Sunday 1pm, looking for a parking place in downtown Berkeley for eating at Angeline's Louisiana Bistro. Right turn from University Ave onto Shattuck Ave. First couple of blocks, with the usual on street parking blocked off by construction. Would go down 3 blocks on Shattuck, looking in vain for on street diagonal parking, separated by traffic islands. On street parking is $3.50 an hour, 2 hours max, 9am to 6pm Monday-Saturday, credit cards accepted. Today is Sunday, so anyone with half a brain is going to take any vacant spot on the street. Make a U turn on Shattuck, and come around the other way. Blocks of filled parking. Turn into Kittredge Street, site of a movie theater, and there is Oxford Garage, rates $2 per hour, and flat $5 rate after 6pm. Go down the ramp to the gate, where I pull out the ticket, which raises the gate bar. In I go, past an empty spot right at the entrance -that's why it is empty, as you would have to maneuver the car around a concrete column, and between another car. Could do it with my 2017 Honda Fit, but not the larger 2017 Honda Civic. Now if there was no parking available, no ticket would appear, and you would be SOL, having somehow to back up your car, with a string of cars behind you, going up to street level! Underground parking garage, shielded from the elements, well lit, but with little cubby holes for parking left and right. We drive around in a circle, finding it about 95% full. Most of the open spots crowded by concrete columns, or crossovers over the parking line. Half way through we find an empty spot next to the elevator, and just do squeeze my compact 2017 Honda Civic into the spot. Small and tight parking spaces, in eco friendly Berkeley, not designed for SUVs nor full size pickups. Take the elevator up to Oxford street, and smell a whiff of urine. Homeless people behind every column right across the street from the University of California campus. Ticket reads 1:09 pm, but by the time we find a parking spot, and walk to Angeline's it's 1:30pm, with a 20 minute wait. 2:45pm finish lunch, and head back to the garage entrance on Kittredge. We try the door to the elevator, but they are locked, and have no choice but to ignore the sign saying "Do not Walk on Ramps", hugging the sides so we don't become road kill for cars coming down the ramps. We plug the ticket into the payment machine, and pay $4 with my credit card for two hours, receiving an exit ticket, which when inserted into the exit booth, raises the exit gate. Drive up the ramp to street level, where a small buzzer rings, notifying pedestrians that a car is coming up the ramp. If you come back after midnight, you are SOL, with the entire parking structure behind closed doors and your car locked up for the night! Parking lots in downtown San Jose open 24/7, but this is Berkeley, with a severe shortage of housing. This is apparently to discourage the homeless from using the garage as overnight sleeping quarters. It is what it is. read more

I have never felt the slightest need, and rarely had the opportunity, to speak to anyone while inside the Oxford Garage. May it ever be so. Fully automated. Well lit. Clean aside from the occasional blunt wrapper in the east elevator and no trace of that clinging creepiness so many parking garages can't seem to escape. One of the most exasperating things about going out is parking, or lack thereof. So once you lock in someplace, you keep coming back. Thats how I feel about the Oxford Street Garage. I first used them when I tried Angelines for dinner before going to a show in San Francisco and I was very please with the location and ease of use. I also like that it is very clean and there are security guards present. The bars in the area closes at 2am. That's when they get your wallet. You're forced to come back the next day and pick up your car with a $20+ parking fee to pay for. There's poor signage. The only sign we saw was not anywhere we were near, nor visible to notice. It sorta blended in with the color if building. I wouldn't be surprised if this was intentional. The thing about urban street parking is not just knowing where to look for parking, but also when to give up. It's 7 p.m. on the Friday before the Berkeley graduation and you have a reservation at Gather; face it, you're not going to find street parking: Save yourself 30 minutes of driving in circles and park at the Oxford Garage. The funny thing, though, is that there will always be some people who insist on finding street parking. I've been in their cars and it's never very fun. And it's also quite silly considering that the Oxford Garage is priced very reasonably. Between 5 p.m. and midnight you can park your car for a flat rate of $4 (though you need to come after 5 p.m. or you'll be charged the normal rates). Even the normal rates are very inexpensive: your first hour will only cost you $1.00. To give some perspective, many of the lots in Downtown SF charge $3.50-$4.50 for the first 15 minutes. If you'll be spending your evening at the California Theatre, Gather, Shattuck Cinemas, or Great China (whenever that place opens again) this is the place to park. Well, this was very convenient for 2 vans. Parking was cheap with $4 being total for each vehicle. Parking is limited and I was lucky to find 2 spots. I was happy with the service as it was a block away from places to eat and check out. This is a busy garage. Very well lit and feels safe. Do beware, I have not seen a service person and apparently after midnight, they close. So keep that in mind. read more

