When comparing it with Oxfam's flashy locally designed clothes just up the road on North Street, or even with the colour co-ordinated rails of Kemp Town's neighbouring charity shops, you may well turn your nose up at this one. It's dark, dingy and disorganised. It can even smell pretty bad. However, if you're not too sneeze-prone and have a bit of time for a good rummage this place is definitely worth a visit. Although maybe don't even bother if you suffer from OCD - with its disarray of items, and seemingly no discerning judge of what makes the shelves, it is hard to resist the temptation to give The Friends Shop a thorough clean and tidy. But for the dedicatedly thrifty amongst us the prices are dirt cheap - all books are 50p for example and clothes much the same. Make a few trips, have a good rummage, and you're sure to find a bargain you'll be proud of. Well, eventually. One of Brighton's hot spots it may not be, but I feel strangely fond of The Friends Shop. It recalls those days of yesteryear before charity shops were popularized by magazines and celebrities, and thus anything vaguely nice always ransacked by an earlier bargain hunter. And with money raised supporting local hospital and healthcare facilities, at least there's one clear excuse for that 'bound to come in handy' item you end up buying.

Best of all is that they have already concocted different fancy dress outfits from the random jumble, genius.

I love, love charity shops, be it in London or in small villages in the countryside. The fact that…read moreit is really hard to find there things you really like is part of their charm. Rarely will you find as many cheap and quirky things as you will in this place. It is crammed with accessories, kitchenalia, glass, decanters, vintage clocks, frames... I came 20 minutes before closing time and still managed to find four items I fell in love with (for £17). Another amazing little find... Battle is a must not only for history geeks, but also for charity shops lovers :)

Soho Vintage, well, it kinda ticks my boxes. It's not huge but it has a decent enough selection. It also seems to stock some great men's wear. Need a leather jacket? You'll find one here boys. The shop is hidden off a back street and can be missed but if you're in the area it's worth popping in. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful if a little distracted by the phone. Encouraged by an easel sign on the busy Broadwick Street, I headed down the quiet Ingestre Place to the open door (and arms) of Soho Vintage. The tiny space was filled with a plethora of styles. From an antique Victorian skirt to the 80s off-the-shoulder sweatshirts that are all the rage right now, Soho Vintage represented all. The prices were a bit on the dear side but, considering its prime location in Soho, not surprisingly so. If you find something you absolutely must have, a little light haggling might work for you here, since the shop is so small - rue the fact that those vintage boots are £35 and you might get them for £30. Overall, this proved to be a solid vintage store with a wide variety of items (at a variety of price ranges) that belied the shop's size.

This is an incredible, fabulous place; one of the most amazing shops I have ever been in…read more It's full to bursting of vintage clothes. We went to get a 70s shirt for my husband for our wedding, and came out with three! I thought I would be horrendously expensive, and it isn't. The range of clothes is simply wonderful. It's everything you ever remember, and quite a bit you don't (dare I say that it even includes some stuff you'd wish to forget, lol!). Browsing here is uplifting. I just have to lose some weight so I can buy some of the best stuff. I could even have got my wedding dress here - would have been 'different' anyway. I love this place and can't wait to go there again.
