You have to call to setup an appointment.

What is your yen rate today please?

They never did quote rates over the phone because they have very good competitive rates amongst other places in the area.

Is there a maximum that I can exchange?

If you are exchanging over $500, I suggest you go in person and reserve. Last time we went there (April 2024) there was a wait list that was already closed for the month.

So they do Korean won or only Japanese yen?

Yen only.

Does Pacific Money exchange USD for Chinese Yuan? Is there a minimum amount they will exchange? I only need about $50 for Beijing airport vending machines.

No, they do only Japanese yen

Can I get Mexican pesos?

No, they only have U.S. Dollar and Japanese Yen.

I would like to sell JPY for USD. What is your exchange rate?

They won't give any quotes over the phone, so need to go there in person to find out.

What is the difference between the kamaaina rate and reservation preferred rate? If you get an extra 2 yen per dollar for kamaaina, does the reservation rate (over $1000) give you 3+ yen per dollar?

I'm not sure about the original rate but when I asked about the kamaaina rate and showed them my state ID, the rate was still 4% lower than online.

I have Chinese Yuan. What is the rate of exchange to dollars?

Because exchange rate change constantly, it's best to call the business and ask what is their exchange rate for Yuan.

Does pacific money exchange dollars to Mexican pesos?

No, only Japanese yen

Do they exchange for euros?

No, only Japanese yen

Currency Exchange International is probably the best place to exchange currency for your next trip…read moreabroad or exchange all your foreign monies that's been sitting in your drawer for US Dollars. This isn't a bank or a store. It's a small kiosk located on the first floor in the International Marketplace. It's beside the escalators and across the waterfall. They don't have validation for parking, so you'll need to spend $10 elsewhere for one free hour, or complete your transaction within 15 minutes from getting your parking ticket to the parking payment machine. I switched US dollars to Canadian dollars. If you're Kama'aina, and have your Hawaii ID, the service fee is waived. If not, check in on Yelp for 50% off! Transactions under $500 is a fee of $5 and over is $10. Their rates are really good and better than most banks. Plus, they have the cash on hand, so you can make the exchange right then and there. No need to make an order and wait several days at the bank. But I do recommend calling ahead first to make sure if you need less common currency. The lady helping us was friendly and courteous and helpful. I'd definitely recommend everyone to come here to exchange before your trip. NEVER exchange money at the airport!

My wife sometimes travels to Japan, and since the price of the yen is historically low right now…read morecompared to the U.S. dollar, she wanted to purchase a modest amount of Japanese yen. My first thought was to go to our regular bank, but after briefly thinking about it, I recalled how complicated things can become just to try to use their notary services. Upon checking, I confirmed that even for existing customers, buying a foreign currency may take several business days. Customers must visit a branch and "reserve" yen in advance, with the rate being determined on the day of reservation, and this service may not be available at all branches. I searched for a foreign currency exchange service and Currency Exchange International (CXI) stood out by being conveniently located in the International Market Place in Waikiki. We arrived at the Market Place just before 11 am, and having read a recent review placing them between Macy's and Pieology, I figured that Macy's would be easier to locate than the currency exchange. That's what threw off our search. There didn't appear to be an entrance to Macy's from where we were, so we had to go out to Kalakaua Ave. to reach Macy's, and the exchange was nowhere in sight. I did try to call the number but no one answered, understandable if the only person there was assisting customers. We went back into the Market Place and finally found it near the "Customer Service" sign and next to the escalator, and realized we had passed it before in our search for Macy's. When we reached the window, the gentleman was assisting a couple. I gathered they were purchasing currency by card, and that they were being asked to produce ID. After they received their currency and left, we were next, and I noticed someone else waiting behind us. At the window, I announced that I wanted to purchase Japanese yen and gave him the amount. He asked how I was going to pay, and I said "cash," and it seemed to be a straightforward process from there. He quoted the exchange rate he would be using, how much he would charge me for the currency, and the $5.00 exchange fee. I handed him the cash, and he passed back the Japanese yen and the receipt. Everything was smoothly executed. Later I had time to analyze precisely how the exchange worked. We were openly quoted an exchange rate, and by accepting, we agreed to it. The receipt had this disclaimer: "The exchange rate used for this transaction may vary from other exchange rates in existence globally." Using a rate which is slightly advantageous to the exchange and adding the exchange fee is how the business makes a profit. After comparing against other published rates, my feeling is that this was all worth it, given that we didn't need to make an appointment at a bank, for instance, and wait for them to obtain the currency. What might have taken days and involved an inconvenient location elsewhere was accomplished in a few minutes by going to CXI and paying cash.