This facility is a racket, DO NOT PARK THERE! We parked our car at 8:30 pm, to catch a movie in the nearby theater on Kitteredge. When we came out of the theater at 12:20 am, the parking garage was locked. There is an announcement at the entrance that vehicles left after 12 pm can be claimed only next day, but this announcement is written in small letters over the dark background, and there is no light near it, so it is impossible to see in the dark. Further, there is no annuncement which tells you that the overnight parking counts as $17, and that if the next morning one comes to pick up the car later than 11 am, there charge is not hourly but another $17. By manipulating the visibility of information about the costs and time of parking, the garage collects a hefty $38 for overnight vehicles, and $17 for vehicles parked for more than 4 hours on the same day! In our situation, we picked up the car at about 2:30 pmnext day, so the charge should've been $17 +$5, which is the announced $5 cost for parking after 8 PM +overnight , but they charged us $38. What this garage does is illegal. The information is either not posted correctly, or misldeading, and then vehicles are hold hostage becaue the attendant cannot open the gates without a paid ticket. They get away with what they do because nobody will spend time on arguing for $20 overpay. However, when we were checking out, another person in the same situation just paid $38. So it is a system - avoid this garage. read more

I parked there on Friday July 3 and had a bad experience. You bring your parking ticket to the cashier and pay before you go to your car. When the ticket was scanned, the cash register read $6 (3 hrs.). The cashier insisted that the cash register "was all messed up" and I actually owed $10 (4 hrs.). I had handed him my only bill, a twenty, and he would only give me $10 back. Another man was in the booth but refused to get involved. I finally left without the $4 and can only assume he pocketed it so the register would balance out at the end of the day. In fact, there wasn't even money in the register, just a pile of bills sitting on the counter with which he made change. To add insult to injury, they don't even validate for the California Theatre three doors down the block. You have to park in the Allston Way garage to get your parking validated. read more

Whoa! Yesterday I turned into this garage entrance and descended to the ticket booth. No ticket would come out. The bar would not raise. Cars were waiting behind me. Finally a message flickered on the screen indicating that the garage was full. I had to get out of my car and walk up the ramp to tell all the cars waiting behind me that they had to reverse into oncoming traffic. This of course took forever because it's so very unsafe. There is a lot of traffic there, including bikes and pedestrians. This horror scene, which made me late to my event, could have been easily avoided with a street-level sign indicating the garage is full. Hello, this is not a new concept! Or at least allow the cars to come in to turn around and exit safely, if the sign is a bit too much to ask. Buyer beware!!! Signage is very misleading. Any parking over 4 hours is charged maximum daily rate. I arrived at 3:30pm and stayed 5 hours and 8 minutes. I thought that I would receive the hourly rate of $2/hr and or possibly be charged the hourly rate until the flat nightly rate of $5 kicked in. No, I was charged $17 for being over the 4 hour limit (which is not clearly stated on the sign at all). Sign says $2/hr up to four hours, then it states $5 flat evening rate if in after 5pm. Then it says daily maximum rate is $17. It does not say that the daily maximum kicks in one minute after 4 hours. What a scam!!!!! It seems very intentional to me since there are no warnings posted about that at all. read more

Was I disappointed! I chose this garage because of the $4 after-5 p.m. flat rate. I entered at 4:25 p.m. to go to dinner and a performance. I thought I'd be billed $1 for the time up until 5 and then $4 for the rest of the evening. The bill was $15 when I returned about 9:15 ; I was billed at the maximum $3 an hour rate.
