The only reason I didn't give it 5 is because I'm not a fan of oysters and my intention of going was to get breakfast so that was on me. I didn't do any research on the spot and the information given [to me] was sketchy so I didn't know. It was recommended by someone that we go there. I later found out that the recommendation was to go there for coffee specifically. They didn't say anything bad about the food but they were specific about "go here for some really good coffee". They were 100% on point!

My boyfriend ordered the shrimp ceviche for starters, which was excellent. I got the whipped feta with crostinis. The feta was great, the bread they served it with was so hard it could break a tooth. Also, a couple of the pieces were burnt. Our pasta dishes came out next. I got the one with shrimp. The pasta was very gummy and undercooked. His pasta was better. We finished with one of each of the desserts. The lemon lavender tiramisu was excellent, the fancy looking brown sugar butter cake had zero flavor. The ambiance was lovely, the wine was good. Our waitress was great, although it was weird a 20% tip was automatically added to a part of two.

I think because there is a small amount of booths, something about it feels even more like a community. The booths can change throughout the weeks, but some of my top visited ones are Oro Pasta, Agriberry Farm, and Amy's Garden. Live music is played by Bobby Joe Small. He is so friendly and kind! He'll bring a bunch of small instruments and leave them on the ground around him for children to play along. There is a good mix of food options here. I usually am able to do a majority of my grocery shopping for the week at this market. I really love Birdhouse Farmers Market and can't rave enough about it.

Not only are they open during the week, they're open afternoon instead of morning. I know right?! How unusual! I found this smallish market because I was taking the back streets, avoiding some gnarly traffic. It's tucked away behind Byrd house, hidden from everything. In its little grassy lawn, right off the Byrd House garden it's a lot like a little oasis. Parking isn't easy, since it's Oregon Hill near VCU. They say that there's a parking lot open but perhaps I'm blind, I've never noticed it. Nice veggies, friendly people, some artists and performers make for a nice atmosphere. Every week they raffle off a box of CSA veggies for the next week. I've never entered but you gotta admit, it's better odds than the lottery! Great place and great if you couldn't bring yourself to get up early enough for the market on the weekend!

My grandmother used to make it regularly and I've been craving a regular supply ever since. I've been to some places that have it and advertise it (Red, Hot, and Blue around D.C. and Brother Jimmy's BBQ in NYC), but what they claim as Brunswick Stew is just vegetable soup with some meat. Stew should be thick and ground. Anyway, there were definitely some authentic varieties at the Festival.
