One of the best places for ice cream in the metro! I ordered a chocolate waffle bowl with s'mores ice cream and lil scoop of chocolate on top. I had never seen this before but it was so cute and tasted great! Quick and friendly service by the employees and reasonable prices. Cold AC inside and plenty of seating inside and out with a large parking lot. Hope to come back when I'm in the area. read more

Always great service and I love the rotating flavors! Make sure you check out their Facebook page frequently so you don't miss out. The shop is well organized as far as lining up for service so you don't get missed when it get a little crowded inside and the drive through is a great option. This is hands down the best ice cream and the best staff. We had our 6-year-old's birthday party there with 20 kids. They did a phenomenal job! They showed us how to make ice cream and gave the kids an ice cream bar. It truly was OVER THE TOP! We cannot say enough great things about this place. read more

They make custom and unique ice cream. There's not a ton of seating but they offer a small room to rent for parties. My favorites are the over the moon ice cream. It's like cotton candy with gummy bears. I also love the creamsicle float. They work with the community to have special nights for schools and groups. They are a active part of the community. They have great service and friendly staff. read more

I'm so glad the place we originally headed to for ice cream was closed for the season because this place was great! It was Saturday evening and we were the only customers for a bit. We had friendly service that was cheerful and helpful as we ordered and had a couple of questions. The fun "topper" scoop was a nice surprise and a great way to try something you might not want to have a whole scoop of and I'm not the type to ask for samples. The Southern Bourbon Praline Pecan was definitely my favorite. The Amaretto Cherry was good, but a bit tart for me. I tried a topper of Over the Moon, which wasn't my favorite. Wonder gem of a place to get ice cream!! Mom and pop style homemade ice cream with wonderful ice cream cakes, this is the place to come. Immediately north of Great Escape bowling center in Pleasant Hill. The best about this place is the 'Topper'. I have nothing but great things to say about this ice cream shop except for one thing... and that thing is that it's too far from where we live!! This ice cream shop is right off of the intersection next to a place called The Social (they have laser tag there) and it's a cute little shop. They even have an extra room in case you need more tables and chairs. The Service: 5/5 Excellent. They were very helpful and efficient. There were 12 of us and six of that being kids but they were fast and friendly. The Flavors: 5/5 You can tell the ice cream is homemade and very yummy! One of the flavors I tried were meh, but one out of the other five I tried is not bad at all! I really liked the Twixted Sister and Muddy Sneakers. Their Mint Chocolate Chip was good, nothing different though. It's cute that with every order you get a mini scoop of your choice "over the top" of your cone. Over the Top has got to be the best ice cream in Des Moines. They have a drive thru (you honk when you get to the window to order - it's kind of hilarious), but I would recommend going inside. I don't know anything that is MORE Iowa-in-the-summer than standing in front of an ice cream counter, drooling over tons of flavors. They have cake and waffle cones and bowls, there are always tons of fun, seasonal flavors (hello, sweet corn), and the service is impeccable. The idea behind the name is that your ice cream gets a little "hat" aka a tiny scoop of another flavor that you get to choose. The ice cream is delicious, and the store is cute. They also have a nice sized party room; I bet you could get at least 20 people in there. I think this would be a really cute place to host a birthday party. In conclusion, highly recommend. If you're reading this during the fall, go get yourself some apple strudel or some salted caramel in a waffle cup and you'll be in a lovely sugar coma the rest of the day. read more

I love ice cream,who doesn't. But getting great ice cream is the problem maybe I'm old fashioned because to me Home made is the best. This place nails it. Now I'm going to recommend their shakes. Pick your flavor, personally I'm going with chocolate and boy do they have a wonderful chocolate shake. Even the Jack and Jill my wife had was wonderful. I've also had marshmallow and vanilla shake from them. Marshmallow was good not over sweet like most I've had and no strong mallow taste or after taste. Vanilla tasted like real Vanilla,creamy and delicious. Expect a line and a wait, they are packed on weekends especially in the evening. read more

Best ice cream in Des Moines. Trust me. I can't think of any place better. Everything is handcrafted and made in small batches. They also sell great chocolates. Best ice cream ever is Sebastian Joes in Minneapolis, this one comes in a close second potentially edging out Izzy's also based in MInneapolis. Believe me this is good, we drive far for good ice cream and have gone to Minneapolis for the sole purpose of good ice cream. With Over the top here in Iowa...those trips will become a lot less frequent. read more

During the day air they even carry a sweet corn ice cream! They let you try samples too! They have a private room you can rent that holds about 30. The candy is delicious also. I am Iowa, born and raised. I grew up eating Only AE products and I am very sorry for writing…read morethis. First of all, we live in Colfax, just east of DM. We do most of our grocery shopping in 3 places, Fareway (we want to support local) in Colfax, Fareway and Walmart in Newton and occasionally Fareway in Altoona. All of the 2%, 1%, cottage cheese and half/half go bad before the "use before date ", by as much as a week prior! We make sure to properly store in the car and in our frig. What is happening?? I knew that the old fashioned cottage cheese had changed quite awhile ago (bc of no more hand packing?) but these milk issues are becoming intolerable. We are in our 70's and on a fixed income. This is a problem that I NEVER would have expected from AE Dairy. Just wanted you to know the situation from one of your 60+ years customer. Hoping for better results ahead.
